Virgin 20meg upgrade it's a joke

I'd be well chuffed with that Wingz, I'm in Cardiff and I still can't get much more than 450kb/sec from the blueyonder games server and thats after sending about 16 minutes at 25p a minute on the phone to VM.

They were supposed to have raised an incident on it, but that was two days ago.

if it's no better by tomorrow I'm back on the blower to them but not the 25p a minute lot!!

doggo

what area of cardiff are you in? i think people in the Roath area are most affected because its jam pack with students :p

Mine seems MUCH improved tonight. I don't use speedtest because its a load of tosh, I tested it using downloads from various places. Speed is back up and latency is back down :)

I'm near Leeds.

My upgrade from 10mb to 20mb aint started, and currently I'm onyl getting 190kilobytes /sec at the mo on a 10mb connection!

What a load of tosh!

Customers Affected Broadband Internet

Detailed Description
We are aware that some of our XL Broadband (20Mbps) customers are experiencing disappointing download speeds at the moment. A small number of customers who've recently been upgraded have reported slower than expected speeds, which we're working hard to rectify. We will naturally investigate any individual reports to resolve one-off faults or localised issues. As the UK's largest home broadband provider, and winner of ISPA's Best Consumer Broadband ISP award, we want you to enjoy the fastest, widely available Internet access available.

That’s a load of old bull ****, I originally opened this thread and I'm still getting no faster than 5.5MB downloads, even after 16 or so minutes on the phone to India last Tuesday :( They did all the usual stuff like have you tried connecting directly to the PC not through a router, they ran some ping tests and even had me do some downloading from the MS website, it ended with the tech support person saying they would log an incident with the engineers and it should be resolved in a couple of days

When I rang last Friday they gave me some old pony about there being a computer problem at their end and the service requests might be a few days delayed. The girl on the phone then suggests I give tech support a ring early this week if the problem had not been solved. Are they doing this as a money making excursive to help them out of their financial difficulties :(

I rarely had good speeds when I was supposed to be getting the 10MB service, I think if it's not sorted soon I'm off to ADSL

To be fair, my speeds *seem* to have gone up a bit and disconnections are rarer.. I can now (but not always) get around 1.7-1.8Mbps download:

Damn that Vista snipping tool and it's red border

and this is the 20MB service!!!

I've just spent 30 minutes on the phone again to customer services and tech support, tech support say there dosen't seem to be a problem  at least they will now be sending out an engineer, but I've got to wait till next Monday, I had to remind customer services that I was actualy paying them to provide a service not them paying me all I got was the offer of a discount first of all, I said I would take the discount but that still wouldn't resolve the fact that I'm not getting a 20MB service or anywhere near it. No wonder they can't make any money.

I have exactly the same stats tonight on the line but can't be bothered with all the B/S of speaking to their "not very technical" guys...

PLEASE READ!!!

Speedtests don't WORK!!!

The connection is too fast for them to contain.

Best thing is down load Star Downloader, find a decent site with a half decent download speed. And Set it to download 10 threads, and then see if you are getting the 2400 download speed.

If its less than 17000 there is something wrong,

Don't use Speedtests, i've never got more than 15 in a speedtest, yet i download constantly at 2.3mbps

We seem to have had the Virgin Media 20meg upgrade her in Cardiff and what a load of rubbish it is.

I've checked my modem status and it's showing Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000 & Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000 so it's been upgraded but the best speeds I can get is 5445kbs, I've been pinging servers all over the place for a couple of hours and this is the best I've got.

Is anyone else around the Cardiff area getting better results than this or am I just unlucky?

If this is what I can expect for £37 a month  , they can get stuffed they're having a laugh. If it carrys on like this I think it's back to ADSL for me.

doggo
the max i get is 200kB/s with tiscali. Is that kb/s or kB/s?

People take what speedtest says too heart too much, i have run tests and thought god my adsl is slow tonight, but then i downloaded off ati and my speed was normal, speed test is a crap way of checking your speeds.

Well I can certainly confirm that mine is working - picked up WHS from Microsoft and got speeds up to about 2.3mb/s - pings still nice and low too! Was a whinger - now a firm convert! (Though I really don't think I need 20mb - will probably downgrade in the near future!) :D (I'm in Carterton near Oxford BTW)

I had a VM engineer around the other day, he did a test on my line and said the everything seemed fine, then he gets on the phone to someone and is talking to them for about five minutes, when he gets off the phone he tells me there is a problem with the UBR that I'm attached to, he tells me the UBR is under heavy useage and needs a upgrade but they don't know when it will be done as nothing has been schedualed.

I think I'll downgrade my service as it seems I'm only going to get 5meg at best so I might as well only be paying for that sort of speed.

Thats exactly the same situation as me! I can get 20mb speeds sometimes so Im just keeping it as it is! But the UBR that I'm on has been overloaded for years and they have never admitted it, well Blueyonder never admitted it, but Virgin just have :/

Don't know what's wrong with mine tbh. My brother is hosting the internet, we use a Motorolla SB5100 modem, and a cheap hub to connect all the PCs to it. The modem supposedly is capable of 20mb although it is pretty old 3-4 years or so. I've occasionally gone to download a file and it started at 1.4mb/sec and then have it go down to 200kb/sec in about 20 seconds. As of right now I'm downloadig at 650kb/sec, my upload is 90kb/sec it was 30kb/sec before the upgrade took place but the download speed never budged. Never downloaded over 700kb/sec though, been upgraded for at least a month. Any ideas?
