AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

liamcrane - you've just made me realise that my poor old CPU-NB has been at 1.3v and 2400MHz for 5 days. Bit of an accident, and it hasn't overheated or gone pop yet, but I think I'll bring that down to a more comfortable 2000MHz and 1.15v. I'll let you know how it goes :)

Is the stock voltage of everyones IMC 1.175v ? . . . On two AII chips I've tested the IMC can run up to 2.5GHz using this standard voltage but much over that requires a little bump to CPU-NB voltage . . . has anyone done any "isolated" CPU-NB testing to see how the voltage scales? . . . I'm still not sure if the Denebs Level 3 cache gets powered by vCore or CPU-NB voltage? (or a bit of both?) :D

it's seem to be my ram that making the issues. at 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 2t 1.75v, prime fails..

at 1333mhz 6-6-6-20 1t 1.75v, prime runs fine for 9hours+.

it either could be the IMC or ram. im more thinking its the ram.

now im trying 1333mhz 6-6-6-15 1t 1.75v

Ah, cheers for that gareth, good to know I hadn't inadvertently set it to self destruct levels :>

However, 2 hours prime blend at 1.15v so far... really can't find a reason that it needs to be high, especially when on only 2000MHz. I'm not really sure how much of a bottleneck that NB speed is, or whether it's worth pushing for 2400 again :S

Gareth: Yeah I meant the "Stock" CPU-NB voltage! :) . . . 1.1v you say? . . . very nice! :D . . . what I was saying is . . has anybody done ani "isolated" CPU-NB (IMC) testing, i.e set the whole system to stock and just overclock the CPU-NB clock? . . . obviously not you Gareth as you have bigger fish to fry! . . I really hope you figure out whats going on with your ram fella as you been hassled by that for over a month now? . . . Did you consider trying a new set of RAM? . . . going back a few posts we were talking about the temps of you system, I didn't realise you had a swish Zalman temp monitor with probes wired up directly, awesome, good luck man I hope you get a breakthrough soon!

eddiew: Overclocking the CPU-NB helps shift the huge amount of data around, generally the higher the better! . . . I'm waiting for someone to get some 3GHz CPU-NB clocks posted, that would be amazing! :) . . . If you want a "synthetic" testing tool to help you understand how faster IMC speeds improve data transfer then download EVEREST Ultimate Edition v5.30 (Trial) . . . you can run it from an unzipped folder, run it and find this test . . .

We spoke a little about this subject before back around post #579 in case you missed it!

Big.Wayne. yeah stock CPU-NB voltage is 1.1v..

i guess i'll leave the ram on 1333mhz 6-6-6-15 1t 1.75v for now. i may rma them in afew weeks

the ram is cold when touched

Gareth, have you eyed up a replacement kit yet? . . . what would be the best DDR3 for your system do you think?

Cold Ram huh! . . . so probably not gonna be an overheating issue? :D . . . still RAM or your home leccy I'd say! :)

Big.Wayne, ill probably get G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB 1600MHz CL7 but the prices are alittle high tbh... or i could just rma them and wait for the replacement..

:p, yeah the ram .... nope i don't think it's an a overheating

Any guys here with a 945 x4 95W?

If so whats your OCs like?

Seems like my CPU loves high volts! It fails under stress at 1.4500 @3.6 up it to .4625 still the same up to .4750 bingo. Just gotta sort the RAM out as its running at 800Mhz with 7-7-7-24 timings at 1.86v (original is 667Mhz)

Thanks gareth and big wayne, using 1600MHz memory so I shall pursue the higher frequency (back to 1.3v I guess, but at least I know it's 5-day stable) :)

*edit* Ooo, choices, do I try to lower the voltage or up the frequency at 1.3...? Damn my tinkerer gene :(

FYI guys,
i'm now running 24/7 fully prime stable @ 224x17 = [email protected]. CPU-NB and HTT is set to 2200Mhz-ish. i found at 2400Mhz-ish it would prime error after 6 hours, so reducing this value helped allot. Think I'll try leaving the HTT at that and upping the CPU-NB back to 2400ish later this week.

For those with DDR1600 ram - I'd recommend running the memory overclocked - i.e. 225on FSB (forget wot its called now!) runs my RAM perfectly fine @ DDR3-1500Mhz. if I try to run on anything other than stock with the RAM set at DDR3-1600Mhz I get BSOD's.

hth - Finally got round to some gaming on my new setup - BF-BD2 is awesome!

well i'm trying for 3.9ghz again :D, yeah maybe i'm crazy to try again but now the temps are lower so hopefully there'll be no problems

is it worth me upgrading to a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Rev.C from a Thermalright Ultra-120A?

edited it failed after 3hours..

Big.Wayne. yep 1333 6-6-6-15 1t is sorted on stock ram voltage.

1600 is a no go.. maybe a motherboard issue or the IMC...

when the 890fx boards are released ill upgrade to it then try again.

Don't think its your motherboard gareth as I've had similar problems trying to get 1600 to run - it only works when I have all other settings on stuck - probably too much for the IMc to handle.
I'm pretty sure its the IMC in which case we're both stuck until newer CPU's are released.....bring on thuban
