What film did you watch last night?

Christmas Karma.
Was fine, but not epic. Didn't realise it was a musical.

Porno on Prime.

Not a porno but a comedy horror set in a cinema where the workers watch a film that summons a Succubus. The Succubus has nice qualities.

There's one scene that I could have done with never having seen but it's too late for that. If you've seen it you know the scene I mean, especially if you're male.

Two belters today… both with Robin Williams!

Good Will Hunting (on Netflix)

A genius living a troubled life is made to attend therapy as a condition for his parole.

Excellent. It never gets particularly deep into the therapy itself but it’s much more about the relationships that titular Will has with his friends, new romance and therapist… and how he gridlocks himself by ‘thrashing out’.

A very satisfying journey and conclusion.

Minor gripes for me are that the romantic interest is just so… bland? What a laugh she has! Plus, the therapist’s focus on bottomless, perfect love with another seems a little outdated, set against modern mantras of finding self-love. Still, those are nitpicks, outweighed by some very powerful moments… especially Ben Affleck’s speech about knocking on a door.

Dead Poets Society (on Netflix)

A squad of boarding school kids find inspiration from their teacher, leading to growth and challenges.

Excellent. I’m not sure how I’ve not seen this one until now…!

Most of the kids are charming, or at least memorable, and seeing their antics and gaining courage is a joy. As the plot proceeds it approaches being a little too ‘idealist / bohemian romantic’ but just as it does, matters become more dramatic… so overall a great balance.

My ratings should be read as an ‘extent of my recommendation’… rather than a statement of perfection :)

Star Wars (1977)

I finally got around to watching the 4K77 version that group of fans of the original theatrical release created. Although I'm old enough to have seen it on its original release, I never did. I've probably seen it on VHS before Lucas tampered with it.

Having said that I'm not particularly precious about the special editions over the originals, other than the fact the added CGI looks crap, even for 1997 and definitely looks out of place in a film shot in the 1970's.

From what I've read other fan restoration versions of the film exist, so I'm might give those a watch too, at some point. I definitely prefer the film without the added CGI, but the 4k Blu-ray version of the the composite shots and special effects are far superior. Since I watch on a TV, HDR really lifts the image over the SDR of 4K77.

Do I dare to rate the film as well?

Well some of the acting is poor, the dialogue is laughably bad at times and most of the story elements are taken from pre existing works. Having said that it just works and you just can't help but enjoy it, no matter how many times you've seen it.

Die my love - Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Patterson star as a couple in this film about a loved up couple who move to the countryside and have a baby boy not long after but J-Law develops post-natal depression and things go from bad to worse. J-Law is really good. I enjoyed it. 7.5/10

Mission Impossible:Final Reckoning - 7/10

Overly long with some pacing issues (especially the first hour). Great set pieces as long as you turn your brain off completely. Was a decent enough love letter to the franchise and looks and sounds great. One of the helicopter scenes made my subwoofer lose it's marbles and rattle the house big time!

doing my Bond run through again...Spectre. Not sure I can face NTTD but the car bit at the beginning is pretty good...
Maybe I'll just watch that then turn it off. :p

Stand by Me (on ‘4 On Demand’)

Four ‘everyman’ boys, each fighting their own battles, set off on a walk to find a dead body supposedly located by the side of some railroad tracks.

Short. Yup, that’s the word that first comes to mind, coming in at less than 90 minutes. Whether that’s for the better or worse, I’m not sure. The themes shine through despite (or possibly because of?) the concise edit, but the conclusion of the narrative and ‘dramatic climax’ verges on feeling truncated.

Two of the boys aren’t particularly likeable but the camaraderie makes it work well.

Very watchable, but not quite hitting the peaks of ‘poignant’ set by other recent viewings.
