What film did you watch last night?

This week decided to rewatch the MIB films (plus I hadn't seen the latest)

MIB - 8.5/10 - Very funny, great cast, plot could be better but doesn't hurt it too much
MIB 2 - 5/10 - Still funny but more CGI that looks ropy and boring bad guys
MIB 3 - 6.5/10 - Better bad guys and a surprisingly good plot
MIB International - 3/10 - Great cast but my god who wrote this. Comes off like a bad Mission Impossible spoof with aliens.

I watched The Long Walk (based on a Stephen King short story) last night. I thought it was really good.

Though it's been many years, I think it was pretty faithful to the original, though the ending was changed. Have to say, I preferred the book ending I remember.

The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) - 6/10

A fun family sci-fi adventure with plenty of action, puppets and cute humor.

The simple story doesn’t have the usual stakes of a Star Wars movie and significantly drags in the second half, but is entertaining and different with its
wrestling slugs and a geriatric pilot squadron
. Grogu has plenty of moments of comedic gold but the rest feels relatively tame with few deaths and little tension.

Normal.

Started off really great. First half or so had me pretty hooked. Once things 'kicked off' it went downhill pretty quickly. 5/10, maybe a touch lower. Silly action, rather than real/gritty. Shame.

The mayor scene made me chuckle though.

Project Hail Mary 8/10

Went in blind with the exception of spoilers from scrolling through social media relating to time dilation but thankfully that's not how it played out so was pleasantly surprised at the direction it took

Really great feels, had me welling up at times. I don't think I've warmed to a non-human character like this since Wall-E.
It loses a couple of points for some plotholes and illogical science (blame Interstellar for the high expectations on that one), and the lack of any kind of reaction from earth when he saved the world and introduced them to aliens

Mandy - 3/10

This sounded like my sort of thing but found it boring as hell. Probably the slowest paced film I've ever seen in my life. Takes about an hour for anything remotely interesting to happen.

Obsession.

~Very entertaining, not scary for me though, I though it was more comedy horror. Inde Navarrette stole the show, what a great perfromce, love to see her in more stuff.

8/10

The Mandalorian and Grogu (at the cinema)

The titular bounty hunters have a new target; can they help defeat the remnants of the Empire?

Okay; some spectacle but redundant plot-wise, with questionable pacing in the final 3rd.

The new characters were pleasingly just that, a fresh spin on the tried and tested. There’s some ‘deep cut’ Episode 4 nostalgia bait thrown in for those with keen eyes and ears, which I was pretty passive about but I don’t like constant recalls to ‘remember the thing?’, so less of that please, thanks.

Regrettably, the only plus of having a ‘bumper long standalone episode’ of the TV show is that there is more time taken to let scenes breathe, notably with atmospheric shots of Blade Runner-esque cityscapes. This was bolstered by an impressive soundtrack, which often goes for ‘electronic moodiness’ and ‘pounding ominous synths’ that contrasts well with the done to death orchestral scores. Speaking of death, this is a surprisingly violent film. People get killed left right and centre… no mercy from the Mando!

The big downfall is that there is pretty much zero emotional progression. The heavy lifting on that front is a meandering section starring Grogu that tested my patience. His gimmick is simply too basic to carry that much screen time. The end result is ok, but it’s just more ‘going through the motions’ for Star Wars, and this franchise has been fatiguing for some time.

5.5/10

Oblivion Tom Cruise sci-fi nod to Starwars especially the drones and flight scenes. The story concept was the the best part for us. 7/10

Mickey 17 (2025)

A sci-fi comedy about an "expendable" employee, Mickey 17, who is sent to explore an ice planet.

Watched this last night. It started off well, but soon after, it just went all over the place really.

5/10

28 Years Later

Disappointed. Story weak, characters basically 2 dimensional. Plot confused with no real direction. At best could be described as a exercise in leaving it open for the "next film".

3/10

They Will Kill You.

Raimi / Tarantino inspired splatter-fest, with a very similar plot to Ready Or Not.

Great camera work in places, and lots of fun. 6.5/10
