Split Air con

Had our split system in for a week now. It's utterly fantastic and worth every penny. It's night and day compared to the old portable system. The speed is gets the room down to temperature is outrageous and it's definitely our favourite big purchase so far this year.

I think I'm going to get our portable system serviced and then put away in the loft in case of an emergency as we will never use it again on the frontline as it's just so outclassed.
 
From what people are saying, the prices aren't changing come winter. People don't suddenly forget that they want AC for next summer.
 
Probably to some extent now, as demand for AC has exploded due to the record breaking heatwaves we've been having in recent years.

I'd still consider winter the best time to buy though. Have a look at quotes then.

The FGas cert isn’t even that difficult to get, it’s 5 days IIRC. That doesn’t mean you have the skills to actually install one.

The full qualification assumes you also want to work on commercial refrigeration, there isn’t actually a domestic installation qualification.

Got my City & Guilds F-Gas certificate last year, as at the time I was working in the oil & gas industry on a floating storage unit (think a of an oil tanker without a main engine), and as part of the engine room equipment I looked after as a marine tech, there was an A/C system for the accommodation and a refrigeration plant for the cold stores for the galley. While actual break in maintenance was carried out by contractors, I needed the F-Gas cert in order to be able to recover the gas from either of those systems in order to isolate them before work could begin, then vacuuming the system down and recharging it once they were done. The only time I ever did brazing was during that course, and it was an utter dog’s breakfast. While on paper, I’m qualified to do the work, I wouldn’t have the confidence to do it.
 
I've pretty much moved into my garden office now due to having an air con unit fitted last month. It's turned into a case of "I'm a little bit hot, let me go and sit in the office with the air con on" not sure if this is a good thing! I still cant get my head around how cheap my system is to run.

On the warmer nights I have been sleeping out here on a camping mat (vango shangri-la 15 grande) Think I need to man up a bit :cry:

They’ve never costed that much to run, it’s just another myth about the things which are ‘not normal’ to own in the U.K.

I’m sure you could get a bad install and who just blasts it as full belt to use a lot of electricity but that’s the same with everything.

There is also absolutely zero requirement to man up.

Think about it, on the continent, everyone has AC because these temperatures are too hot for them also.

Looking for a 3 bedroom 1st floor set-up initially and then 2 main rooms on grd floor in the future. Two bedrooms are sized at 10m2 and one at 16m2. Two small rooms have external facing wall and the larger room is at front of house with all three having good strong sunlight throughout the day.

I am looking for options in terms of
  • 3 internal units (model) and external (should that allow for 2 more units in future or better to have another separate external)
  • should I buy units separate to then ask for a trusted installer

Any recommendations please. I am in London

Pennies to run, I think about £50 for the whole house last year.

British society is bizarre, we’ll spend a fortune on heating systems, but would rather moan about the hot weather and how we have no money, yet they’ll be redecorating for the 10th time, a car on pcp they can’t afford etc etc. Even when my wife suggested it years ago and we got it installed, it still felt like something we shouldn’t be doing. It’s of course been bliss ever since.

But they do every single year. It’s why ac units and installers are so available in the winter, yet there’s a sudden panic for them in the summer. It’s like we forget about the many previous summers that have been 30-40C. ‘Why would I install them when it’s freezing outside and the I’d only use it for a week in the summer’.

An installer is unlikely to install anything they have not supplied themselves. There are also warranty implications of this, if the hardware stops working, it’s your problem not theirs as they didn’t supply it.

Most installers only offer 1-2 brands of 10+ on the market so it comes down to what they offer, not what we can recommend. Likewise, they are mostly a much of a muchness anyway.

If you want aircon the first step is to get some quotes and go from there. You are best off asking for recommendations for installers but London is pretty big so you might need to be more specific in east/west/north/south.
