GTS 320Mb Vs GTS 640Mb Vs 2900XT

thats one thing im sure about, crysis will run great straight out the box on the g80, but for people like me on ati cards, we are gonna have to wait for updated drivers to sort things out.

I hear a lot of 2900XT owners complaining about power, temps and noise. Can someone please tell me what temps should I expect for the 640mb and the 2900XT(with stock coolers)?Would be an interesting comparison.I would also like to know what power each card needs,on idle and load.

I've had an 8800GTS, 2 infact, and now a HD2900XT.

The 8800GTS (my first one), at 620/980 overclock had an idle temp of about 60 degrees and a load of 84, now my second 8800 from EVGA (EVGA ACS3 KO 8800GTS 640), that was overclocked to 650/2.2, idle temps were around 55, load around 77.

The 2900XT idles around 55 at stock clocks and is in the 70's at load, but thats when the fan gets loud, I limit it to 31, in game it gets to around 80-85 degrees depending on what game it is, and that was at overclock settings too at load.

Now, 50W more power consumption over an 8800GTS the 2900XT is, nothing to worry about there, it is a noisy fan, and anyone who's is silent all the time must have very high temps, going up to 85+ degrees load since the fan is only silent at 25%, and then it is silent, but temps can get up to 100 degrees.

It does depend on the case cooling, I've got the side of the case off, and lots of fans.

Have you seen my case? It's ****, does not support 120mm fans, and I cant afford a new one.

I dont loose at all, It's not desperation at all, and I havent got increased noise, if anything it's a lot quieter, and when I have the side of the case on, it's louder due to the 2 80mm fans on the side, and also its below me in the desk.

Shocky-FM, I dont lose at all, wtf are you talking about... you're saying my system is a failure just coz I had the side of the case off?? What makes you think that?

BTW, just like some of our Generators at work, some run cooler with doors open some need doors closed as of design, they suck air in rear and out front of radiator, they actually suck the doors shut if not locked open with the Stays.

PC cases are kind of the same, you can run it with no sides and fans on parts will cool them parts but actual Mobos parts etc will get hotter, they need a airflow from front to rear (normally), every little chip and mosfet gets airflow ideally, I imagine HDD runs cooler with sides on so air is going in over them at front of case not wasted out side and everywhere.

Again it all depends on your actual set up, I close case as of , airflow/Noise/Dust (use filters) and my set up runs cooler closed and its part of livingroom so has to be aesthetic.

I know my PC runs cooler with no side on, if you look in the case gallery you will see how crap my case is.

i have 2 2900xt's and i dont experience "too much" extra heat, in games the fan spins up only briefly on load and i dont even notice it in game (to be honest i dont even know if it does or not lol) and i definately can't hear it over my cpu cooler (zalman 9700 (when thats spinning on full)) all in all cracking card(s)

Well if you can afford to buy all that hardware in your sig then a new case and some fans should be no problem, it's just my opinion of course but to me having a case open is amateurish and displays a certain level of incompetence. But an open case does make more noise and attract dust, fact.

When you say PC is cooler, is that like CPU/GPU and Chipset on Mobo that can actually measure temps, what about the complete PCB of every card and every chip/mosfet on them PCB's and HDD's, they are going to be losing a lot of airflow.

BTW, With your spec, I have no clue why you do not take care of it more by putting in a nice case.

What you chatting ... its a common suggestion to keep temps down, i use to have to have the side of on my old computer of or it all overheat and restart.

All this amateurish and incompetence stuff your talking about is a load crap tbh ... its just a side of a case ...

i think he means that if your cooling is not up to scratch then upgrade the cooling rather than take the side panel off to solve the problem.

im not tooo fussed how others do it, but i prefer to have all the panels on and on my old case i drilled holes for 12cm fan on the side panel and the top of the case to get more cooling rather than leave the panels off.
but it was a 7 year old case i had and back in the old days pc heat was not an issues but the case stuck with me for vasious builds till it got to the point of holding me back on cooling.
so my 2 options were either a coolermaster stacker or a antec 900 for cooling power. i went with the antec 900 since its half the price of the stacker, was the best 50 quid i ever spent.

but side panels off are funny though, i love the old skool ghetto cooling mods. but in this day and age people seem to be moving away from them, and beige cases are on the way out for silver and black cases. and everyone is after silence these days.

or its probably me just getting too old now. :)
