Racist! Really?

The question of the artist being deliberate or not is an interesting one, but I'd argue that the artist chose to depict Williams in a way reminiscent of those old racist cartoons as it was an easy visual gag.
Yes, and that's why I say you see what you want to see and make it what you want it to be.

EDIT: The same way that some comments on the twitter page say that the picture is clearly depicting 'white is good, black is bad' because of the other player apparently appearing to be a slim, blonde white girl next to the big, angry black monster with giant lips.

It just isn't that deep.

So I just did this:

Using the colour grabber tool. I took multiple samples from Serena as she is 'front and centre' and so her skin tone has more detail due to lighting, I took samples from both light and dark points on the cartoon. Osaka's skin tone is depicted more monochromatically.

Has Osaka been white washed? Or more likely is it something to do with grey/grey contrast? Idk. Colour disparities don't look that different. But quite clearly the 'white' umpire has a different skin tone to both serena and Osaka.

As for Osaka being blonde, she has blonde highlights on her pony tail sticking out of her cap, which is exactly what is depicted in the cartoon.

Also as for her lips looking big, do they actually look that big? I think the big tongue makes them look bigger than they are tbh.

And that's where I say, it stretches my incredulity to think it's not deliberate. Look at it. It's an old racist cartoon trope. Be scared of the negro. He's an animal etc. Here the opponent is whitewashed and the umpire is telling her to "let her win". That's compounded by the visual representation of Williams as an oversized and powerful gorilla like woman. Osaka the meek pale skinned subjugated.

It's plain as day.

All of which should have been (or was) considered by the cartoonist and the editor of the publication. It looks like what it looks like.

Not seen the image in print, but Osaka certainly isn't white in the image linked in the OP - look at the umpire; he's white (well, pink) and Osaka is a light brown. Though she is oddly blonde - so, blonde-washing maybe?

well she is and oversized and powerful woman

as for gorilla - there isn't any reference to gorillas in the cartoon, she's got dark skin and a flat nose in the cartoon, you might argue that that is gorilla-like... but she's got dark skin and a flat nose in real life.

The whitewashing claim just serves the racist theme which is why the claim is made despite the objective fact that Osaka is not the same colour as the only clearly white person in the cartoon as you have pointed out.

Well to me it looks like what it looks like. That is that the umpire is clearly white, and both Serena and Osaka are clearly not white. Or at least are not the same skin tone as the umpire.

Well, the thing is, me finding the cartoon offensive, means the cartoon is offensive (to me). And there's perfectly rational reasons why I find it offensive. You not being offended by it doesn't make it any less offensive.

And I'm not choosing to see it in any way. that's just the way I see it. Nothing to do with right or wrong.

No more than her opponent, who is represented as anything but.

I'm not going to argue the toss about this with people that just post essentially "no it isn't" or "I can't see it". I've stated why I think it's racist. If you'd like to say why it's not reminiscent of those Old Tom cartoons (which I think it is) and is therefore AT LEAST racist by association, please go ahead. Otherwise, don't involve me. I can't be bothered.

The argument isn't case of "no it isn't" or "I can't see it", the argument is that it's just a caricature, like these:

Which I spotted, and quoted, but I disagree that she is white.
I never said she was. Who are you disagreeing with?
Are you talking about the cartoon? I'm taking about the pic of her in real life that I posted.

Erm, thought that it was quite self-explanatory:
