My hair transplant journey

Thanks elrasho.
The clinic I went to advises not to wear anything on your head for at least 2 weeks after the op.

My head was hardly swollen, you'd be more self aware of the big bandages covering the back of your head. But no one gives a second glance as there's plenty of other people out there who've had a hair transplant.
They gave me shampoo, saline solution and a special foam to spray on everyday until all the scabs come off on around day 10.

They also gave me one of those neck travel pillows to sleep with and a cover for the aeroplane headrest to minimise chance of infection on the way home.

To sleep I had 2 pillows and the neck cushion so your reclined.

Well guys, being the decisive type, after posting in this thread I went for a consultation a couple of weeks ago and was told that there was a spare slot on short notice... which was basically yesterday. The cost for 2000-2500 grafts was £6600 when converted from EUR to GBP.

After only a weekend of thinking it over I came to the conclusions that

a) I don't want to lose more hair and I would hate shaving my head.
b) The best time to do it is Winter as no there is no heat or sweat pervading everything like in Summer.
c) The best time to do it, in addition to it being Winter, is certainly while COVID is making socializing difficult so I can be hidden away safely for a few weeks.

So, I accepted the appointment. I went there yesterday and was operated on by an Iranian husband and wife with almost 10 years experience of doing transplant and they were lovely people who made me feel really at ease. They were also very supportive of me on getting the op done before I had experienced too much noticeable hair loss, as people often leave it a lot later when loss has got to the point when people are already used to seeing their lack of hair and it can then be more jarring/obvious to people that know you that you have had it done.

It started with shaving my head... holy ****! Since I was a baby there has never been a time where I have not had hair on my head, so looking in the mirror and seeing myself with a shaven head was a real shock. I looked a lot like someone out of American History X, a lean and mean looking member of a skinhead gang. Grim! The doctors were telling me I looked like some well-known rapper whose name I forgot, but I told them that I considered that a mortal insult. :D

They then drew on my head the areas suffering from loss that needed to be replenished which was my crown area and front hair line. Next came the injections of local anaesthetic, which were of course very unpleasant but not too bad with little pain. Then came the incisions, which were worse as the front of the head is very sensitive so i could feel it and needed more injections to compensate. Graft removal was fine, no pain, just the feeling of the drill going to work as by that point my head was numb to the world. Thankfully, my donor area was ideal so lots of 2 and 3 sprouts of hairs to use. After that it was just the grafts being put into the incisions, which was also ok but by that point I had started to lose a bit of the numbness so was getting a gradual headache as well as feeling muggy from the anaesthetic. The entire procedure took 6 or so hours including lunch. Afterwards I was given a saline salt spray for my head along with antibiotics and painkillers and then sent home.

Later that evening I had a banging headache so went to bed at around 730pm, using a travel neck pillow which was not the softest. Managed to sleep in fits for around 6 hours so got up this morning very early and will hopefully be exhausted tonight for a better sleep. Head feels much better today, thankfully, so again have the day off work and will just chillax and eat well and nap if I can.

So yeah there you go... executive action taken and by Summer I will hopefully have a restored growth of hair and no longer have to worry about the premature genetic hair loss on my crown that my dad and granddad gifted to me. I'll report back if anything significant happens. :)

Grafts? What type of transplant are you having? I thought the whole horrifying cutting bits away and gafting was a thing of the past and the FUE it's just the follicle that is removed not any skin.
I had FUE and they are still grafts, it's just done in a less invasive way with no line of scarring https://www.bernsteinmedical.com/hair-transplant/fue/fue-vs-fut/#:~:text=In FUT, the donor strip is removed from the mid,the balding process over time.

There's still drilling, incisions and blood as part of the process. :)

Good on you Richdog for getting it done.
My first night's sleep was really unsettled but each night got a little better, when you can sleep normal again it's like heaven.
So it's coming up to 10 weeks now and seems like i'm in the small minority who didn't shed. I'm really pleased with how it's going considering month 4 is when most people start seeing positive results.
I'm booked in at the barbers next week just to tidy up the back and sides. It's still slightly red in the recipient area but feels completely normal.

Cheers mate! Actually the first night was tolerable but a now I've taken the bandages off of the back today the donor area is super raw and sensitive so no idea how i will sleep tonight unless I chug another painkiller! :D

Happy that yours was a success, you must be over the moon! Roll on Summer. :)

Well, almost all of the scabs have fallen off (it looks like an army of bugs coming off of my head, ugh) and the skin is now beginning the healing process. At the moment the new hair feels a bit different... thicker and less densely spaced, but it's still early days and it may all fallout before it starts to grow properly again anyway. Still have the occasional jab of pain from the donor area as the skin heals, and you can see the operation marks, and I am really hoping that leaves no visible marks or scarring. @chipperhead do you have any scarring from the op?

Ironically my friends are saying I look great with the buzzcut, a bit like a prison break dude, but I really miss my hair and want it back asap... especially as Winter here will be -10 or worse.

Fingers crossed it all works out well. :)

Hope it goes well @Richdog

I posted it elsewhere but if you ever did fancy the super short hair cut you need to supplement it with a bit of facial hair that’s longer than the hair on your hair. I would always go for the clean shaven look on my face normally and it would just look a little odd with a buzz cut , but you want to go for the Stanley Tucci look on your face (google him) - you don’t have to go with a razor shaved head look, just a trim on zero with clippers and then a bit more hair on your face. Super neat.

Cheers for the tips chap. I have around 0.5-0.75cm and a couple of days stubble growth and that's as long as I want my facial hair to go! I will have to get my hair trimmed anyway as it is growing unevenly due to them doing a very close shave on the area they took the donor hairs from, so its shorter than the surrounding hair. :)

The good thing about having short hair is that it's really easy and painless to 'play around with it' - just try a few things about to see if they work.

He's @LiE rocking the master look, as per our posts when we last discussed this (which I just found) - #182

@LiE 's before and after is night and day. Looks so much better with the shaved head. Like a svelte Zangief  :D

I've just been to the barbers for my first cut since the op, I normally go for a skin fade but just went down to a 1 this time. I've got no scaring at all and you can't tell anything has been done to the back and sides so no evidence of over harvesting.
It's still slightly red on the donor area. I thought that I haven't had any shedding but realised when I run my fingers through my hair I could feel stubble, upon closer inspection I can see lots of hair maybe 2 or 3mm in length between all the longer hair.
I'm really pleased with the progress for 11 weeks.

Am I understanding it wrong. A hair transplant doesn’t stop you hair from falling out. Only the hair you have transplanted, if it takes, won’t fall out. If you are susceptible to hair loss you will still lose your remaining hair?
Yes that is generally correct, but my type of genetic hair loss is in a very specific place and primarily on my crown area. The rest of the hair will stay for a good while, same as with my fathers and grandfather.

Now I see how why it made sense to have it done early for you. Good luck in recovery.
Thanks mate. We are all subject to different genetic traits and me and my dad are so similar that I know how a lot of things will play out as I age. :D

Luckily, I look younger than my age and am in good shape so my hair was the only weak link that I wasn't happy with and wanted to sort out sooner rather than later. Lets see how it develops. :)
