AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

this is weird, i just updateed the gpu driver, and now the "core temp" is lower than the cpu temp, it's never done that before... lol

so just goes to show you should be monitoring the "cpu temp", as the core temp is software generated.

anyway i just tryed 4ghz 1.55v again, the temp was at 45c under 3DMark06 so maybe tomorrow i'll run prime if it'll still cool...

Hey AMD guys!

I'm looking at getting a 955 or 965 along with a new board and RAM. Will my Noctua NH-U12F be able to take it to a decent OC? What would you recommend to get to 3.8?

Nevermind..
My 5850 is performing pretty much exactly the same as my 5870.. Basically.. The driver maturing has made the 5850 as good as the 5870 was at launch, at least in regards to 3dmark06.

im trying to test my system with my 955 and 5850 with 3dmark 06 but it keeps crashing after the 2nd graphics test my screen just goes blank have no idea why, i have nothing overclocked either

I still have no clue as to how to overclock my CPU (955BE) and my 5850
where should i start?
i am thinking of not doing anything until my Artic5 or what ever it is gets here - temps at the moment can hit 63c :(
might be due to standard compound that came with CPU cooler and i am adding a second side case fan as well to try and help keep things cooler

Hi kellaway225 :) . . . did you see post #1289 . . . don't worry about overclocking your graphics card right now, keep life simple and just work on the main system overclock . . . . how much of this thread have you read btw?

Can someone tell me why i should be overclocking the NB?...

At the minute i've got it @1.3vlts @2400mhz ( i Have had it stable @2600), but i really cant see any benefit in terms of performance in any of the stuff i use...this is in combination of a Phenom II 550 unlocked to a Tri Core @3.7Ghz with 1.44vlts.

All it seems to be doing is raising the temps...with no discernible benefit..

Is overclocking the NB just useful in certain things?......is an overclocked CPU less stable without a corresponding increase in NB speed?...

Back when I had a 5870/940. Prime 95 with furmark brought my systems to its knees.

But Prime with furmark this time around is working fine together...
The point of this exercise is to stress it as much as I phsyically can.

To Cooper.

I keep my NB/HTT the same, which at the moment is 2700MHZ. I keep them within 1400MHZ of my core clock, at the moment, this is 4050MHZ.
My reasoning for this? It seems to 1.) Be smoother, while there isn't a benchmark, results to show this.. It's more of a perceptional gain..
2.) I used to run IBT maximum a lot.. The way I see it, the higher the range in Gflops, the greater the chance of instability as it's not consistent..

Before I started this crazy furmark/prime run, I think my Gflop range was 0.3/0.4 or something.. I.E, next to nothing.. Ranges of 1+ seem to signify instability, when you go for a long stress test like a 12 hour blend.

Just tried mine at 3.6ghz with no luck just got back in and my computer has restarted and showing as recovering from an error :(, it had been running for 2hrs before i went out to, there is know way to find out what caused the error to, i had it set 18x multiplier, vcore 1.4v cpu-nb multiplier to 11x which was 2.2ghz, the only thing i didnt change was the cpu-nb voltage and the HT not having much luck here any ideas guys?

Right, so i've gone back to my overclock again now i've got my new cooler :D

The system specification is as follows:

Asus M3NHT-Deluxe Motherboard (AM2+ 780a chipset)
Phenom 2 X4 945 AM3 (95w) (3ghz stock)
8gb OCZ Platinum PC6400
OCZ 600w PSU
Titan Fenrir CPU Cooler

I think they are the few bits that matter to this thread :)

Right ok now i've installed my new Fenrir i'm going try to push this further. I decided to leave this running Prime95 earlier for approx 8 hours and i've had no issues so far. I've decided to drop the HT-link to just under 2000 for the time being and keeping my RAM at approx stock (400mhz) oh also the CPU is running at stock 1.34 volts

The temps are very pleasing and i'm definitely going to push for the 4ghz mark although I think my RAM might restrict me :(

Anyway here is a screenshot so far, unfortunately I closed Prime95 down earlier but it is the same session of coretemp so the max temp you see is what was attained from the 8 hour Prime95 session.

I'll keep you all posted on this :)

edit: I've just noticed in the screenshot that the ASUS utility is listing my current CPU temp higher than coretemp so i'm not sure which one to believe....

Hello jv2907 and welcome to the thread, please read the "Welcome Post" and preferably the whole thread before you start . . . if after that you have some questions or something you don't understand then please ask away! . . . . btw your sig is awesome but sadly it's 90% too tall under current forum rules (400 x 75 pixels) :D

Cooper: As has already been stated there are performance gains to be had from overclocking the CPU-NB but it's probably worth concentrating on your main CPU clock first, get some priming done and then when your happy everything is hunky dory then you can begin working on the CPU-NB overclocking . . . . have you posted up any Stability screenies yet? :)

Fonz-Valo: Nice to see you back and looks like you got a bit more clocking to do! :p . . . is it possible in your future screenies to edit the size down a bit by clumping the technical windows closer together and chopping out excessive desktop! :D . . . . 3.8GHz CPU and 2.6GHz CPU-NB would be tasty!

no problem will do, I use the firefox styles ocuk theme so I don't see the pics so big, so erm... yeah I'll sort that for the future

I think I can get 3.8ghz quite easily I did have it previously on my AC64 but the temps were way too high to use it and prime it more than a couple of hours :(
