The official PS4 Headset/Headphones Guide/Discussion

Thanks for the reply and advice mate, will check out the options you posted.

This is my current setup:

PS4 > TOS Link + USB Power > Mixamp

A30 + Mic > Mixamp

Based on this:
If that is wrong then I'll update the OP but I'm sure I read that somewhere. That is why a lot of people have been buying the chat cable to use with the older mixamps. With the chat cable it works perfectly but then you have to connect the chat cable all the way to the MIXAMP which can be a problem.
Should I get the Turtle Beach cable and setup like this:

PS4 > TOS Link + USB Power > Mixamp

A30 + Mic > Mixamp

Mixamp > Turtle Beach chat cable > DS4

does your mixamp allow for USB input? if so and you already have the USB cable try it out. Bare in mind you need to set usb headset to chat audio only and make sure you set the toslink output to one of the lossy compressed formats, the lossy uncompressed format doesn't work with MIXAMPs iirc.

So try the first one out with a friend online, see if they can hear you clearly, etc and sound isn't too low (make sure you can hear them too).

if it's too low then you will need to buy the £4.99 cable from ebay and use the second method.

hopefully if people upload some pics of their setups (i can hopefully do mine tomorrow) then people can see how the setups work and are connected.

Thanks for your help mate, think I will just try out the cable from eBay, will post back with a picture if I get it working.

Ive recently bought a pair of Turtle beach PX4's, they sound great to me for gaming/movies but im not sure id use a pair of gaming head sets for music.

The PX4's look identical to the XP400's ...duno if there is any difference in connectivity or is one deigned to the PS and the other Xbox ?

I would be willing to bet my £27 headphones are better than these for SQ, the panasonic htf600's have been said to sound similar to and better than by some people headphones costing £150+.

so i'm sure they would easily beat a gaming headset with an RRP of £150.

that is the point of this thread, to inform people that gaming headsets are not designed for SQ and you can get a lot better SQ for less money by opting for headphones with a separate mic instead.

read this

http://www.head-fi.org/t/571005/the-panasonic-rp-htf600-s-headphones-more-fun-than-the-hd650

from start to finish just to see how good these £27 set of headphones are for the money. no they are not better than fidelio x1's but they cost 6 times more money.

if these had the name sennheiser on them they would be priced at £150 and come with slightly better pads, etc. that is how good they are for £27.

not only that but i can use these for music and movies, etc (they do leak some sound which there is a mod for sealing up 3/4 of the side vents to improve SQ further).

so people looking buy a gaming headset know they can get a lot more for their money by buying headphones instead.

I have been using the HTF600's with the DS4 and tbh the SQ has gotten a lot better since I turned the in game volume down and they have burned in a little. Cannot wait for my MIXAMP to arrive. I was thinking of getting fidelio X1's but these are honestly so good for the money I would be spending £180 to get nowhere near 6 times the SQ.

If your an audiophile though you may want to go with the philips but if your looking for bang for your buck, these panasonics sound unbelievable for £27. I may buy another as a backup pair should mine fall apart in 4-5 years time.

What you fail to comprehend though is that most people want a combined headset for gaming and don't want a ghetto setup that has a seperate mic they attach somewhere.

That's what gaming headsets give, a complete convenient in one solution.

The whole sound thing is so subjective.

V Moda Boom Pro and Mod Mic solve both those issues but they are the pricier options.

The Boom pro mic and X1 is probably an easier to use option than some gaming headsets.

So that point is mute, obviously the less you spend then you start getting into ghetto setups. But you get a lot more for your money.

does this

look like a ghetto setup?

that is the boom pro mic which can be attached to any headphones with a detachable cord (like the X1's).

mod mic works in a similar fashion attaching a mic directly to the headphones using a small magnet.

