Metal Gear Solid. The Phantom pain.

I have never played any MGS games, have not a clue what they are about, but am keen to get this after reading the reviews. Is there any prequel or other game I should play first, or is it ok to jump straight into this?

The reviews were either paid or high because of hideo kojima, Thought the game was insanely boring after the prologue also got massive texture pop in, horse controls like crap, hardly any story, missions get really repetitive, mother base is dull, dno I was so massively disappointed after playing it, if you've not played any of the others you will prob have no idea whats going on, game is at best 6/10 imo

Apart from after say 50+ hours it may feel repetitive, I have had none of your issues personally. Maybe it is a marmite type of game. I am close to 80 hours and I still have not tried all the weapons and play styles :D

The issue here is either people coming in expecting a game more akin to the older MSG's and those who simply do not enjoy this style of game play who purchased the game based on the strong reviews.

I will admit, I am a little disappointed in the game myself, but this is due to expecting something different. The game has so much to offer and overall that makes up for it. Great experience still.

Im at 77 hours and only on the 15th story mission, spending so much time just gathering better rank units for mother base and loving it:D

Damn... I thought I was taking my time doing that, you are taking it to another level. lol.

That said, once you get a better camera/idroid thingy later, you are able to find lots of A+ and S ranks while doing side-ops.

It really is a ton of fun. Surprised so many people do not enjoy it.

I am trying to play MGS5 on PC but in all dark scenes there is a really annoying 'shimmer' around the foliage, is the best way I can describe it whenever there is movement.

I took a video of it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ro1aVdhOvk

Does anyone know if this is something that can be changed by altering graphic settings, or is it something to do with my Samsung screen?

I think its possibly something to do with your screen and to me it looks like lcd ghosting:)

What monitor is it and does it happen in other games ?

Try the following test below at different speeds to test you screen.

I have a Samsung 60-Inch H6200 Series 7 Smart 3D HD 1080p TV, the only other game I have is GTA5 and I cant say I have noticed the same on that.

If I switch the picture setting to Movie mode, it is nowhere near as bad except the picture itself looks awful and washed out. I thought it may be an AA setting, but MGS5 seems to be one of the few games Ive played with almost no graphic settings available for AA.

74 hours in and I've just completed mission 21. I'm milking it for all it's worth. I'm a little confused about the forward operating bases though...

They have just been introduced to me in a way that seems to imply that without them and without being connected to the online mode, I won't be able to experience the game to its fullest extent. As a novice when it comes to most forms of online gaming, can someone please explain to me what being connected online actually means? Will it / does it mean that I am open to base attacks from opposing players?

So what is you completion percentage so far for you guys? I am at 66%, still working through side-ops and upgrading stuff.

All my bases are level 50 and above except for one now :D

Having an FOB comes in handy, I would say it is a must. Do it. I would not worry about it, if you increase the security, not many people attack anyway, unless you attacked them first, which then allows them access to your base for like 30 days to attack you back. Not anyone can attack you as I understand, only like 10 people in your league which are made up of people of similar ranks obviously.

I'm at 18%, savouring every moment pretty much, the game is a real gem with all the best bits of previous MGS fused into one.

Its just incredible how open ended it is and how much fun it is to mess with AI. I've just played the mission about trailing the interpreter to the hostages and the area is just huge and you can take any aproach you fancy. The best stealth game ever, better than SC:Chaos Theory imho :)

One thing that is a must for immersion is turning off all enemy markers/"see through walls" helpers, the game becomes much more immersive without them.

Sat at 92% currently, all my base units are above 70 (highest being my Combat Unit at 81).

Currently farming an absolute TON of Fuel, Common Metal and Bio Resources.

Left my PC on overnight to process my materials, I still need about another 800k of each :(

Whaaaat? 800K?? Not sure I will be going that far. I farmed a bit of fuel from mission 12 I think it was, it is really fast. Problem is not farming, is processing time for me. I don't fancy leaving computer on just for that :)

Do you have like 2-3 FOBs? I just got the 1, which I will be lucky to max out before I burn out from the game I think.

After all the side-ops missions are complete I will just play now and then when I fancy. I think I got about 30 or so left at this point.

I am now 68% complete.

The grind is real, man. I think my Heroism is at 800k or something like that.

Motherbase for me is all 4/4.
FOB 1 - mostly 3/4
FOB 2 - mostly 2/4

Processing time is the main issue for me too at the moment, at A Rank, it takes 12 minutes to process 2500 un-processed materials, which you HAVE to be moving around to trigger, you can't idle in MB or ACC for example.

I've been using this trick - https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgears...tomatic_materials_processing_how_you_can_akf/

Best advice on how to play MGS5 to get maximum enjoyment out of it. I left reflex and attention warnings on, but turned off the rest. You can leave all of them on but markers HAVE to be turned off, they just ruin the game imho.

I've played without markers right from the start, before Quiet or dog were in game. But even now, with them in, I just rely on good old mk1 eyeballs :) The game does feel more tense when you dont know what happens behind the wall, where you have to peek around corners classic MGS style.

I think old MGS games never had markers, they were introduced into the stealth genre with Splinter Cell: Conviction.

This is one of the very rare games, possibly even the only game where I much prefer the game with markers on. Especially the objective markers, as they only give you a rough area(so you at least know you are infiltrating the right outpost!) and the maps are so samey it is easy to get lost. Having enemies tagged makes sense, especially when you have someone spotting for you like Quiet or the dog, or even just the intel team.
