MSI MAG Tomahawk X870/X870E Owners Thread

Just started seeing one of my m.2 drives disappear it's a 1tb Samsung 990 pro it's in the m.2.1 slot, a full power down was the only way of bringing it back.

This is on the MSI X870E Tomahawk.

Could it not be related to this Windows issue? Is the NVME firmware the latest?

Don't think it will be check the 2nd post in that same topic

Ps thanks for mentioning the firmware though not checked it in ages and it was out of date so just updated it.

Just thought I'd add my 10 penneth worth on the 870E in case it helps anyone else.

1. This MB has a myriad of useful little tricks, not all of them in the instructions but most are... Yes, I "eventually" read the manual
2. The extra PCI-E socket really does seem to make a substantial difference to the board function. Without anything plugged in but with 2 SATA spin drivers + 3 M.2 NVRAM drives it seemed to struggle without the extra power.

Symptoms for the above were erratic mouse movement, incredibly slow refresh rate on the BIOS setup screen (like 4 frames per minute!) and weird glitches in Windows 10 (didn't have Win11 installed at that point).

3. Win 10 doesn't support this boards WIFI7... (Yes, I know... wise after the event)
4. Boot from mem sticks won't work with some USB settings (can't remember which ones I had that caused problems).

All in all it has been an experience but it's working now with the current BIOS and now that I've plugged that extra PCI-E power lead in.

Looking at these two motherboards would it be possible to use this memory kit in either of them.....

the kit comes with various XMP profiles, but I do not know if this particular board will have a setting to use those..? I don't expect them to be QVL tested, but at least possible to use, albeit not at their rated speed..?

Thanks

EDIT, well I am surprised as they do seem to be on the QVL list....

This mb is weird. If I plug a usb storage drive in the front panel usb it slows and freezes my mouse down which is paired to a dongle also in the front. However there is no issue when I have two dongles plugged in.

I think I also found a weird thing where the USB front panel ports don't work properly. For me, I can't always get power out of the USB A ports like I can't use a yubikey for example but it works fine on the other port of JUSB4. Usb flash drives and other accessories that don't need power work fine from both ports as well.

JUSB3works fine on both ports. 1 pin is slightly out of shape on JUSB3 but this works fine on both front panel ports.

I even bought a replacement io kit from Lian Li and the new cable had the same issue in the same port.

Have you tried connecting the bottom pcie power connector?

I have it on JUSB1 I think, I can even fast charge my phone through the front USB-C and it won't effect the mouse, just stops my mouse when I plugged in my win11 usb boot drive for example. I did install the PCI connecter today even though I didn't think it was needed, this was to help with another fault but turned out to be unrelated.

I could try another header I guess but it's more of an annoyance as to 'why' rather than me really needing it, especially as I'm about to get a small hub for all my dongles.

FWIW I had a bent pin on one header.
I raised a case with MSI and it was replaced under warranty. (through the retailer)
For bonus points it meant I had a 2nd serial# to register and get extra steam codes. :)

Mines is sorted, I just moved it to the next socket and it's fine. Not sure why 1 doesn't work properly though. Certainly not enough of an issue that I'm going to send it back.

How is the Gpu compatibility if you want to add something to the X1 slot? Like a sound card, would a 2.5-3 slot height gpu be able to breathe?

If your MSI X870E motherboard with Realtek RTL8126 5Gbps LAN is causing random internet disconnections when your PC sleeps (especially with 2.5Gbps switches), change this setting:

Device Manager → Network Adapters → Realtek RTL8126 → Properties → Advanced Tab → "WOL & Shutdown Link Speed" → Change from "10Mbps First" to "Not Speed Down"

This keeps your network link at full speed during sleep instead of dropping to 10Mbps, which prevents problematic speed transitions.

Thank you.

I noticed that there was something up months ago (raised a case with MSI) where occasionally the link would not come back at all (maybe my switch didnt support 10Mb?)
Their solution was to disable something in the BIOS which in effect forced components like the NIC to power off (ERP??)
I havent noticed the same issue since.

I have a thread on MSI's forum titled "Solution for internet and LAN disconnects in PC sleep state on X870/X870E motherboards with RTL8126 connected to multigig switch" with the full details. I think turning ErP off would increase power consumption and probably keep the NIC active at the full negotiated speed however, I just checked and I have erp ready disabled already.

I was also noticing that the 10Mb link remained active in a power off state, even with WoL disabled in BIOS.
Lol so of course on the day I post this I had the disconnect happen again. Honestly so frustrating.

Edit: actually lol this is my fault. I used my ReviOS today to browse the ea app and tried to get a refund for need for speed unbound which I had purchased on the wrong account. Anyway this windows 11 install didn't have the not speed down value set, instead it had 10mbps. I It's actually the first time I've used this OS in a few days so it's more proof the 10mbps state doesn't work well at least on multi gig switches.
