Mattresses - I need knowledge

Any heavy folk 20st minimum recommend a single mattress (No room for a double).

After a new one, current one got quite dip in middle and old enough to hear the springs scraping the top of the 1inch mdf bed base that is storage as well, padded top part above mattress so not getting poked by springs........ yet

I bought a John Ryan mattress about 6+ years ago, there's probably an OG post from me in this thread actually enquiring about them. It was nice but not worth the creaming and loyalty that people give them on here, imo.

I completely understand everyone is different and mattresses are a personal choice depending on many factors, but it just felt like any other half decent quality mattress I'd used before. In the end I ended up having to sell it as I left the country but for those 2-3 years of ownership it was "fine". At the time I think i'd probably thought it was amazing but was fooling myself a bit due to how much they cost, but over the years since, i've slept on some really comfortable and supportive mattresses which have turned out to be pretty bog standard. So in my case, it's definitely not been a case of spend more, get better.

I'll be in the market for a king bed in the next 12 months so i'm going to have to buck up on my mattress knowledge and see whats out there.

I recently bought my first house and got a King size bed, I got the frame from Get Laid Beds and a JR Origins 1500 mattress. Only 2 weeks in but so far so good, huge improvement in comfort for me and I'm getting to sleep faster (I'm not a great sleeper). Unsure of brand etc of previous mattress but it wasn't in top shape so no doubt any mattress would have been an improvement but this does feel excellent. I'll update at a later date as early impressions aren't worth all that much.

So in my case, it's definitely not been a case of spend more, get better.

But their ideas are not spend more to get better, it's spend less then everyone else for a better build quality, so a £500 mattress from JR would be an £800 mattress from some other brand, that is how they have always positioned themselves. Also less marketing bull poo and more honesty in what is inside your mattress.

Yes that's what you are buying into, well that's their sales pitch. To be fair it's hard to find bad reviews, but on the other hand there are no professional reviews out their either. Absolute minefield.

You only need to watch some of their older videos where they saw a mattresses in half to show you what utter crap is put in some of them. I'll see if I can find some examples to link.

And there are a lot of mattress manufacturers that don't put crap inside them too. It's easy to show a real bad example to prove that point.

As above poster said, it is a bit of a minefield!

For what it's worth I like our JR mattresses. The oldest are 6 years old now and still going well. I got a superking for about half price in their recent sale.
I think in some ways a mattress is like a desk/task chair - the very best ones, are not necessarily soft and "comfortable" - but they are unnoticeable if you're sitting for a long period of time.

Thanks for passing that one, I've just ordered a John Ryan however it won't be here for a few weeks.

Has anyone tried the Brook + Wilde elite mattress? I currently have a 45% voucher code from Vodaphone which makes it seem very appealing.

That is just a standard discount code that they have on all of the time, even magazines like T3 clam to have 'negotiated' this offer but they actually get paid for every mattress sold using the link/code. It's a great scam to dupe consumers into think they are getting a bargain.

Another example code DM50 takes 50% off the £1299 mattress, that code is from, you guessed it, the Daily Fail.

Urgh that’s annoying. Also guessing the reviews are paid reviews too

Had my 4th night on my JR Origins Comfort 1000, woke up with what felt i'd pulled my lower back. I know the feeling well from riding, i stretch once of twice a day and do a manual a job too, so shouldn't be getting that. The mattress as a few posts above states is "fine" for £600. I'm tall, light and a side sleeper, they advised me this was the right mattress, personally i just picked the cheapest one :P
To be fair the mattress is decent quality, feels nice, i fall asleep quickly and seems to regulate temperature well.
I'm thinking i might just get myself a cheapo soft thing, again with an exchange offer, given i previous was sleeping on a 10yr old cheapo thing it can't be that bad?!

The problem is, living in a new house, new duvet, covers, it's hard to pinpoint what's what. I woke up a few times last night also, i just dunno. Gonna give it a few more nights.

Anyone familiar with John Ryan products who can give a view please? What sort of step is there from Origins Pocket 1500 up to Artisan 1500, and from there to the Artisan Naturals - is the latter worth double the cost of the Origins Pocket 1500? Currently have an Eve Original which is not awful but equally it is nothing to write home about.

I emailed JR asking about their short warranties as i'm still on the fence about mine, i got what i thought was an oddly worded response.
The warranties are provided by the manufacturer and the time they are willing to accept them back with faults.

We expect all our mattresses to last much longer than any of their warranties as they are fully tunable mattresses, you in effect have 2 full sleep surfaces to use, and regular turning over of your mattress will make it last much longer

I thought they had their own inhouse manufacturing? Or at least that was the impression i got given their wording on the website.

That's a really weird response. The 3 years warranty is only on their cheapest beds right? Then it jumps to 10 years I think for the next model up. If you ask them let me know please.

In reality a warranty doesn't mean jack, the consumer rights act trump's it and that states something should last for a reasonable amount of time which of course is subjective. Big companies don't want to waste time (money) if you challenge them on this so generally you can get your own way as long as you're reasonable.
