Can anyone recommend a good beginners guide, remind me what's in the game and what I can do?

Not played for about 2 years. Got an Asp Explorer, 224m CR and no a damn idea of what I'm doing.

HI Peeps, can someone explain the new CG to me? Do i have to align to a Power and undertake PowerPaly activity? I've never done that so I'm at a loss as how to start.

edit: in other news I started a colony a few weeks ago and this week I may just about complete 2 orbital and 3 surface installations. Boring but feel rewarding too.

With this new feature thing going on around the permit locked system at the moment, from what I can gather they seem to be suggesting it might be a good idea to be in a powerplay faction round about now, and all the powerplay factions are moving megaships to be station around this locked system. So my guess is that some vital resource, like for example spice, is on the one planet in the system. And the powerplay factions all have to fight to be in control of the spice planet, with the controlling faction getting some boost or other. Having any giant worms coded in to the game is probably a stretch though.
Well well welly well. Apparently the multicannons on offer in this CG are quite OP, but they are fixed so my immediate reaction is do I really want to bother with signing up to a power and go through what is required for 75%, with the non-zero level of bother that being in a power has if you are doing general trading in other powers space etc, when I don't really do fixed weapons? I predict in the end I will cave and do it anyway, like in the CG just gone, once the levels required for 75% become clearer.

Just be aware that normally when you sign onto a Power you have to complete 5 of the weekly (ie training) missions before your merit earnings show ( excess is hidden from you but still accrues, its not wasted) Not sure if this is the case in this CG

Plenty of guides out there but no idea if any of them are any good, what do you want to do is a better question? The wiki is probably a good place to get an idea of what you can do: https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Elite_Dangerous

Started doing the tutorials and learning again, but my game looks like ****.
I don't know how best to describe it other then jagged and flickery.

The game set my graphics to high by default.

What settings should I be changing for better graphics?

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
32GB 3600Mhz

Oh that' the thingy, there's a setting you can turn off and it vastly improves, I need to check in the menu. FSR, if FSR is enabled get rid.

Thanks, there was no FSR off option, just normal, which says uses the ingame settings.

Game does look less jaggy now.
That's the one, also if you have the GPU power for it set super sampling to something higher than 1.0, it'll reduce aliasing further.

Been meaning to get back into this for a while and finally took the leap on Sunday.

First started playing in 2016, at one stage had a nice HOTAS setup but as my PC started to age I switched to Xbox and started again. After 3 years of playing on console they dropped support and I just stopped playing (mainly due to not having a PC capable). Over the past year I have dipped my toe in from time to time but couldn't remember how to fly and what key did what and paranoid about accidently blowing up my ship I just left it floating in space.

So Sunday fired up the training missions, found keyboard/mouse a bit fiddly so used xbox controller and wasn't long before it all came back to me. But now I had a decision to make, how to proceed.

My Anaconda was floating between the bubble and Sag A*, once I figured out how to plot a course back it came to 457 jumps. Now with 6.2 billion in the bank rebuy isn't an issue but where would I end up if I chose the suicide option. On my galaxy map I have waypoints indicating a path from Colonia to Sag A* and given my location between Sag A* and the bubble you would have thought this was the journey home and I really didn't want to end up back at Colonia.

Could just start again, but 6.2 billion in the bank and who knows how much exploration data I have was enough to pursued me not to do that. Could beg for a lift from a carrier but I don't have a docking computer and despite a few practice training missions in a sidewinder I really don't want to attempt to dock with an audience and end up exploding in the mail slot!

So stuck a playlist on Spotify, and with my 35ly max jump anaconda started to make the journey home. As a bonus found a couple of earth likes and now find myself only 249 jumps away. Wish the route planner would pick more scoopable stars, in a stretch of brown-dwarf hell and I’ve had to keep a close eye on fuel and divert a few times to avoid running dry.

So looking forward to cashing in all the exploration data "if" I manage to dock successfully, other issue I noticed is I have no weapons and basic shield modules so might be a bit tense the closer I get to civilization!

Definitely the correct choice to continue!

Carriers don't have mailslots, you land directly on the deck so no need to be concerned with getting stuck.

Filter your galaxy map to show only scoopable stars (KGBFOAM) and then plot your route, it'll only use those stars, at the same time make sure you have the correct settings for jump range selected to ensure you're not doing a load of unnecessarily short jumps.

Remember to play in solo of private group at least until you have successfully sold your exploration data, would hate to see you lose it to some ganker.

I play in open and you will almost never meet another Cmdr in space until you arrive at one of the hubs like Jamesons or a community goal location (like the Flower Power Bubble thats going on at the moment - avoid like the plague if you are not involved.)

OF course doing as Dano suggests and playing in solo or a private group will make it so much safer

if you are worried about losing data you could also look for a carrier which has a Universal cartographics on it (should be filterable in inara) and sell your data before you get back.
you will lose a percetage of the money, but if you are mostly interested in getting your name on some interesting systems then this may not be an issue for you.

I think you are doing the right thing going directly back to the bubble if you are scanning along the way anyway, but for info, if you did suicide and end up back in Colonia, there are now regular fleet carrier bus trips between the Bubble and Colonia and you could have hopped on one. There is a Discord which advertises fleet carrier trips all over the galaxy, including quite regular Colonia-Bubble runs. But by the sounds of it you will have millions in scan data, so definitely coming back to sell is a good idea, even if it takes a while.
