SSD prices climbing fast!

It sure looks like it!! I picked a bad time to come back from a laptop :)
Aye that's what I was doing, Laptop HDD died, lost 15 years of documents and no recvoery software would play ball :(
The nly part of the driver knackered is seemingly my userprofile as well **** ***** s****

Nabbed a 9800X3d, 32Gb RAM, 1TB SSD, 5080 in November and whacked an extra 4TB into it thinking it would do me until after Xmas.
Looking at prices the 5TB will have to do me a tad longer than that haha, looking at the prices of the bits as well I dont think I coudl remotely build this for how much it cost me now lol

Let it be a lesson to always keep backups, it might be worth trying professional recovery if you lost anything important.

Part of me thinks it's all part of the plan, just as people are starting to store their own data and not use cloud services then storage prices shoot up. Adding another 3x 8TB HDDs to my NAS suddenly doesn't seem a great idea.

Are prices ever gonna drop is this the new norm?
Eventually relative to average salary yes of course they will but you might have a bit of a wait until demand drops, production increases or they find a cheaper way to make higher density storage.

Isnt there supposed to be more production starting in Texas foundry?
Even if true there has to be more supply than demand before prices start to drop...

A quick duckduck go search suggests its Samsung and they are making 2nm which doesn't go into full production until November and their main customer for it is Tesla...

Edit: a quick re read of the article I found and they are operating at around 30%, are planning to break ground on a second factory later in the year and Musk is hoping they start taping out his A16 AI chips in December

Usually I run a Samsung pro nvme ssd as my OS drive a Sabrent Rocket for Games, and a Samsung 870 EVO sata ssd for other non os data, but with prices the way they are Samsung seems off the table.
Kioxia seems reliable but they've so many models and i imagine some are DRAM less so honestly don't know which brands are worth going for, plus Crucial is out of the mix these days too.

Msi Spatium M480 pro were priced well on other sites for a while, 1gb dram and maxing out Gen 4 PCIe technology read speeds at 7400mb/s.
The pro model has a Phison E18 controller, micron 176 layer TLC Nand and SK Hynix DDR4 SDRAM.
My systems have either MSI drives (work and home laptops as they run cooler than the Acer model) or Acer Predator GM7000 in gaming pc.
They are similar specs to the Samsung/Crucial models but better value imo.

Samsung are currently offering cashback on specific 9100 Pro (Gen5) and 990 Pro (Gen4) NVME model purchased until midnight Oct 6th (from listed vendors):

9100 PRO 1TB MZ-VAP1T0BW £75
9100 PRO 4TB MZ-VAP4T0BW £150
990 PRO 4TB MZ-V9P4T0BW £150
870 EVO 2TB MZ-77E2T0B/EU £100

That actually makes the 9100 Pro 1TB cheaper than pretty much every Gen 4 1TB right now.

I don't trust these cashback stuff. They should just price it cheaper to begin with
If the cashback claim gets validated then you'll definitely get it, if it gets rejected then you can return it. They do it because it helps to protect their brand value compared to pricing it cheaper to begin with.

990pro 4tb is good value too

Manufacturer cashback is normally very straightforward as long as you double check the model number, vendor list and purchase date range. I've done a phone and fridge freezer via Samsung no issues at all. Third party stuff like TopCashBack can be less reliable - although i have done about £3k worth over 7yrs and only had one issue of cashback not tracking properly and they still paid me.

after the cashback it's still around £350-ish
Current storage price increases aside, the cheapest 4TB on OCUK is £449. You are getting one of the top Gen4 drives for £340. Admittedly the starting price range of between and £800 is very bizarre.
