Thanks Dan. I took the leap and signed up yesterday. Moving because Zen works out cheaper for me actually.

Hi Housey just read your link.... ouch, the pain.. but glad to see it was worth it in the end as you said "for speed innit?".
Looking foward to my Zen line going live end of this month.

Whats interesting for me right now is that it just so happens I manged to borrow a friends Fritz!box 7530 German version for testing (until Zens Standard issue FB 7530 International Version arrives) with intresting results.
For background, I have been with Vivaciti for 3 years on an 80/20 since we first got FTTC. I'm about 550-575m from my Huwaei FTTC cabinet BDCM (broadcom DSLAM). My RJ11 modem cable is cat5e from a filtered face plate (cable is crimped in)
Now heres where things get interesting for me I have tried quite a few modem routers over the years on FTTC, Draytek (lowest sync speed, errors), Zyxel (meh), Asus 88U (software was rough prone to restarts and stutter), the small Cisco RV134W (nice solid line but very scant GUI that didnt even have an xdsl info tab built in), Billion 8800AXL R2 (meh, prone to slowing down after some time and errors) and most recently an unlocked Tim Hub DGA4132 (speedy but prone to stutter when surfing).
As you can see other than the draytek these are all broadcom xdsl chipset based.

With all these modems the fastest download speeds I had was
Attanable 65-67ish Mbps
Actual 63-67ish other than Draytek which was about 60Mbps
In all cases Upload never exceeded 7-8 Mbps (irresepective)

Now With the FB 7530 my down load speed is 71,01 Mbit/s and upload is 10,770 Mbit/s!!

below is my xDSL info page (in German)

DSLAM-Datenrate Max. kbit/s 80000 20000
DSLAM-Datenrate Min. kbit/s 128 -
Leitungskapazität kbit/s 71057(down) 10773(up) (MAX ATTAINABLE)
Aktuelle Datenrate kbit/s 71019(down) 10770(up) (ACTUAL)
SNR 4 down and 6 up

I find this interesting beacuse my research in trying to get a good modem has always lead back to the rule of thumb that you get best results with a modem with a xdsl chipset matching that of your DSLAM..... the FB 7530 has an Intel VXR 518 xDsl chipset.... and so far its been 24hrs no errors at all and its the fastest most stable modem for me to date. 7 of us all HD streaming surfing and gaming at the same time.

The only issue I continue to have is awful in-game lag and stutter in Arena of Valor (guilty pleasure :p) on Nintendo Switch, even with prioritized port fowarding (poor latency?).

My post may be a bit of a bore for some and of course line stats will always differ from household to household due to the many variables, however for me at least it seems for now the rule of thumb for modem/DSLAM chipset match for best results seems a thing of the past.

At this stage the FB 7530 is actaully a decent piece of kit.

Will report how I get on with Zen and the Interational Version of this modem and also the lag.

Yeah i agree the router zen gives it a lot better.

When i connect to uk servers it gives me a flat 20ms like on every hop most of the time.

The lag is very minimal when compared to virgin media, in my own experiance when you get 20ms pings in games that is.

Yeah well i get 20ms roughly on every hop it is very snappy and responsive when compared to virgin there is quite a big difference for me in games when connected to a uk server.

With virgin i would get something like 30-40ms ping time.

Before i leave virgin media i am gonna do a ping test comparison hold on folks.

Edit,

Below is my ping times with virgin.

Yeah i have two isps at this point in time but virgin is going to be cancelled asap.

The reasons i went with zen was their reviews on trustpilot as well as awards but more importantly the price is fixed unlike virgin which seem to have increased their prices over time for sure.

The zen network is at the very least more predictable and more consistent with those ping times when compared to virgin but then no isp is perfect but my games have less lag since i have experienced both zen and virgin, i'd pick zen over virgin for gaming.

This here is what virgin are charging us below.

Fastest download speed I have seen. Normally I get between 300 and 310 on average, uploads actually usually 50-52. I no longer seem to suffer any form of slowdown again, which is what I have always experienced with Zen unless there is an issue in the network somewhere, which is very rare.

