Are quads 'realy' that hot?

I have a B3 quad with TT @3.2 and hits 70 when loaded, i've looked at other results and this seems about normal.

Thing is, all the other things in my pc that get hot, feel hot.
Gfx card shows 70 deg, it feels very hot to touch.
The nothbridge passive cooler gets hot and when my old 3800x2 hit 50 deg, it was hot to touch and would blow out very warm air.

Now, 70 deg (TAT and core temp) my TT just gets a little bit warm.
I've lapped the cpu and TT, added washers to the screws and applied the arctic silver the correct way as per the website, this reduced my temps a few degs and balanced out the temp across the cores at load.
I've also removed the base of the TT from the heat pipes, cleaned of the ruff stuff that didn't cover the length of the pipes (think it was some sort of solder), cleaned it all with sand paper, applied some arctic silver and put it all back together.
Same temps, well maybe 1 deg less but that could have been just the re-seat.

So anyway, i have a thermal probe on the north bridge which reads 44 under load, which feels about right and the base of the TT reads 40+, it just feels warm as if it not making a good contact with the IHS.

These chips ars supposed to throttle at 85, but has anyone actually had one do it, and at what temp in core temp?
It just dosn't feel like the base is conducting that much heat.

The temp is coming from inside the CPU core which is why your heatsink doesn't feel 70c. If you heatsink was 70c then I'm assuming that CPU would have to be on fire :) 70c is fine though under load for an overclocked B3 Quad.

Ive just finished setting up my Quad rig. Im impressed with the temps.

I've got a Quad E6600 G0 stepping running at 3ghz, idle temps are currently 37-39c.

How long would i need to run prime to get load temps?

I did a lot of testing after I found my Tuniq Tower was only a little warm when running an overclocked E2180 yet it is definately fitted properly with just the right amount of thermal compound etc. I've even tested with the TT just sitting on the CPU and after running TAT, CoreTemp etc I took the TT off the CPU to let it heat up and hit it's throttle point which it did at ~85c. When I sat the TT back on the CPU the temps dropped back to normal again so it's doing it's job although I did expect it to be more efficient than it is.

I also tried it with Orthos running (bad idea as temps shot up very quickly) and around 2 seconds after it hit it's throttle point it switched itself off. :)

Screenshot showing thermal throttling (TM2) in action:

The delta between idle and load core temps is ~25c which isn't overly excessive but I was hoping it'd be better. I doubt one of the even newer coolers (such as the Ultra-120 Extreme) would do much better so I suspect it's down to the contact between the cores and the IHS not being very good.

STR, if your t-junction is 85 in core temp, and it throttled at 85 deg, does this mean then that a B3 will throtle at 100?
Is the IHS soldered on the B3's, there are some pics of some E2xxx with TIM under the IHS.

What does CoreTemp 0.94.5 say your B3 Tjunction is? If it says 85c it's more than likely correct although the way programs like CoreTemp are reading Tjunction isn't 100% foolproof due to Intel not providing a guarenteed means to read the CPU's TjunctionMax.

Have you got any links to the E2xxx with TIM under the IHS as I'm tempted to remove the IHS on my E2180 or E2160 to do some further testing.

Core temp says Tjunction 100c, i will try to find the link for you.

Sorry, it's the E4300's, just google for e4300 IHS removed.

Edit:- just looked again and it says the E4xxx and the E2xxx have thermal paste on them.

A few minutes using small FFT's should be ok, though they will increase a little after a while.

Yep so then it'll be 100c before thermal throttling will kick in.

I had a look at that page showing the E4300 IHS removal. I haven't got any razors like they used and not sure where I'd get one. It looks like it's the only thing that'll get under the IHS though so will need to try find one.

I'll try it on my E2160 L2 rather than the E2180 M0 as I suspect the E2180 probably is soldered on especially as I suspect Intel have improved something with the M0 and it could well be they have started to solder them on.

My Q6600 GO stepping with Freezer 7 Pro clocked @ 3GHz running BOINC

with all 4 cores loaded @ 100% 24/7 rarely goes over 65C core temp even on a hot day!

Peter can you do a screenshot of that BOINC load test (make sure to use CoreTemp 0.95.4) but also run CPU-Z 1.41 and the Everest beta to see all the sensor details it provides. I'm interested in seeing all the temps and how they correlate with each other.

I'll have a go but not sure I know how to!

Have downloaded latest CPU-Z & everest.

CPU-Z is F6 to save to clipboard.

If you want a screen shot of the sensor page in everest how do I do that?

What screen shot of Coretemp 0.95? and how to do that?

Whats the best way to collect them all together and post them here?

Its getting late so I'm of to bed, will give it a try tomorrow PM if you can give me a clue!

With all those program running and visible on the desktop you need to press the print screen key which should be at the top right of your keyboard near F12 and Pause.

Next you need to run the Paint program so click the Start button then All Programs then Accessories and finally Paint.

Next you press Ctrl-V or use the Edit menu in Paint to paste the screenshot.

Next you use the File menu to save it and make sure to choose JPEG in the Save as type box so it saves it as a jpeg file. It's probably best to save it in your Pictures folder.

Next open ImageShack in your web browser and click the "Browse" button and find the screenshot jpeg file you saved in your Pictures folder then click the "Open" button.

Finally click the "host it!" button and it'll upload the jpeg file to ImageShack and provide you with boxes containing links for you to copy and paste into the forum reply box.

The "Thumbnail for forums (1)" box is the one you want to copy and paste into the forum reply box so click it to make it turn blue and press the right mouse button and choose "Copy" then on here in a reply box click the right mouse button and choose "Paste" and you're done!

Thank's str, i never knew how to post screen shots:)
Time to see if mine throttles i think.

If i don't post back, it's dead.
