Custom Arcade / Fight Sticks

Here's a little sneak peak of my custom build:

My first time soldering:

Tidied up, made short-proof and connected to my wiring loom:

Although it now goes: LT RT LB RB Back Guide Start A B X Y Ground

I'll do a full write-up once my Sanwa parts arrive but everything on the electronics front is working perfectly.

Much <3 to chrismox for his help and generosity :)

I plan to do the mod to allow my stick to work on 360 and PS3 in a month or two, pretty sure I spotted a guide on SRK earlier. I'd love to be able to use the stick on 360 as it would be a lot cheaper than buying another stick. (which would also have inferior parts)

Ouch, MUCH easier modding the 360 version to work on a PS3. Let me know if you need any help (and to repay me you can school my ass at SFIV 360).

Not a fan of the grey though, ordered 8 OBSF vermilion and a vermilion jlf for my SE :)

I was going full red but ended up going for something to blend in a bit more, I haven't looked into how complicated modding the stick to work on 360 is but I'll find that out when I get some more moolah. :p

You need to "padhack" a pad, like in my pics above. For the 360 -> PS3 you use a ready made Cthulu board.

Hmm should be okay, but I will worry about that at a later time, at the moment I have a slight crisis, I swear my jab button is playing up.

It seems to respond most of the time, I mean a jab will sometimes not come out yet the button always seems to work for special attacks and not ultras, but that would be a case of luck and I think the button is just not responding at times.

Gonna open it up and pop the button out then back in just to make sure nothing has came loose or been knocked out of place every so slightly. :o

I noticed this yesterday too but it went away until earlier today, I'd say roughly 75% of jabs come out but I can't really rely on that and I've missed a lot of ultras because of it probably.

A common problem with the SE's, see if the problem goes away when you switch to sanwa buttons, otherwise it's likely to be a soldering/PCB issue.

Just swapped the 2 black buttons that never get used, testing it now.

The quick disconnects have taken skin off my fingers, some of them were ridiculous and wouldn't come off without the use of pliers.

Edit: ROFL, I just went into training mode with the buttons now swapped and Balrog is jabbing at LIGHTNING speed, it is now perfect and now at least I am 100% sure the button was indeed playing up. So that is why I was getting so many Supers coming out instead of Ultras in training as Balrog.

It could have been a loose connector but oh well, swapped them anyway no harm done, well actually I broke one of the default white buttons (one that doesn't get used), basically it twists around instead of remaining stable when sat inside the button slot, it actually works but it twists if you...twist it where as the other buttons remain still.

The old button I had for jab does feel slightly different to the others, it has a bit more weight to it when pressed where as the others respond much snappier.

Oh dear... perhaps we should discourage you from using a soldering iron :p

Wasn't my fault I was gentle, I wish the quick disconnects were gentler with me though my hands are rough as hell. :p

I can not believe this jab thing though, a lot of times I have wondered where my ultra was when it didn't come out and now I reckon I know why. :o

It didn't happen too often though so I just figured it was the game not allowing you to spam jab so much, bah.

Balrog has never jabbed faster, button feels nicer to play with as well!

Here's a little sneak peak of my custom build...

Nice work, glad the resistors seem to have gone on well.

Mine are finished and all seems well! I may need to see if I can use X-Padder to make the D-pad act as X & Y axes to avoid confusion in some games. Other than that, they work perfectly. I'll post some pics later...

Nice sticks there chrismox. There is a picture of one in Nike shoebox on Kotaku, although it looks a bit flimsy. I've bought a custom built stick that is meant to have Sanwa Joystick and Buttons. Will I be able to check that they are genuine by looking at the model number on each button?

If you mean the LS, DP, RS option switch then that's typically not used in custom sticks as it requires a lot of effort for no real reason.

By side buttons do you mean the 7th and 8th face buttons?

...Will I be able to check that they are genuine by looking at the model number on each button?

I'd think that you can just check them against a picture of them on Google images. Not sure about a serial number.

Did you add the extra side buttons and the switch that the Madcatz sticks have (to switch the joystick between the pad and sticks and to put the extra buttons on the side of the stick?) hard to tell from that picture.rp2000

The type of Mad Catz I used (see pic in previous post) doesn't have a switch for the X-axis / D-pad as they were separate on the original stick. I could have made this and, subsequently, I wish I had for compatibility with certain emulators which don't easily recognise the D-pad. Maybe a future modification...?

As for buttons, the ones you can see are all I have wired up, being:
A
B
X
Y
LB
RB
Select
Start
Xbox guide

The other 4 buttons, including the triggers set as digital rather than analogue buttons are wired up internally in case I decide to swap things around. There doesn't seem any real need to have more face buttons than I've currently got.