The higher DL speeds might just be because you have synced with a DS SNR of 4dB as opposed to the normal 6dB giving you the few extra Mbps. Though its hard to say without seeing the stats from the other devices.

I'm with Zen too, have been for a while. No complains here, could argue the price but I don't think there's much in it anymore is there?

I'm debating getting G.fast as its available here.....
Code:
VDSL Range A (Clean) 80 63.1 20 19 57.3 Available --
VDSL Range B (Impacted) 80 60 20 19 54.5 Available --
G.fast Range A (Clean) 249.1 218.6 36.2 16.1 182 Available --
G.fast Range B (Impacted) 283 198.1 32.9 14 173.9 Available --

As for kit, I use an unlocked HG612 and a Asus RT-AC86U running the latest Merlin FW. Been rock solid, only reboots if I do it myself, I had a good 300 days of uptime before this....

My stat from DSLStats that runs 24/7 on a RPiZero:

Not sure if this means anything in terms of an upgrade.

Just drove past my cabinet which had a small road works group in front of It, the cab is open there was some pipe work for ducting I assume, in the back of the truck I saw a small but tallish box completely covered in what looked like silver foil assuming some type of water proof.

Does this mean anything special? The cab is already fttc enabled, doesn’t have g.fast

I've learned never to take anything that BTOR as a sign of anything really happening. Our new FTTC cabinet appeared on our village green in April 2017. We all got connected up to it eventually in June 2018.

So it may mean something but don't expect it any time soon. That way you can only be delighted if something good happens quickly :)

To be fair to them, in contrast to this, our cabinet got upgraded seemingly overnight completely pointlessly to G.Fast 330/50 (and then went live a couple of weeks later) despite us already having 80/20 FTTC and 1000/1000 FTTP in the village. They are an unpredictable bunch!

I’m happy with my 80/20 package, just thought it was weird seeing a small construction crew by it haha :D

Ok update to this, checking roadworks.org this has come up

Roadworks, delays unlikely 17 Jan - 21 Jan

Description: CWMBRAN 18 - DSLAM 612399 - Reshell existing Cab with associated new plinth and approx 3m of duct work in FW

No clue what any of that means.

I know they've had to reshell a fair few of the old PCP cabs that they couldn't attach a G.fast cab too, so its quite possible.

The one behind is the fttc cab I believe.

Oh well, I waited over ten years to get rid of 5meg down internet, think I can wait a lil longer to get rid of 80meg down xD

Bit weird if it is an extension, the area is not that hugely populated if I’m honest and even then it’s mostly old people that live in my area

As someone who worked in adult education in my younger days (CLAIT/IBT2/IT For the terrified etc.), I can confirm: Old people like the porns.

On a separate note, i'm currently in an argument with BT's CEO complaints team over the existence of the product they have sold me... Apparently (despite BT Wholesale selling it, it being trialled in our area for approaching two years and me having working service), I can't possibly have it and must be wrong. On the up-side i'm currently only being billed £20/m for g.fast, perhaps I should have just kept quiet about the lack of phone number.

Oh, hate to say it but that pod on the side isn't a G.fast pod, it has no air vents/grills on it. Example: https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.p...s-g-fast-broadband-cabinet-extension-pod.html

That looks like a bog standard extension for more FTTC lines. Sorry.

What's that behind it? One of these on this page? https://kitz.co.uk/adsl/fttc-cabinets.htm#fttc_street_cabinet

I'm not so sure. It doesn't have the vented front door but it doesn't look like a copper line extension pod either.

Look at this - https://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/7662-gillingham-sees-first-live-g-fast-connection-go-live

Nokia pods have vents at the bottom, Huawei ones have vents at the bottom and the top. Looks like it's a Nokia pod that you've had installed.

Interesting I've not seen those before, looks like you could well be right. I've posted it on the Kitz forum as they will know. :)
