Metal Gear Solid. The Phantom pain.

Just got to Chapter 2.

I know people said it goes off the boil a bit here, and people complained about replaying missions at a harder difficulty.

It's early doors, but but when I did the repeat 'Subsistence' mission where you have to take out the communication dishes (or equipment) and at first I felt completely lost without my equipment or buddy support. For those that haven't played (and I believe these missions are optional) you literally start the mission as normal with no weapons or equipment other than your standard Bionic Arm.

After a few attempts I managed to S-rank it without a guide and that mission felt very tense compared to the missions I had been doing with D-dog or Quiet as my buddy, and my trusty tranq sniper rifle/pistol.

Trying to destroy equipment when you don't have explosives or a gun was interesting.

I chose the target area as the drop zone and then used the mini gun to destroy the dishes. Took 30 seconda and resulted in an S rank. I've been stealthy for the vast majority of missions but decided on a more direct method with this one:D

I didn't have that option, but that's probably because the air radar had been repaired since I was last at that base.

Nearest place for me was 900m away, which was quite a run without D-Horse or D-Walker or a vehicle.

That's a good one. I simply acquired a Honey-Bee from an enemy soldier, sprinted straight in and shot a missile through the window of the building that had the radio in. Legged it back out of the hot zone to a S rank. Pretty ridiculous really.

Already planning my xmas gaming for my month off. This is up there in contention for my time with GTA V and Witcher 3.

I picked up Ground Zeroes in a Steam sale, so got to wondering - as that's nice and short will it actually give me a good insight into what to expect from Phantom Pain? If so, I might give it whirl and let it help me decide which games to buy. But as it's so short I'm not sure how much idea it will give me of what PP will be like. Are they fairly similar games?

Gameplay is obviously similar, though Phantom Pain has a lot more going on.

Ground Zeroes is probably a better stealth game because you are limited by the equipment you start with

Apologies if this has been posted before but i'm trying to pick up the cybernetics specialist in mission 9 which i've done a few times now (having verified the skill). However after finishing the mission it doesn't show him as being picked up and trying to develop the medical arm still shows as 0 cybernetics specialists?

Edit - his stats were so poor i had to clear out enough space and not pickup anyone else as he was being automatically dismissed. Also had to manually assign him to the right team. Annoying.

Okay, had a couple of hours playing GZ.

The positives are that of course it looks great and it's pleasingly unforgiving.

However.... HUGE negative points for me because first off you can't assign many of the keys I usually use to actions in the game. Nothing on the keypad is allowed, nor are del, ins, end, pg dn, etc. All my usual keys. I thought we were past PC ports being deficient in this area.

This meant I had to (try to) play with a controller. Which is (kind of) okay, but I still found some of the needed controls a bit opaque. Like when you have to "interrogate" enemies... what are the controls for that that let me do it more than randomly? And if I knock someone out in close combat, is that all I can do? They are destined to wake up in a minute or so and shoot at me and I can't even incapacitate them long-term when they're unconscious at my feet?

Does PP have these issues? Am I just being dense (though with no instructions or clear key bindings...)?

TPP has same keybinding issues sadly.

If you stun an enemy via a throw/CQB he will get up after around 2mins,if you use tranqs/sleep as they will get back up after around 4 mins.If you want to get to stay down permantly without killing them you need to utilize interrogations and tell them to 'get down'

An efficient way i used was to to Throw/CQC them, then when on they are on the ground stand on the body and click attack to kick them, this will wake them, then quickly point your gun at them and this will instantly put them in the 'Get down' phase of an interrogation. Its quicker and less clunky(due to controls) than a standard Interrogation.

When in the 'get down' state guards stay there permanently, they will only get back up if

1.Another enemy comes across him during their patrol
2.You initiate a combat alert

Right, thanks.

Had another quick go before work this morning, and there's a lot to like about this game, but I think the keybinding issues are going to be a deal-breaker for me. I'm getting better with the controller, but I just plain don't like using controllers for this kind of game where I need to control camera and player movement and it's ruining my enjoyment of it.

Yes, I know lots of people quite like controllers. I don't. It's a personal thing. I find I'm clumsy and uncomfortable using them and will prefer M&KB in almost every game except possibly platformers, so it's always a major disappointment for me when PC controls are bodged.

Anyway, I did find myself getting better and I was eventually able to finish the GZ mission. Though I did just say to myself **** it - and just shot the entire base to get out. I did not obtain a good rank! :)

By the way folks, a new update was released yesterday. Fixed a few bugs like the C2W bug and the blueprint bug and also added a very easy way to re-assign all the MB staff. But it also got rid of the PC customization glitch :( It added a bunch of FOB stuff and now allows people to buy S/S+/S++ rank soldiers with PF points and MB coins (microtransactions) I think (not sure on the latter). Most interesting is that they've added rank 7 upgrades for some weapons and a few upgrades for D-Walker. Unfortunately, these new weapons have ridiculous requirements (R&D team 60+, 15k Precious Metals and other materials) and take 3 hours or so to research. Thankfully, folks can bypass that stuff by mods if they want. Which made me remember that the game update uninstalls all mods. Some mods are broken and other have quickly been updated. A few work like before but disable some new features.

I've also finished the game (I won't spoil it) and I now understand why folks are upset with the story. While it is a Kojima thing to do, it kinda messes up linking the Solid Snake games to the Big Boss games. But then again, it does explain one plot point regarding the original Metal Gear game, which I thought was a nice touch.

I'm not sure what you mean? What is messed up with the linking? I thought it explained it all quite nicely. VS creates Outer Heaven as a body double for BB, who is off actually creating Zanzibarland and pulling strings behind the scene and within Foxhound.
