New summer transfer thread

hmm, not sure i rate him that highly. don't get me wrong i wouldn't complain if we got him but i'd feel ddgy paying over £15mill for him. mind you if bent is worth 16 then obviously he's worth more than that.

SSN are saying that Berbatov's agent has told them that Utd have enquired about him, only seen it going across the bottom of the screen so whether he's talking about a previous enquirey or one now im not sure.

edit: here's a link to the story, the approach was made on Friday and his agents says Spurs are meeting in the next day or so to decide his future.

Maybe agent causing trouble, thats what they do best. However it's no secret that SAF would like Berbatov next season and Berbatov would like to come at some point so who knows.

I'd be worried by his reaction of being subbed vs Sunderland, he obviously expects to be playing every minute of every game and i can't see him getting that at Utd.

It's a bit worrying that despite Martin Jol making his feelings known that the board are going to discuss it anyway. I think if Berbatov went to the board and said I'd like to move then it would happen. I don't think it will though, because he's made a promise to stay for another season.

@ Baz, the improved chances of winning silverware and playing in the Champions League would compensate him not playing 90 minutes of every game for us. I think the fact that Ferguson has yet again enquired about him this summer means Saha doesn't feature in his long term plans. The decision may be made on Sundays result, if Spurs lose or more importantly get dominated and completely thrashed by us and the board are again turning on Jol, then it could signal both their departures before the end of the week. It's all 'ifs and buts' though.

£20m for Berbatov seems a lot, and should we spend that on him this summer's transfers would rival some of my efforts on Football Manager i.e. completely ridiculous money but well appreciated by the fans.

But do you think that at 28 (which he'll be by next summer) that he'll be content being cover for Rooney and Tevez (presuming you come up with a system to fit those 2 in together), which surely he'll be? And also the price you'll have to pay to tempt Spurs into letting him go, would that be good business considering his age and presuming he'll be a bit-part player?

Remember Tevez is only on loan.... surely we can stop that deal next summer if necessary (not saying Tevez is better or worse than Beba, but £5m for what should be a quality player for 1 season is a reasonable price)

He only just turned 26 in January there. He won't be a bit part player though, as I think Rooney will start playing as a midfielder. It all depends who gels with who really. Ferguson wouldn't spend that amount of money on cover, if anything it'll be Tevez who will be the cover for Rooney/Berbatov.

Sorry meant 27.

Would Rooney really become a midfielder? Fair enough if you decide not to sign Tevez after the 2 years but if you do i can't see you spending £20m+ on 2 strikers to go along with Rooney and be able to fit them all in and keep them happy.

Presuming Rooney starts every game and with the attacking midfielders you have it becomes difficult to fit 1 of those 2 in let alone both of them and like you say i can't see you spending big money on somebody other than a regular first team player.

And do you really need Berbatov? Like Rooney and Tevez he likes to come deep and link with the midfield and imo with Saha out you lack somebody that will turn defences and send them the other way. Imo you'd be far better off going for somebody like Defoe who's at a better age, better price and will offer you something different to what you have.

Yeah it would be a nice problem to have if we signed him. I think Rooney could easily take over the Scholes role, I think Ferguson knows from experience that it's better to have options ahead of a big player retiring, Giggs and Scholes spring to mind.

You have to remember you've just spent big money on Anderson and Nani to replace those though.

In theory it looks a nice problem to have but if you look back to similar situations when you signed Veron and RVN and last summer when Chelsea signed Sheva and Ballack, it ended up back-firing with both sides switching formations just to accomendate all the 'stars'.

I can't see how you'd be able to keep all 3 happy, presuming you take up the option on Tevez and like i said, from a footballing perspective Berbatov doesn't offer you anything different from what you have.

Nearly choked on my dodgy supermarket imitation red bull this morning when I red that Villa were looking at paying £15m for Defoe. Surely at that price the Spurs board will be flying him up to birmingham?

Berbatov seems to have a poor attitude and is over rated too. On top of that, he doesn't give us anything new, as mentioned. We should spend the money elsewhere. Lahm for example :)

How can Berbatov be worth £20m when hes had 1 good season ? What if he was just a one-hit wonder ?