I have opted for a very ghetto setup though but it cost me <£32 and probably sounds better than any gaming headset bar the sennheiser PC360 I imagine and the very top ends ones costing >£200.

i just want some wireless 5.1/7.1 solution who won't hurt my wallet :)

MIXAMP - 5.8 Version

Panasonic HTF600

Zalman Clip on MIC

is the cheapest bang for your buck setup, £34 for the headphones and mic (through flubit) and depending on the MIXAMP add another £50-£80 on top.

That would be the same as you buying a £250 set of A50's in terms of Quality but for less than half the price.

If you only want stereo and wired then you decrease this cost down to just £27 easily enough.

i actually don't need mic at all, all i wan't is 5.1/7.1 sound :)

You do know it's impossible to get real 5.1/7.1 sound through decent headphones?

They are all stereo. The ones that do have multiple small drivers within each earpad are crap because the drivers are so small so sound quality on the real surround headphones is absolutely poo, quality drivers need space and you cannot fit 3-4 quality drivers on an earpad, the max you can get is one.

Do you want emulated surround which IMO is worse than a clean Stereo to stereo headphones but good for competitive gaming for directional input?

Basically what are you planning on using this setup for? Is it to play single player games or competitive online FPS?

SP mostly.

well if you want a cheap setup with super sound quality you need to go wired.

to go wireless it automatically adds £70+ straight onto the cost price because you will need to source a 5.8 mixamp second hand.

wired your talking a DAC/AMP using the optical out on the console and then plugging the headphones into said DAC/AMP.

fiio make high quality cheap DAC/AMP devices but again they aren't very cheap to someone who hasn't got a clue about sound quality.

these are the 2 devices you would need bare in mind these should produce a better SQ than a mixamp but it won't be fake surround sound.

the D07 is the better model.

if you want decent sound quality you need to pay for it. the FiiO D3 D03K Taishan is about £20-£30 on ebay.

the FiiO D07 is £40 on ebay.

all you need to do is add an optical cable - costs pennies and a set of headphones to suit your budget, but it won't be wireless.

if you want a high quality wireless setup then sennheiser make some but they cost hundreds of pounds.

if i were you I would get one of the above AMP's (preferably the D07) and the HTF600's that would cost you £70.

want a better set of headphones then add £20 on top of that so £90 altogether and get the Creative Aurvana Live for £50 from amazon instead of the HTF600's.

want to go even better then the fidelio X1's for £180 on ebay plus the dac/amp for £40 is going to set you back £220 altogether.

so there are 3 wired setups for you, you can start to get even more expensive by looking at better dac/amps.

Just want my logitech ue9000s to connect via Bluetooth. That's all sony. Sortitoutsonyffs

There is only one person in that thread who compares the quality to the average turtle beach headsets. It's nowhere near the PC360 level, but then it only costs pennies.

"large step-up from their "Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ Style" headphones, which were the headphones I had previously considered the best pair that Monoprice produced"

maybe you should look at reviews of the Monoprice 8320 (IEM's) and 8323, hes referring to the 8323 in this comparison. They sound better than them and the 8323 sound a lot better than most cans under $100, it's just that they aren't very comfortable (the 8323's that is) which is why a lot of people don't buy them.

These though are comfortable cheap and sound really good for the money.

Monoprice buy from chinese manufacturers that make stuff for bigger brands but rebadge them and sell them for a lot cheaper, these are most likely rebadged gaming headsets, I'm wondering if anyone can identify the originals?

So then we have some sort of clue as to how good they are for the price.

Well I had my monoprice cans delivered today thanks to Amazon Sunday deliveries (!) First impression, they are very shiny, maybe on the tacky side. I've only plugged them into the PS4 remote and the sound is great on just that! The pack comes with a plethora of cables and the decoder box. I haven't set any of that up yet though. I'd assume I would have to wire the optical cable and USB into the PS4 and decoder and remained "wired" during play? No idea what I'm doing to be honest, as the instructions provided cover PS3, not PS4.

For the money though, I'm impressed. You get a lot for your money and they sound good!
