Best Retro Handheld

I suppose you're at risk of entering a sunken cost fallacy. Yeah, it's a tough one.
I'm just glad it was with a pretty cheap device and I have a bunch of replacements, I will probably open it up and have a look, may be something that can be fixed with a bit of jiggling.:)

My main learning is not to use AliExpress for anything of any value, if I'd dropped 200 to 300 quid on a higher end device if be very annoyed, I kinda assumed it would be like Amazon, which is my mistake.

I suppose this is the crux of cheap Chinese electronics - they're cheap because they don't offer 2 year warranties etc. Still sucks about your screen but yeah, maybe the cable has gone a bit askew or something.

Sadly it isn't limited to buying direct from China. I had to contact my credit card company after buying from Uk Whatgeek when my delivery went missing.

I think we generally know what we are getting into with these cheap devices, they aren't built to last, or pass safety inspections... :D

I was just surprised AE didn't have any sort of post 90 day warranty.

I did actually buy an SP in October for the fact it was a small clamshell and very portable, although the clicky buttons are very annoying.

But since I'm within my 90 days on AE I'm gonna send this back, haven't used it much of late, was cheap impulse buy and offsets some of the loss for the RG40XXV.

Three smart pro S arrived this afternoon, one green, one red and one yellow :)
Thought I might have boobed ordering without SD cards when I found that there's no third party os available as yet. Downloaded the release os from Trimui and tried a couple of roms, all played fine. They've now been put away for the 25th.

So, I fell into the rabbit hole of handhelds. My original idea was to buy a Gameboy advance sp and smash through the Pokémon titles as I have never played them. Upon looking around and seeing the prices of handhelds and prices of games I soon thought a retro handheld would be loads better and opens the door to more platforms/games. My interest is peaked by the flip versions of them, largely by the Ayn Thor someone had already linked here

Anyone have any experience with it or experience with Ayn at all?

Not quite the same but I've gone from a Steam Deck to an ROG Xbox Ally X and I use it so much more than I ever did my Steam Deck. Emulation performance is amazing but being able to play native PC games on it is unbelievable. Currently playing through Silent Hill 2 remastered at 1080p30fps and apart from a few hitches every so often its spot on.
Have you not been tempted to stick SteamOS on it if that’s possible with the Ally X?
I like the idea of Windows compatibility in theory but in practice it’ll probably be way worse that SteamOS for things like sleep mid game and constant updates and installing drivers / other software to get everything running.

Modretro has announced an Anduril branded Chromatic, which they themselves state

"The body of Chromatic is made from the same magnesium aluminum alloy as Anduril’s attack drones"

I mean seriously?

I've got no love for Palmer but as long as the companies were separate then fair enough, but this is incredibly tasteless.

I did call out a few people previously due to the hypocritical nature of people moaning about Modretro constantly but we're happy to support a number of other firms who are not far removed from defence contracts either.

But this is another level and feels grotesque.

I have the Thor. I posted some impressions earlier in the thread. It's my first 'proper' retro handheld (i've got a Miyoo Mini and a BatleXP G350, but both of them were are only about £40 each) and it's a lovely bit of kit. The OLED screens are beautiful, build quality seems very good and it's a very capable little machine. My only gripe is the ergonomics but that can be alleviated somewhat with a grip

I have a Thor Enroute (Should be here in a few days), this will be my 3rd AYN device, I've hav an original Odin Pro, I still have may Odin 2 Pro, and the Thor Pro.

AYN seem a good company, there devices are usually class leading (with a matching price), support for this from AYN is great, but support from the community is exceptional!. Highly recommended.

So I listened to the voice of reason  and decided an AYN Thor probably wouldn't be the smartest choice for my first retro handheld, even though it does look cool as hell. Had my heart set on a clamshell design and was hunting the web for a few days looking at my options and managed to snag myself a Retroid pocket flip 2/SanDisk extreme pro 1TB (bit overkill for wat I need) for £140 all in brand new. If I take to it well I'll look into a AYN in the future just in case it turns out to be one of them purchases where it looks a good idea and then not used.

Seems like a really good price! Was it secondhand?

No, new. Always using trusty coupert

I think you’ve done very well then!

I keep looking at these things and really want something like the Thor or the new Anbernic RG477V but I struggle to find time for the Switch 2 as it is. Would be nice to have something compact for packed tube rides though.

Yeah was a similar reason for me picking one up and I had never played the Pokémon games so wanted to give it a try with options for other consoles/handhelds.

Has this arrived yet?

Interested to know as ive seen places selling just the 1tb card for around £140 but its just a ‘fully loaded’ card for a flip 2 and no console.

If it is the flip 2 device and a genuine sandisk extreme 1tb card, then you’ve got a bargain!

Ive got a range of devices. Recently ive modded my steamdeck with a full gameboy shell and buttons.

The power of the unit coupled with emulationstation for me offers great value to what you can emulate. Up to ps3 is achievable.

Have a Anbernic RG556 which is decent too.

Hope I'm wrong but this sounds to good to be true, has to be a refurb, if it exists at all.

If legit I'd love to know where from as would definitely pick up for that price and take a chance on the hinge.
