*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

LOL,I don't care what socket it is I don't think I would want to pay over £200 for one,but some of those Z270 ones take the meaning of overpriced to a new level.

Edit!!

It must be all those LEDs,since LED christmas tree lights are very expensive I heard.

Im not paying Asus tax this time round anyhow, Asrock make really decent motherboards, i'll stick with them, skipping MSI and Gigabyte also this time.

Tempted to just go balls to the wall and go max on everything, 1800x, X370, 64GB 4000 Ram etc lol, might have to downclock the ram or buy lower rated if the motherboard and CPU has issues though.

Ryzen cant come soon enough, my wallet is ready!

So we are looking at next Friday for the launch date(24th), I see no winking Gibbo smiley yet.

seen 24th in a couple places now in reference to more info, maybe its the end of the NDA, maybe its a whole heap of nothing. all signs point to GDC

Maybe I'm missing something but is $149 terrible for a decent x370 board? There is a $200 one for people who want 2x killer nic and other completely pointless things added.

But there have always been absurdly priced versions of all boards with mostly pointless things added on to entice mostly those with more money than sense. Some boards genuinely overclock better, but in most cases we're talking about 50Mhz difference on a 4-4.5Ghz gpu which can't be felt in any way at all, to me that isn't worth $50 more let alone any more than that.

The most notable difference with the Intel side SKUs is memory overclocking on the 4 layer boards compared with the higher end offerings. That and features / IO, obviously. I can't see that Gigabyte Aura price being right, there is literally no reason for that board to be that expensive.

Whats everyones thoughts on Ram for Zen? so far we know it will support 3000mhz Ram (Pretty sure this was leaked a few places) officially we know its 2666mhz i think? according to Asus Slides?

Fairly certain we can probably get away with higher rated RAM, and from the AT forums thread with that Passmark BM result it was plainly obvious ram speed and timings will be extremely important in a Ryzen build.

So with that said, whats the best option? to buy something like 3600mhz and downclock it to say 3200mhz and tighten up the CAS timings or something? im not overly familiar with ram overclocking tbh, i normally just buy whatever speed ram looks to be the best and then use the XMP profile for it lol. But i know you can get some small gains if you bother to tinker, and reading that AT forums thread it definitely seems like this will be almost a necessity.

Thoughts?

Bare in mind that it comes with a pre-fitted water block, so the water cooling users it's aimed at will factor that into the price. It also has drool worthy connectivity (and of course the RGBs), I just hope somebody makes an AM4 board with half that connectivity lol.

well from the latest info the official support is 2400mhz ram (and silent scone bet his reputation that not only will they not use faster ram , that we will not see 4ghz cpu`s either)

so yes , we`ll see 3000+ ram and at least 4ghz cpu`s from the latest leaks

Well i had:
Asus Gene fry 2 times on warranty on my 2500k.....
X99 MSI Gaming 7 --- 3 motherboards DIED on warranty each lasted 6-7 months same problem DEAD BIOS chip. Had Gigabyte and Asrock while waiting for RMA. Total lost 200 pounds on this RMA bul**** on shipments and... Selling 1 month old motherboards once i had MSI back.....

So far Asrock is best 8 months no problems at all !!!

So next MB will be asrock not Asus or MSI

The same as any CPU really, you can either buy regular RAM that fits under a heatsink and runs cool or if you want to be l33t you can buy super OC RAM with huge gaudy heat spreaders that runs hot and gives 2-3FPS extra (obviously there are middle grounds).
