AMD 69XX delayed officially ?

Its the biggest SPENDING WEEK / MONTH in the whole year.
If you ARE going to buy a £300 card its is going to be for Christmas..

lol

... If you are going to spend that money on a graphics card, then you'll have already done research and know dates, performance, etc...

The fact it's Christmas means absolutely **** all.

Look at all the people buying GTX580's, how can they possibly have bought it? It isn't Christmas yet!!!!

People spend vast amounts of money on graphics cards when they are released or because they are good. Not because they're high on mince pies and a fat man in a red suit is coming to town.

I'm not really too fussed if the cards are delayed but maybe someone can answer this...
Why is this site seen as the final word, absolute gospel truth?

I'm still waiting for AMD to say it's true or not because it's the only word we've heard and that is this site.

i very much doubt it now
they obviously didnt expect the 580 to be as good as it is, they have gone to fine tune the 6970, but i personally think its too late.
If that is the case, wouldn't they just end with a card with high default clock (as usual for the xx70) and left with barely anything for the users to overclock themselves? (take the overclocking on 6870 vs GTX470 for example)...

If it was not true surely AMD would have quashed these rumours by now, which leads me to believe that the statement could well be genuine. But same as anything with the internet, i will not take any of it as gospel jusy yet.

Hi there

To confirm yes 6950/6970 is delayed, you won't be seeing them in November.

They will come mid December.

So it's either:
1) Yield issues (unlikely so close to release)
2) Needs tweaking to beat GTX580 (likely but again they would have done it earlier)
3) TI not able to deliver component (seems likely, would be a cockup from TI though)

Would be interesting to know the real reason for the delay (Not the internerd conspiracy theorys :))

Who can say... We may well never find out - companies don't like to air their "dirty laundry" in public if possible.

That said, the fact that it is only a one month delay narrows down the possibilities. It can't be a respin using an updated design, as this will take far longer than the 4-weeks or so delay that's being suggested. It could be that they are re-flashing the cards to up voltages and clockspeeds in order to beat the GTX580. It could also be that they are adjusting the amount of redundancy in the cards (i.e. disabling more clusters in order to improve yields for the high-end part).

My *guess* is a combination of the last two that I mentioned (reconfiguring redundancy and adjusting clockspeeds to match the GTX580) but that's nothing more than an educated guess based on the delay timeframe. So it would fit loosely into your "intardnet conspiracy theory" :p

Maybe they think that the demand on the 68XX series will slacken if they release them now, so they will wait to try and maximise profits. Its not always the best idea to release a product as soon as its ready.

Intardnet :D

I'm sure AMD would like people to believe this, as it reflects well on the company ("we're delaying by choice not by necessity"). But really, they're aiming at two very different market segments. The £150-£200 market segment (68**) is not really in competition with the £250-£350 segment (69**), so it seems unlikely.
