*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Zen officially supports 2666 DDR4 in the Same Way the 7700K supports 2133 DDR4, its not the limit.

What memory speed it will actually run is unknown but there is no reason to think it wont run the fastest memory available.

silent scone bet his reputation that not only will they not use faster ram , that we will not see 4ghz cpu`s either

Well, I'm sure he knows what he's talking about.

well from the latest info the official support is 2400mhz ram (and silent scone bet his reputation that not only will they not use faster ram , that we will not see 4ghz cpu`s either)

so yes , we`ll see 3000+ ram and at least 4ghz cpu`s from the latest leaks

Can I suggest you don't quote me unless you can get what I've said correct?

Thanks.

I've said 4Ghz OC is possible, I've also said 2666 memory is likely preferable for plug and play - which most users will probably want to opt for.

So saying "3000+ at least" is a little pot kettle if you're trying to chastise me for lying yourself. Just keep that in mind, please. At the end of the day, it will be what it will be. I don't proclaim to be 100% on what the maximum operational/unconditional frequency will be.

P.S no love lost, but this is simply my opinion...

This.
Hopefully it has a strong IMC :)

As for the cost of motherboards, i went from X58 to X79, I'm used to the cost. Though I will add that i don't appreciated all of the jazzed up boards with RGB LEDs and the like, the hell is that all about?

Everyone loves RGB. Guess AMD folks are a bit late to the party :p

You never miss a chance for a dig at AMD or AMD buyers do you?

It was a joke. I just had the mental image of Rowley Birkin types confuzzled over all the blinking lights! I'm not a fan of RGB, so it was meant to be slightly sarcastic.

For the record......

2666(OC) for DRAM. That's likely as good as it gets.

Called it... ;)

It's going to take someone with more patience than I have to make you understand it.

Quality in components and layers only go so far to minimise signal issues that determine what frequencies you can reach. Ultimately, it comes down to the quality of the IMC as to the maximum supported ratio. If you don't think that's correct, I suggest you ask someone else to confirm for you.

If we see AM4 boards running 3866Mhz DRAM or upward this side of Christmas, I will give you my PC.

The problem with this statement is, and knowing you, you'd see someone ran PI with Wazza at 2800Mhz and giggle like a Japanese school girl as if that proves anything :p

I think it's some peoples perceptions/understanding that makes this topic a little cloudy.

You're still not getting it, sorry bud.

Does anybody know at this stage re support for ECC ram on AM4 ?

There's some rumours floating around about the ones ending in Pro maybe supporting it, but no solid evidence to back it up.

Whats everyones thoughts on Ram for Zen? so far we know it will support 3000mhz Ram (Pretty sure this was leaked a few places) officially we know its 2666mhz i think? according to Asus Slides?

Fairly certain we can probably get away with higher rated RAM, and from the AT forums thread with that Passmark BM result it was plainly obvious ram speed and timings will be extremely important in a Ryzen build.

So with that said, whats the best option? to buy something like 3600mhz and downclock it to say 3200mhz and tighten up the CAS timings or something? im not overly familiar with ram overclocking tbh, i normally just buy whatever speed ram looks to be the best and then use the XMP profile for it lol. But i know you can get some small gains if you bother to tinker, and reading that AT forums thread it definitely seems like this will be almost a necessity.

Thoughts?
I only had a quick look recently but it seemed as if most games didn't benefit from anything faster than 3000 MHz (using a GTX 1080 I believe). There's always a cut-off point, beyond which the cost just jumps for negligible benefit. Haven't checked other sites but at OcUK, 3200 MHz RAM is 17% more expensive than 3000 MHz.

My experience of top ASUS AM3+ motherboards is that the best one I ever had for OC was the M5A99X evo, a tier 2 motherboard from ASUS, it was better than the Crosshair V (non Z) formula that I replaced it with to go water cooling.

The M5 could reach a bus clock of 350Mhz (ref. 200MHz) whereas the Crosshair was good for 280Mhz. The bus overclock meant a lot of flexibility on memory OC.

The sweet spot for the FX8350 was at 16 x 300Mhz (4.8GHz).

Currently my FX9590 sits stock in a £65 Asrock mobo. I have not overclocked in this setup but it is stable at 4.7GHz with 5GHz turbo frequency.

Looking to get a 1700X if it seems good.
