AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

AM3 chips only support 1333 mhz natively, anything over that will depend on the strength of the imc on the chip itself. So for overclocking you're best to keep memory at 1333mhz and try to get lower latencies. This way there is less strain on the imc, meaning you can push the core clock higher, and also you can achieve lower latencies - which i hear these chips favour.

well when i up the ram voltage it become a lot more stable at 1600, so tbh i don't see how it can be the IMC.

for explain, 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 2t 1.7v (stock voltage) fails in seconds, 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 2t 1.75v fails in 4-5hours, 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 2t 1.8v fails in 6-7hours.

hmm you're right that is strange. Perhaps for some strange reason theres some vdroop to the ram, so when you supply 1.8 you're actually supplying 1.7? seems very unlikely to be honest, but maybe its possible. Well if thats the case then does sound like the RAM isn't quite up to the spec advertised.

james - is that whilst you have your CPU overclocked or not?
Mine works fine with CPU at stock aswell - but as soon as I OC it - the IMc can't handle it without relaxing settings on RAM.

currently running mine @ DDR1500 9-9-24-2T (yep I know crap timings but its all the RAM supports)

gareth did you get your new board?

James i was having problems getting my 955 stable at 3.6 i upped the vcore to 1.4 and left everything else on stock like you but after 2hrs prime it restarted, im interested to see how you get on with yours at 1.33v have you ajusted the cpu-nb freq?

Just a quick question to anyone that can help if you up the cpu-nb freq do you need to up the cpu-nb voltage to? im looking to up the freq to 2200 so was not to sure if the voltage qould need ajusting, i understand by default it 1.1v correct me if im wrong tho

thanks a mill

This is what Ive managed to get on my new 955, its stable but I have a few questions, whats AMD's voltage limit on these chips I'm guessing 1.4 is alright? and another thing since this is my first cpu with an unlocked multi do you overclock with that before you touch the fsb or the other way around or abit of both ive done the overclock above by doing abit of both and this is as high as i can get it with that voltage.

Thanks
