** Official 680 review thread **

bloody hell, it's faster than the 7970 and uses less power..... is this right

this means at a much lesser price that it's close to the MSI LIGHTNING, this changes everything....but it only has 2GB ram

wish these cards came out 1 week ago ... man they look nice

It will take time for people to get to grips with the new Kepler method of OCing.

It seems if you push the offset past the capacity of the cards power limits you lose performance so fine tuning the offset into the power envelope is going to be interesting.

Might be a while before we see valid 680 Max OCs.

Absolutely. I'm not concerned though, as the truth always comes out in the end :)

I mean don't get me wrong I think the idea Nvidia had is a very good one, because there are a world of idiots out there who will end up damaging their cards through lack of knowledge. So in that way they have definitely catered to your average "Alienware audience" so fair play for that.

But of course as we well know, it's not what your noob targeted product can do, it's all about performance.

AMD are going to have issues here.. The only reason i can think of that you'd choose the 7970 over the GTX680 is for 3 screen gaming and VRAM usage, 3Gb will come in handy, especially with massive resolutions.

Seems not.

Even at huge 3 screen resolutions it's neck and neck with the 680 pulling ahead marginally in some cases.

A surprise for all, including reviewers...

yes, we need to know the balls out performance, after all, we are OVERCLOCKERS.......Comprende' :D

both cards full whack............ crysis 2 1080p.

both cards will probably be ok, but it'll be the price and ``after market`` upgrades over the next 3 months that decide it, even if i had the money, i still wouldn't buy now, just in case someone releases a really wild overclocked 680 with 4GB ram, because you never know do you !!!!!

there's already 3 of them for the 7970 !

Nothing in it, although it is an Nvidia title of course.;)

After reading more reviews my opinion is that 1 GTX 680 >>> 2 GTX 580s. Its only a slight bit behind a GTX 590 in most games, with just a little more power consumption than a single GTX 560 ti, and the temperatures are unbelievable for a high end card.

I must have one, but I'm still happy with my SLI GTX 560 tis, one of these is just better with much less power consumption!

I'll definitely wait a few weeks until the price comes down and the twinfrozrs are out before fully deciding.

I'm glad that it is basically level pegging.

Oddly, if I had a 6950, I'd probably be looking to ugprade, but I'm actually pretty happy with my 480.

If I had to pick? I'd probably be getting the 680 over the 7970 though. I'm not one to dabble in OCs particularly as I need stability at uni, and I like the lower power and noise reports coming from the 680. Will be particularly intersting to see how much noise the aftermarket 680s are putting out considering the 680 seems to be a much cooler card. The aftermarket ones might tempt me away from my 480, but at the moment I'm thinking the easier option is to just watercool the 480.

Is the 680 a true successor to the 580 or is it more comparable as a step up from the 570? (bearing in mind the rumoured GK110 is in the works).

Yes.

Maybe not from all out performance point of view but in general (Features, power consumption, temps etc)

That is not to say you should upgrade from a 580 NOW. If I was rocking a 580 and not a 285 I would not be upgrading till it was worth it.

Based on what we now know about the gtx 680 I would like some advice from the good folks here.

I recently got myself a i5 2500k, asus p8z86-v/gen3, 8gb ripjawzx. However, I'm still running my trusty ati 4870. I have a 750w antec truepower psu.

I game at 1650x1050 and was wondering which card you guys would go for? As I don't need to run at the mega high resolutions in some of the reviews.

I mainly play world of warcraft and soon, diablo 3(woot) and some battlefield 3 online.

Money isn't really an issue, however I'm not willing to pay £420 for a gpu.

If you do not want to spend £420 then you have no business in a 680 launch day thread :D

Wait for prices to drop (They might, might not) or look at 580s on the members market.

Haha true, but part of me could be swayed in to buying a gtx680 since its the top gpu around atm. What I should have said was I don't know if it would be beneficial for me to buy such a powerful gpu to game at that resolution considering the high cost.
