Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

Aside from a possible faulty card im pretty convinced this is a immature driver issue.

I am sure that this is the case, with perhaps 1 or 2 acutually faulty cards it has to be the driver. As I posted a few pages back, I can run BF4 on maximum settings with the GPU usage at 100% for hours on end with no crashes, max temperature 84c with a custom fan profile on afterburner, all at stock.

I run DOTA 2 for 10 minutes and I get a black screen at the most odd times when my GPU usage is really really low. Eventually the black screen will recover (I can still hear the audio in the background) and I will get the classic "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" message.

Once I get this message my GPU memory will be stuck in 2d mode at 150MHz rather than 1250. Only a reboot will allow it to clock back up to maximum frequency.

I just tried starting cod ghosts from an earlier save and all was well until it blackedscreened at the the exact same location, surley its got to be a software problem

I'd assume it is a software problem. Even my 7970 black screens on ghosts. Awful game. Really wish they sort it out. Was actually hoping they would have fixed it by now, but obviously not.

Hi guys, I wondered if any of you could help me a little..

Ive been having black screen issues primarilly in Demanding DX11 (Bioshock, metro LL crysis 3). However, they do not continuously happen with me... Basically the scenario is I might get home from work, boot up the PC from cold and load of one of the above games and then I get a black screen within, say, 10 minutes. I obviously have to do a hard reset, but once this is done I can play all night without a blackscreen. So it happens once, I reset, then its fine all night... However it does it the one time guaranteed I think.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Im currently fiddling around with the voltages but nothings worked yet. Its kinda difficult to test to see if it works though :/.

Is this at stock clocks? Try using a custom fan profile with a fixed speed of 50-60% and see if that helps. Also ensure the power limit is at +50%.

Hi,

Its at stock, however it isa VTX3d 290 unlocked to a 290x. OCUK did this, not myself. My fan profile is relatively aggresive at the mo, though I could put a bit more into it. Might have to buy a soundproof headset though, lol.

Have you ever heard of it just happening once on cold boot? I cant for the life of me get it to happen twice at the moment... Ran about 24 runs of the metro LL benchmark earlier and it wouldnt happen. However I can virtually guarantee that tomorrow when I turn my PC on it will happen within 3-5 runs.

Fair enough, probably nothing to do with the fan then. Are you using the latest 13.12 WHQL drivers?

Heres my notes of the black screen problem with 290X. My PC is powered down over night and when i start it for the first time it will black screen once within a hour. Then i power down and no problems after that. I think if i start the PC and then shutdown it when windows is loaded and start again im good without black screen. Other night i noticed when i black screened and was playing BF4 and talking with my friends in TeamSpeak3 when the black screen occured i was good for talkin to my friends even the black screen was present at the time. The catalyst beta 9.4 drivers were better and the delay of black screen increased but not gone.
This problem havent improved with new drivers. Only workin solution is to start the pc once and shutdown and then start it again. What is strange is that it then works just fine whole day. Next im trying to keep the pc powered on night and see if it still works next day.
I have the similar problem and similar experiences. I have not powered down my pc since last quote and my uptime is now over 5 days and i have used it normallly as before (playing BF4 mostly).
