Bioware (Baldur's Gate, Kotor, Neverwinter Nights, DA:O, Mass Effect, some other terrible games) - Purchased by EA in 2007; shut down 2026

Respawn (Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends) - Purchased 2017; layoffs and cancellations, SOON?

It's actually a good game with a decent story. People just got hung up on the trans character in their fantasy game.

I mean who doesn't like playing a mediocre fantasy RPG where you get to watch a lecture about pronouns for no good reason?

Much like many once loved institutions Bioware ended up as little more than perverse skin suit worn by people that couldn't even barely disguise their disgust for the companies heritage and the bulk of their customer base.

Good riddance I say.

Have a look at the thread to refresh your memory on just how 'childish' it got. It's a 6 or 7 out of 10 game unless you're in the 'OMG WOKE WOKE TRANS BLAH BLAH' crowd of shriekers. Possibly one of the most embarrassing threads in the PC Games forum actually :D

You're forgetting the scum games journos claiming it was a 10/10 game.

Both the game developer and the scum media deservered every bit of the opprobrium they were on the receiving end of over that game.

That's how games journalism in mainstream outlets is now unfortunately.

Still shockingly annoying and clearly biased, IGN actually admitted to the fact the game didn't deserve the score they gave it.

"A return to form!"

Most of us know that these companies are getting paid for positives at least to some extent, but my god that was one of the most extreme examples in modern times.

What’s 10/10 Actually Mean?
There is a common belief that 10/10 means perfect; I do not ascribe to this belief. I do not accept that perfection exists, certainly not in this industry.

That's from the linked review.

Joshua Duckworth is a blithering moron or compromised, he's justifying and doubling down on his score while appealing to the fact others within the industry applied similar scores. If 10/10 isn't perfect to you the entire basis of a 0-10 scoring system is utterly useless, go get a job at Starbucks and stop clowning on people who can potentially only afford (in time or money) a handful of AAA games a year, if that.

I have heard it for decades in movie reviewing and then game reviewing, yet I don't think there's ever been any evidence that major mainstream reviewers are getting paid by movie or game publishers.

The closest it gets is a "sponsored by" article or video.

This is reminding me I still need to play ME. I have 1 and 2 sitting in my steam library since 2011. I think I only played a few hours of the first one before dropping off for some reason I can't remember. Worth playing the originals now or get the legendary edition?

Legendary edition for sure. It regularly goes on sale for like, a fiver.

Bioware made some great games in the past but I am not going to go all fanboy on them.

People get emotionally invested in 'studio's' but in reality they are just the name of the business. Bioware is not an institution which you should revere, its just another faceless company that has made a few good products over the years, they were never your 'bro's'.

The game is made by the people, not the studio. The studio is no different to any other business people come and go over the years. This is particularly prevalent in the in creative industries because people are usually only hired to work on that specific project. Creative industries take that even further these days and often spin up a new 'studio' to only work on a specific project and that's it.

Support the underlying talent who made the games (works of art a lot of them), don't fanboy the corporation who made the profits.

They are not directly paid, its all indirect and it happens with non mainstream too

There are sponsors yes

There is also industry events, free flights, accommodation and activities

And the big one for reviewers of all types is Early Access to Games - this is the big one that keeps them on the hook. If you're a reviewer and the new Call Of Duty is coming up, and you can either get the game for free from Microsoft one week before it releases so you can do your reviews, or you can buy a retail copy of the game after it launches, do your review and enjoy your review getting 90% fewer views. Which will you do? Thats right, thats why almost all game reviewers opt for early access and early access means maintaining a good relationship with a publisher who can revoke your access at any time.. By partaking in early access reviewing, your reviews will get more traffic and therefore the publisher is indirectly paying you for your review

That goes for hardware reviewers as well, most of them do early access hardware reviews

The incentive is by far on the side of the developer not any reviewer/press.

Make a good game, get a good review = marketing you couldn’t get with all the money in the world.

Don’t seed games to press, no ‘free’ marketing, buyers of games stay away because there are no reviews.

That’s how it’s historically worked.

These days people just look more at social media than what professional press/media has to say.

The same applies to established hardware reviewers, they have enough hardware, they don’t need it.

They generally see the package turning up at their door as work, not the 7th ‘free’ phone they have received this month. Ironically, most of the time, they also have to return it afterwards anyway.

Can't say it's too upsetting to hear this. A hollow husk wearing Bioware's skin as a disguise.
Let's just hope those responsible are all pulling a barve to make up for it...

Alright, where's Beadle? I'm not falling for that one.

All the people who made Bioware what it was left a long time ago. It's been twelve years since their last great game, and they've been given far more slack than most other dev houses would get. It's no surprise that the newly debt laden EA would cull them in efforts to service the massive loans they've been loaded with since the vulture capitalists got involved.

So long Bioware, you were great... a long time ago.

As i posted in another thread EA killed them. I liked the first Mass Effect and first Dragon age. But idiots went on to dumbing them down.

Money money money. Chase the money suits. Rather then letting devs do their thing.

Not surprised and tbh not too bothered either. Bioware died a long time ago.
