What film did you watch last night?

Sketch - I'd give a 4/10 its a decent idea just executed pretty poorly for both a family film and a horror film, needs to pick a lane. Could be a great happy family film or an incredible dark horror.

Was going to watch The Batman that i recorded the other day but my VM box decided to green screen. Luckily i did not have much recorded and got a engineer booked for Friday.

Have seen the movie before and didn't think much of it but wanted to see if a second viewing improved it.

The Vast of Night (2019)

Sci-fi mystery where a radio DJ and a switchboard operator in 1950s New Mexico discover a mysterious, otherworldly audio frequency on the radio, leading them on a hunt for UFOs.

Re-watched, still 8/10

I love this film for its story telling, pacing and atmosphere - but it doesn't poll well with audiences - like a lot of the films I watch!

'One battle after another' it's good. i like Leo Dicaprio in most films he's done, but the film is an exercise in not losing track, or getting bored and wishing for a bit more action

i have an idea that altho the filming was done some time ago, it's something of a metaphor for the current administration's use of ICE

One Battle after Another - 6/10

Tbf, it could (should) have been half the length and it would have been a better film. The long drawn out style didn't bring anything imo. Though it held our attention enough to see it through, it was verging on tedious at times. The performances and general calibre of the film rescued it though.

The only film I've ever seen that even made a car chase feel slow!

The Long Walk - 7/10

Not having read the book, I quite enjoyed this film adaptation. Strange concept to begin with, but if you go with the premise then it worked well. Keep meaning to check how the book ended differently.

E: Just checked, think I'd prefer the book ending

Frequency - 6/10

I enjoy time travel films and hadn't heard of this one before seeing it recommended in the TT thread recently.

I suppose I prefer when they get into the nuts and bolts of the TT, whereas this glossed over all that and it was just the vehicle for what turned out to be a run of the mill thriller type film, with lashings of Hollywood sentimentality dolloped on top.

American Graffiti (1973)

Never seen it. Bit of a weird movie in a way, it kinda doesn't have any real direction or seem to go anywhere whilst remaining quite entertaining throughout.

I barely recognised Harrison Ford in it, and Richard Dreyfuss looked so much younger than he did in Jaws despite only being 2 years prior.

Cool movie though, great cars, music and of course Wolfman Jack who I am familiar with from watching old episodes of Midnight Special.

7/10

Such a long time since i watched it, as you say it's an odd one but a classic in my opinion.

I don't remember much of the Arnie version to remember how that ended, but i fear you might be similarly disappointed like me!

yeah I was.. I gave it a 6/10 in the Running Man thread.. mostly enjoyed it, but the last 1/4 was too rushed / didn't fit with the rest of the movie.. and as for the ending.. bah!!.. as I said in that thread.. i'm guessing they are setting up for a Running man 2..

Yeah, saw your post over there just after i replied to this one!

Lord of Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring Extended edition (2001) - on Wednesday night, 10/10 obviously! I try and get all three watched before Christmas each year, but don't think I will make it this time.

A Real Pain (2024) - last night, good film but would not watch again, 7/10.

Back to the Future - Did i enjoy it, not as much as i used to. its not the best of the bunch for me, 3 tops the list, big gulf to 1 and then 2 which was trying too hard to do something and the whole crispin glover thing ruined it. But 1 is fine i guess, 6 / 10

American Beauty (1999)

Never seen it. I didn't know what to expect either other than had reasonably good ratings.

Again bit of a weird movie, I didn't dislike it, but I'm not really sure what it was trying to achieve, maybe nothing? Maybe I missed it?

6/10
