But why even put this in the game at all? There must have been meetings to go over and sign-off on these messages. What value did it add?
It just highlights how far they'd fallen as a studio.
It's just like that meme:
"Will this add to the storyline, and improve the quality of the game?"
"The what?"
There's also the very important factor of, you know. . .
It's (supposed) be be an RPG, people like reading those things and if they didn't they'd surely not be in the game? They also take up development time, so presumably there's reasoning behind them existing in that vein.
"I don't mind a thing/partake in a thing/see a thing, therefore it isn't a problem!" is a pretty bleak and reductive outlook, but in the case of the person your quoting he's at least honest in having not had much interest in the franchise prior.
Those same people are kicking up a fuss about a very easily missable cosmetic only pride flag, in a choice of flags, in the latest Gears of War
No they're not.
The latest Gears of War is a so-so third person shooter at absolute best, they're annoyed at multiple elements -- the weird flags are simply one part of it, and far more blatant when you pop into multiplayer. People were sold a game that went back to the roots with major favourite characters of the original trilogy, for some god forsaken reason an insufferably vocal and constant female companion was needlessly injected into it. And before anyone jumps on the obvious bandwagon, yes I've played it and no I'm not against female characters in games. Mags is bloody awful and serves no positive purpose to the overall narrative of the franchise or the game itself, it would have been better without her in it.
I wouldn't have brought it up at all if you hadn't prior.
There's a rather relevant quote knocking around regarding certain types of discourse being impossible because X or Y people like to pretend they don't understand the argument, or are simply vehemently arguing about things they're not fully informed on.
Constant goalpost shifting, "I don't care, why do you?" and lord knows what else from people who apparently do not care and expect others to feel the same way.
It gets tiresome.
