The AMD Driver Thread

Gave up waiting on Batman to be fixed and finally started Witcher 3. Crossfire still a no go but runs pretty well on a single 290 really. Lovely looking game so far. Really want to get it done before the first expansion drops

Crossfire is working almost perfectly for me on The Witcher 3. Odd bit of flicker here and there but that's all, and that's with the 15.6's at 1440p.

Batman is a complete write-off at the moment! :D

Yeh I had quite a bit of flicker on 15.5. I thought there was an issue with the 15.6 in that there was actually no drivers in the download or something? Even a bit of flicker might be too much though I really can't stand it

Yes the 15.5's do have flicker with W3. Try the 1040 modded drivers. No flicker for me and also gets some performance boost over 15.5 betas.

How soon CF supports comes after a game release usually? I heard rumours the lack of CF support.... I had single 290X

It's variable, GTAV was working but not perfectly at release. Witcher 3 was over a week before a usable driver was available but even now it's still buggy with clock issues and flickering.

Other games like Elite people have been waiting months.

Personally I'd never bother with crossfire again.

Batman isn't working as far as I know.

Last year was pretty good for Crossfire, I thought. This year has been pretty awful and drivers with profiles have been appearing a week or two after release with the exception of GTA V. Arkham Knight had a driver out the day before release but that game is just an abomination at the moment.

Put it this way, When I upgrade in a couple of months (probably to a 980Ti unless Fury X comes on leaps and bounds), I'm never even going to consider going multi-GPU ever again.

I tried those drivers (least I think it was those ones. Was ones from guru3d forums anyway. I'd need to be at home to check) and they turned my screen black and white. Had to go back to the 15.5s to get colour back

Hi,

I didn't really wanna create a new thread for this, as some of my questions are mainly driver related, so I thought I might as well post here.

At the moment I am currently running a 7850, but I am looking to upgrade. I've heard from many forum members that a good upgrade path for the price atm is to pick up a 290/290x on the cheap (which can be had for around sub £200 by this point).

I'm definitely still thinking about buying one, but I'm still weary about buying a card that originally came out in 2013 originally.

I'm guessing that this will still have driver support for a long time? Just worried 'cause users are saying that they have to run modified drivers to get the full benefits of the latest drivers from the newer series. Is this just a mistake on AMD's part atm, or are they purposely holding back the R9 200 series back?

Also I'm thinking since these cards are so cheap atm I could go crossfire (just an idea) I've hard running dual GPU's is a bit shaky atm from both sides atm, but is it expected to get better? I've heard that Win10/DX12 have some improvements that help dual GPU set-ups, is that the case?

Thanks :)

Thanks Man, on DX12 there is no CF anymore, but to let that spread widely takes one more year. I'm a bit disappointed on this lack of CF support.

I asked AMDMatt last week or so if the 2xx series will still be supported and not turning legacy, and he confirmed that it will still be supported in the future.

I, personally, would avoid multi-GPU's based on what it's like on Windows 8.1 for myself. Windows 10 may change my stance on that but I'd still be weary about going down that route again.

Yeah, I like the idea of multi-GPU configs, but it just doesn't seem the support is there for it. Thanks :)

We're still supporting the HD5xxx series, so i think you'll be fine for a while yet. :)

well benq have fixed the monitor so a 2730Z is on the cards again or I sell up and buy a fury profreesync or 980t and gsync.

BenQ XL2730Z this monitor needs to have its review re-done... Firmware 002 is quite some difference over 001.. Am noticing better colours, better text.. AM not sure what a FW does but they is defo something done for the better. AMA freesync is quite some difference also.. Its like 001 has Motion Blur enabled and 002 has it disabled is the better way I can put it.

You might notice my FX-9590 is clocked at 3.5Ghz, thats because my water cooler is up for RMA :o
I have CPU bottlenecking in Bioshock Infinite, Thats why the Performance is lower than you might expect

Bioshock Infinite: DX11_Ultra_DDOF

This is one of those games that relies heavily on Tessellation, the (On paper slower R9 285) outperforms the R9 280 massively in this game.
We see the same pastern again with the (on paper the same R290X vs R9 390X)

As you can see from the chart the 390X is some 30% faster, a huge gulf and brings it just about in line with the GTX 980, as that GPU now is in general.

So, there is a small Tessellation throughput increase at the x16 level with the 14.502 vs 15.15 R9 300 series drivers, is it enough to push the performance up on the 290 series?

No. 15% higher Tessellation throughput is not enough to make a difference, Tonga (GCN 1.2) has + <400% higher Tessellation throughput.

The R9 300 Series Drivers may give the R9 200 Series GPU a little Tessellation boost, but i would suggest thats simply because that driver is designed for the R9 300 Series Tessellation engine which to me looks like a different GPU, it looks to me like a GCN 1.2 GPU.

Just tried them just now and working excellent. Everything on Ultra (hairworks off) and its sitting at 60fps.

Cheers!
