OK, so I downloaded this game via Steam and the installation went fine. The game starts up and runs fine. Yet I can't create a character at all. Well, I can create one but when I get to the final section I hit the button and it says "Character Creation Failed". No reason is displayed, just the one box with "Character Creation Failed" in there. Then I have to go back and create the character all over again, yes it doesn't save my parameters for some reason, and get the same error message. I've tried a multitude of different combinations of race, skill-sets and the like but nothing will work.

I've looked around the Star Trek: Online forums and see one problem my be saved characters or something, but that doesn't apply to me as I've never even played the game before. In fact it hasn't even been installed on my system until yesterday.

Any ideas people?

Why are all the videos and screenies from this game trying to entice me back to this game (sometimes nearly succeeding).

As a f2p player am i better off being alien so i can later customise as much as i want?

I thought there were two character slots but its actually one for fed and one for Klingon.

I wouldn't mind if it were just the one slot, but I can't even create a single character to play with. So glad I didn't pay for this POS some time back.

What do you mean you can't?

So should i be alien and make a human like character?

I had failed first time, maybe you were just unlucky, i think it might be caused if you mess about too much or keep going backwards and forwards, just create a quick character and change him later on.

Were you using items that you had to buy with cstore points on your costume or something like a top from ds9 costume or whatever when you can select it but you need to buy it at the end of the end of making your character (presume u can dress up using them things at the start as i cant remember if u can adjust ur costume during character creation). But that might be why you couldnt make a character if you picked something that cost cstore points and you didnt have enough.

Or maybe the server was down for maintaince during the time u took to make the character but u were still logged in making a character and didnt boot u for some reason i dunno.

Could be a few things.

i find cannon volley and rapid fire much more important than tac team

Tactical Team works in such a way that you can have it up more or less all the time, with maybe 1-2 secs gap. It transfers shield stregnth to the side being hit instantly increasing survivablilty greatly as you can pretty much forget about your shields. If it starts to get low use Transfer Shield Strength and Aux Power to Shields or whatever its called.

Tip: forget about reinforcing one side at a time, get yourself hotkeys for equal distribution (default is delete key i belive) *if* you are good enough at controlling your ship and spamming the hell out of that your shields will last 2x as long.

i belive you might be using some C-store items, and that is causing you to not be able to create a char.

Yup, used it myself - thats one good thing about STO people actually use diffrent builds instead of all being sheep and taking the "best" set up.

i just prefer doing more damage, in a tactical survivability is not really needed unless your planning on doing non-pug pvp and elite missions/stf's

but even then, nothing can come close to the OP'ness of engineers/cruiser

and for those of you that remember...science was EPICLY powerful until the kiddies starting crying bless them. looks like they have ruined a few things this patch as well

So I went back to using a cruiser as a bit of a test. I got blown up a couple of times, however I found that if I stop trying to play it like an escort, I can actually do quite well. I'm kind of fond of the Aceton Beam ability, which does definitely help to reduce the incoming damage. If I can just get over the fact that they steer horribly, I may get a cruiser at the next rank, too.

I was halfway through the odyssey mission as well, hope it doesn't affect it, don't mind if i have to redo it.

Currently, the Holodeck Server is down. We are aware of this issue and currently working on bringing the server back online as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on this page for any updates and notices on when Holodeck is available again.

Yeah, something up tonight - getting 20-30 second lag equipping stuff in spacedock, and it's booted me a few times.

How is that possible, I'd never even heard of this C-Store thing before installing the game last night? Now, to top the lot the thing won't even connect and is timing out when trying to connect to the log-in servers. Yet my internet is fine, as proved by me using Steam to launch the game and by my posting this here.

Well for one the server just crashed so thats why its timing out.

When creating a character, the options lists for costumes/races/etc will show everything available, the c-store (basically the microtransaction shop) items will be marked with a little c icon but you can still select them even if you haven't paid to unlock them.

Normally ingame at the tailor if you have picked c store stuff you haven't bought it will tell you, it may well be a design oversight that the actual character creator doesn't have an error message for it.

Best solution once servers are up is to pick your class/race/traits/gender/name. Leave the rest on defaults as they can easily be changed in game at the tailor for cheap/possibly free.

You can select items of clothing for your character during creation which have a C icon next to them. Those require purchase through the use of Cryptic points; you can't use them, otherwise.

I'm not selecting any clothing though. I'm just trying to create a bog-standard Starfleet human, I'm clicking through without changing any parameters at all and still it gives 'Character Creation Failed'. I gave up on trying to create a decent looking 'Alien' character as after 30 mins of tweaking it throws up the same error and I have to start again, from scratch.
