Luck of the draw, my friend
Fwiw, I get the odd hint of chequer boarding here and there at 1260mhz.
If you lower vram clock and or vram voltage a bit you can sometimes get rid of that. I had the same thing with one of my 7950's. I could run 1100/1500 easily, but go up to 1125/1500 and it would eventually come up with the black squares. I lowered the vram voltage from 1.6v to 1.5v and now i don't get those black squares. The ram is still stable as well so all good in the hood. I blame it on the crappy Elpida ram.
I'm now up to 1125/1500 as a 24/7 clock and artifact free and will try for further over the coming days. 1150/1500 would be nice. I've now surpassed 7970 ghz stock speeds for crossfire so its all good. Using Sleeping Dogs Extreme as my bench as nothing gets the gpu's hotter.
TL : DR - Black squares usually point to vram artifacts. Sparklies or white flashes = core. (at least this is what ive noticed on my 7950's with elpida ram)
