We've just bought another, so make that 4. We've got two double Comfort 1000s, one double Comfort 1500, and one King 1500, so not the next level up. Very happy with all of them, obviously! Can only imagine the next range up are even better.

How long have you had them for.. I know they come with a decent warranty but seems some of the complaints are being passed off an normal settling....

Read 64 pages of this thread, a quick glance to save others the headache. Not an expert by any means and still looking to get a new mattress myself just bookmarked some top post and thoughts!
  • Overall lots of recommendations to avoid mattress in a box, perhaps too much money on marketing and the ones with foam may get too hot so stick with pocket sprung mattresses appears the general and better recommendation. This is not to say outright mattress in a box are bad many on here still loved their Emma mattresses and they do appear to favour side sleepers perhaps. They also have trials and money backs and in general good customer services.

  • Best and most popular recommendations company wise appear to be John Ryan, Sleepeezee, Premier Inn, Ikea, Sealy, Emma brands, mattressman, mattressonline, mynextmattress.co.uk

  • Most popular mattresses appear to be from John Ryan (Origins 1500, artisan naturals), Sleepeezee-Jessica-1800, Other Sleepeezee 1500+ pocket sprung models, Premier Inn, Emma, Sealy 1500+ pocket sprung models, Ikea mattresses around £129-200+

Anyone reading from start of this page might be confused by everyone talking about factory beds direct site since John Ryan website opens up instead its same site.

Lots of good single post people may wish to read ill mark it as hidden though

Nice review, very helpful. I've sadly been through a good many pages, nowhere near the lot though.

I think i've almost come to a conclusion on my choice/range. I was leaning to one of the Johnryan mattresses but i had a good scour on their site, and had a big of think about my current setup. The thing is, right now i'm sleeping on a forever old don't recall what or where purchased thing. I can literally see where the springs are as the fabric is sagging so much, but yet it's comfy enough. I'm light and do manual work and sport, plus i stretch daily. This is why i think it works okay. However my biggest issue with sleeping is heat, when cold i'm not massively bothered, but heat just makes my sleep really difficult. With all these supposedly good mattresses containing foam and dense filling, i just don't know how it's possible for heat to escape unless the materials are really good with transferring heat? Something with mostly natural materials i can only guess is best here. I'm definitely going for a standard solid wood bed, with nothing underneath to allow some airflow, and have my new setup in the centre of the room. Buy cheap buy twice. But why spend more than you need to? Why is this so difficult.

Glad you got some info, was just trying to save some headache since spent a good few hours reading it all.

To be fair, buying a mattress is not easy at all even with all this great info on this board even I am struggling.

Regarding your question though I do believe these modern mattresses or ones from last 5 or so years, the fabrics really do allow good heat transfer, I believe sleepeeze and others even do ones with Gel on top to take any heat away more. You can also improve mattresses from getting overly warm, swap to a summer duvet that is say 4.5 tog or less, I do this each year and also use a soft cotton mattress protector always, this seems to help me during those hot summers (my room gets 33c+).

Silk covers and silk pillow case covers may help get rid of heat, just not tried it though.

I still use my sealy millionaire memory mattress and its been fine, think it was over £300 many years ago from mattress man.

Having said all the above, I have since that last post, bought 3 different mattresses for another family member. One amazon mattress in a box, this one failed after 3 months since springs went funny and got uncomfortable, lucky got a refund from that since it was £100. 2nd was a sleepeeze mattress with 2000 pocket sprungs and top rated, this failed in 3 days, springs came misplaced also.

Then a sealy mattress, figured tried and tested right ? And went to test it and they appear to have left some plastic layer underneath the top cover.... so it sounds like you are sleeping on a giant walkers crisp packet, so that went back for a refund.

I think during covid, quality control has gone out the window not sure you can even spend £300-400 on a good mattress anymore since the amazon £100 mattress in the box did better then 2 x £350 mattresses.

I think it maybe better to go into a store, test it and then buy it, at least this is what I am advising my family member to now do, hopefully you have better luck.

After having my Emma Original for three years, I've now noticed a much softer spot in the middle of the bed (presumably because it's the area that takes the most weight from both my wife and I overnight) and it's started causing me some lower back pain as it's causing my back to twist between the firmer and softer areas.

Let's see what fun I have with the warranty...

Yes IMO.

You spend a lot of time in bed - in the grand scheme of things £400 extra isn’t too much :)

mum has the artisan naturals, it’s very different from my origins, all the support feels like it is the materials, you can’t really tell it has any springs. Whereas the cheaper ones definitely rely more on the springs for support. Guess that sounds obvious when I type it out, but it’s how I tend to describe the difference.

I imagine the difference between the artisan 1500 and naturals will be less than the origins to artisan.

If you’re used to regular mattresses, I’d say get the artisan 1500 and pocket the difference. If you are particular about mattresses and want the best then the naturals would probably be worth it.

Thanks for the replies, my current mattress was purchased from factory beds direct about 10 years ago. It's the origins 1500 (or equivalent of).
I think I'm tempted by the naturals then. I got my moneys worth out of the last one and the naturals has a 10 year guarantee.

I've had my mattress on order quite some time but only managed to try it this month and I look forward to getting in it each night.

I only wanted to spend on a mattress but ended up thinking I can't put asda cardboard sheets on an expensive mattress so went all out and it's definitely worth it. I was dreading I'd looked forward to it too long and had too high expectations and it was going to be meh but you can feel the difference. I ordered towels at the same time and the shower bed combo feels luxurious highly recommend this combo

Do you use both a mattress topper and protector together?

Imagine you'd need enormous bedsheets to go over them plus the thickness of the JR mattress.

This is my issue. I just can't bare throwing down the cash for something good and getting a "yeah, it's okay, it does the job" at the end of it. If you've had pricey and cheap mattresses in the past then you know what to expect. Think i might opt for a bed of straw at this rate as i've literally given up looking currently.

However, i am very keen on getting a down duvet or two. Via the duvet link you provided, the company has a video on that page, she says "thermally heated", erm what?

I do. The sheets are pretty good they go over the lot okay. I'm not sure if they're 35 or 40 but I would buy 40 as the mattress is 30cm + covers and the topper is 4cm and maybe 1cm for the protector

I had one when they were duvetandpillowco and it regulated my temperature well but I left it at my ex's not thinking how much they cost now.. I paid more for a 4.5 tog than I did for a 9 back then but it's like a cloud on me lol

I’m looking at the JR range but the main thing I’m looking at in a mattress is keeping me cool! My current mattress feels like it’s filled with lava, has side heaters and some of them heat lamps overhead that they use in restaurants to keep your food warm, so I’m looking for the complete opposite and something that keeps me cool in bed.

I’m not totally sure what my current mattress is to be honest but I got it from Dreams and it has a sewn in topper which I assume is the culprit!

Any advice on a cool mattress appreciated thanks.

wool is natural and meant to be cool in summer and warm in winter. I picked the devon duvets topper for that reason

I’ve started getting Back ache again on my JR mattress which is concerning me, it’s noticeable where me and my other half sleep even with flipping the mattress, it’s comfy no question but I’ve got a bad back and it’s probably not firm enough for me, any recommendations on a firmer topper?

After a few weeks of back and forth with the EMMA CS team, they've finally agreed to replace my mattress under warranty and the replacement is arriving tomorrow. So far not a bad experience with them :)
