OcUK Photo Comp - Season Six : Round Seven - "Abstract" RESULTS

Very happy with my place :D I felt this was my best competition shot and it was reflected in the results. Thanks again to judges and growse

how many apples do you see like that, that is not an apple in 'recognisable reality'.
It's a real apple with real blades stuck into it. That doesn't make it abstract, that makes it surreal. No?

you cannot apply the same guidelines to abstract photography as you can with art, because with photography you are capturing reality (unless you have a very posh lens that has a worm hole etc in it).
Abstract photography is the same as abstract art. With both mediums you are concentrating more on the form, colour and texture than you are on the object. You cannot seriously tell me that a painting of an apple with blades sticking out of it would be called abstract!

(see where i'm going with this?)
No :)

I agree with you 100%. When I conceived the idea for the image, I did think it was more surrealistic than anything else. It did require abstract thinking to arrive at the decision to combine these objects with oneanother, so mabye thats how I justified it to myself. As you say though, the end result is more surreal. TBH I wasn't sure where I'd get with the image in the comp myself.

I didn't expect to come joint first!

Not bad, was my first entry ever. Epic Fail on impact however  :(

I'm sure I've read it somewhere but can someone briefly explain tech/theme/impact marking scheme?

Must say that I'm inclined to agree :)

Tech, how good to photo is with regards to sharpness/noise/lighting/ etc.

Theme, how well it conforms to the judges interpretation of the theme set.

Impact, a hard to define quality which accounts for the subjective nature of photography, not everything can be quantified as technical excellence or rigid conformity to the theme. The easiest way to describe this would be the "wow" factor an image has

Congratulations to the duel winners of the round and many thanks to the judges for the time taken to keep this competition running.

I agree that in future it would be best to have just one winner.
Better to have the judges make this decision in private also, so as not to be accused of favouritism.

Very happy with my place this round. But is it equal 2nd, or is that 4th, or perhaps equal 3rd? :p

I also agree there should be one winner. You don't have two winners in any other competitions. There should be a clear structure, so maybe have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. At least that way you'll be able to see the differences in quality, with reasons behind the choices clearly evident.

Personally the two photos that won, are not of the same quality in my opinion.

New Rule:

*In the event of the scores being tied for first place the judges will decide among themselves on whom the winner is.

Was there a private message function on here? I need to contact Danza re the next theme isn't it.

And as I didn't before, I'd also like to thank the judges for their time. :)

There's no private mesage function here.

As you haven't got enough posts to activate your trust, you probably can't see mine to find my email either!

Any update on a theme? If you decide can you please email it to me (in trust).

thank-you :)

i wasn't expecting a huge score on that one, i did struggle - thanks for judging though :)

Interested to hear your thoughts on that matter, El.

Nope, I'll keep them to myself. It'll only sound overly harsh, and it's from a personal perspective too, so it'll just start a stupid forum "toy out of pram" issue that I really can't be bothered with.

:)

abstract
1 theoretical rather than physical or concrete.

Then explain how an apple with some scalpel blades sticking out of it is abstract. It's not theorectical, as it's really there, and it's a recognisable object.

The apple pictured is theoretical, for you would not ever find an apple like that in reality. The fact that the theoretical nature of the apple was artificially created is neither here nor there, a natural abstract is an oxymoron.
This scalpel-apple is most definitely apart from concrete existence.

Unless of course... you have seen one of these apples in nature? (please provide photographic proof though, as I for one don't believe scalpel-apples actually exist at all).

Xolotl, as trust is no longer functioning, I can't get your email addy. Can you let me know it, so I can let you know the next theme.

Cheers ;)

DUH! I've just noticed the trust button in the bottom of your (and everyone with their trust activated) post :o

I've emailed you RE the next theme ;)

Cheers

Congrats to the winners :)

I'm quite pleased with my result, as my image was more one of those impulse photos and wasn't something I thought about too much. There could be something in that :)

I'm currently in the lake district on the end of a very flaky gprs connection, so could one of the judges kindly mail me a zip of all the images and I'll try and get the results site updated at the weekend or the beginning of next week.
