Apple Worldwide Developers Conference to Kick Off with Keynote Address on Monday, June 8

CUPERTINO, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® will kick off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 8 at 10:00 a.m. A team of Apple executives, led by Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the keynote. WWDC will offer in-depth sessions on both iPhone™ OS 3.0, the world's most advanced mobile operating system, and Mac OS® X Snow Leopard™, an even more powerful and refined version of the world's best desktop operating system and the foundation for future Mac® innovation.

"Last June, we gave developers an early look at the powerful new technologies that form the underpinnings of Mac OS X Snow Leopard," said Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "At WWDC, we will be giving our developers a final Developer Preview release so they can see the incredible progress we've made on Snow Leopard and work with us as we move toward its final release."

Snow Leopard and Mac technical sessions will showcase hundreds of refinements to the operating system and dive deep into its new technologies including a 64-bit architecture, QuickTime® X, next-generation multicore and GPU processor support, and amazing new accessibility technologies. iPhone OS 3.0 technical sessions will cover introductory and advanced concepts to help developers get the most out of the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK and over 1,000 new APIs available for iPhone OS 3.0.

WWDC also offers attendees the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with Apple engineers to solve code-level issues, gain insight into development techniques and get expert advice on interface design.

Other activities at Apple's WWDC 2009 include:
· more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers on a wide range of technology-specific topics for developing, deploying and integrating iPhone OS 3.0 and Mac OS X technologies;
· over 1,000 Apple engineers presenting the latest in Apple technologies and providing one-to-one direction in hands-on labs; and
· the opportunity to connect with thousands of fellow iPhone and Mac developers from around the world.

Some Snow Leopard features rumoured/announced:

Support for connecting to Microsoft Exchange 2007 servers will be included in Mail, Address Book, and iCal.
A smaller hard drive and RAM footprint and faster installation times, under 15 minutes versus over an hour for Mac OS X v10.5.

Support for up to a theoretical 16 terabytes of RAM by further developing 64-bit kernel technologies.

Grand Central - A parallel-programming technology that aims to take greater advantage of modern multi-core CPUs, included in all current Macs.

QuickTime X - Which will feature optimized support for modern codecs.

OpenCL - Same as Nvidia CUDA or Microsoft Computing Shaders will allow developers to more easily code applications to take advantage of the GPU for non-graphics computing purposes.

A 64-bit kernel which provides a complete 64-bit environment for applications, along with 32-bit support for older Macs. This completes a long-running attempt by Apple to completely unify their products in 64-bit capabilities, dating back to Apple's original adoption of the PowerPC in 1994, which anticipated 64-bit CPUs using the same architecture. With the PowerPC G5 Apple incrementally built 64-bit support into OS X starting with Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" in 2003.

Stacks - Will receive an update, allowing users to drill-down into the contents of subfolders within the stacks interface.

The first time I'll be watching this on the right side of the fence. :) Looking forward to some new features in Snow Leopard.

More iPhone stuff *yawn* Yes the iPhone is one of, if not the best smart phone on the market but Apple are a computer company that seem to have forgotten they are a computer company. Make some new and exiting computer products damn it.

I am, however, looking forward to Snow Leopard.

I can see Apple also bringing out an eBook reader of some description.. along with creating an eBook portal through iTunes.

Apple themselves (or should I say Steve Jobs) are actually attempting to become a media company. In short by creating a computing platform, then with Pixar etc creating media content (especially as they're getting more hooked into Disney etc)... it's only a matter of time before Jobs can make a movie from top to bottom via Apple.
The platforms will then move out to cover effects etc.

Snow leopard technology is a basis that they can use the parallel processing performance (OpenCL/GPGPU) to increase the performance of render farms for Pixar etc.

The iPhone/pod is a mechanism to get a distribution system into everyone's pocket.

As a bigger picture (ie outside of just writing an operating system/computer) I think Apple far exceed Microsoft in terms of vision now that they've achieved the "microsoft in every office and home" (in a large degree).
To me this shows something more than the standard business management and shows a will and a drive to achieve something bigger - Branson has this, Jobs has this but Bulmer doesn't.

Well when the iphone is about 40% of their sales.......

I love the iPhone (I've had two!) but I was an Apple user at the time of the Classic and I love Apple computers more than the iPod/iPhone range. I feel they risk losing the market they have gained by neglecting the computer line up. Look at the iMac the design has been the same since the imac G5!

I agree with this 100%. Jobs is a complete arse to work for, an ego manic, a control freak but he has a vision and has done everything he can to make it work and it does seem to be working.

I was considering getting a new iMac, until I remember this was on, thinking i'll wait just to see what/if gets announced.

I'd say it's 100% that we'll get release of iPhone OS 3. Rest of it is all mindless rumors at the moment, I'd like to see something totally revolutionary and new though...

The lack of interest in their computer lineup is annoying. We all know the iPhone has been their little baby since it has been launched and you get the impression that everything has taken a backseat to that for quite a while now.

I don't think there's a lot they can do with the iMac in terms of designs - that's why the most radical change has been changing the materials and cosmetics of it. It sort of needs to be a laptop with a screen on a stand to be what they want it to be.

They tried to be radical with the MacBook Air but I imagine interest has been very low there. At least in the vast majority of users who want big specs and not a playtoy to bring to a lunch meeting, with an agent in California.

The wait for a new and exciting product has been far longer than usual but the tablet promises to be that product. Although I was sure it would be announced in this WWDC, I'm not so sure now. Maybe an announcement with a far out date for production.

Not entirely sure I agree.

I've seen a few women interested in MacBook Air - due to the size and fashionability.. I know a board level guy who uses one but for him it's because it fit into his bag and all he does is email along with outline documents/memos (his team does the rest).

Apple are, as everyone is, aware of the financial slow down. It makes sense to delay as required simply because the base that is looking to purchase is going to delay buying..

I don't doubt that people have bought a MacBook Air - what I am saying is that I imagine it hasn't been quite the hit that Apple expected it to be. You said it in as much as the word 'fashion ability'. Personally I believe that's all it really is for now.

I think it's a vision of what to expect in the future. But then laptops will have much beefier specs crammed into a similar sized space. For now it's very underpowered or an extremely expensive e-mail/browsing machine - with butchered options in terms of ports.

Oooh I'm getting a tingling sensation down below already!

Bring it on....!

Calm you down. :p

My excitement levels are starting to rise but I cannot help thinking I will be disappointed.

I don't doubt that people have bought a MacBook Air... extremely expensive e-mail/browsing machine - with butchered options in terms of ports.

It looks great but why in the name of the Goddess does it only have one USB port and that's about it (apart from MiniDisplay port they added on the facelift)?

I bet that was Jobs and his Reality Distortion Field. More power and more ports and it would be a great laptop...

I thought the idea of the Air was for it to be more portable. So the target audience won't have many devices to plug into the USB ports if they're concerned about portability.

It would be a Macbook. The Macbook Air's form factor was awesome at the time but it's really not a good computer.

They should try the following.

Move the 13.3 inch into the Pro lineup. Keeping the size but adding the ports of a Pro machine.
Aluminium shells are now all Pro only. This may already be happening.

The plastic Macbook now becomes the midrange machine in the Macbook lineup.
Add an 11" Macbook Plastic and a 15" Macbook Plastic.

There's your Mac netbook. And there's your 15" laptop under $2000.
A redesign of the poly case would be in order.

yashiro, that would be far too cluttered.

The white MacBook is only available because the Unibody MacBook won't be able to come down in price for a while. As soon as they can cut the cost of that down to what a normal MacBook is, then the white one will say goodbye.

As it is for now, The Unibody MacBook is a bit more expensive and when you get to consider that price, a lot of people will add the £100/£200 more and go for a MacBook Pro. It's the perfect temporary lineup for them at the moment whilst they adjust.

The MacBook Air does sort of step on the toes of the MacBook, now that the latter has gone to Aluminum. I can see the MacBook Air going away in a few years with the MacBooks taking on that same sleekness and thinness.

It made sense for Apple to test out the Aluminum manufacturing process (from a single block of metal) on a new and expensive (i.e less bought) product like the MacBook Air. Rather than risk it on what I believe is the best selling Mac Product.

No surprise that the success of the MBA (albeit in far smaller numbers of sales) meant that the MacBooks and MacBook Pros both decided to take on the same process a year after. Even though the MacBooks strayed away from any metal previously.

I think that Snow Leopard will be free or very low cost. Wonder if they'll announce it at WWDC D:

I don't actually like the design of the Air. The dimensions are impressive, but the heavily curved base looks daft and the bezel doesn't look as good as current MacBooks.
