Metal Gear Solid. The Phantom pain.

Guys
I got this game free with my GFX card but I'm not sure if I should bother with it. I know it's a highly regarded series, but I missed the others, I guess I was more into Quake & Unreal than third person shooters. Are playing the others in the MGS series a must before attempting this one?

I personally do not think that it is. This game is not as story heavy as the others by far, it is more about the gameplay than anything.

I would install and play it in your situation. But checkout youtube for videos to get an idea if you will like the gameplay.

There really is a lot to like :)

Got the game this evening and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Had to check after the Awakening that I was actually playing a MGS game and not some weird installment of F.E.A.R with the weird goings on. Was quite surprised!

Going to give the realism mode video a go to improve my play-style as I am a bit rusty.

After completing the first mission, have I missed important if I missed some of the guard outposts out at all? I'm not sure if 100% completing a mission is possible or if it's just additional gameplay to increase play time if you wish to clear a map mission.

I've played up to story mission 15 now (with about 30 sidemissions completed too) having turned off the markers right from the start and can say that this is not only possible/doable, but this is the best way to play. Just so much more enjoyable and tense having to check your corners instead of rushing through the game knowing where all the baddies are behind the walls. Plus the screen looks cleaner and everything is just so much more beautiful, even the sunset - when you dont have flashing triangles all over it :)

I've left reflex mode on as it can be a bit frustrating to be spotted with no way out other than to shoot your way out or restart from checkpoint.

So I've mentioned this in the AMD driver thread but its maybe worth an ask here aswell. During cutscenes (still in the prologue) the game crashes to a black screen. Drivers are up to date, not happening with anything else and last time I played ground zeroes it was fine aswell. Verified the files with steam but nothing seems wrong.

Let me guess, you are windows 10?

I get a black screen when I first run the game, but all I have to do is turn my monitor off and on followed by changing the in game resolution which goes from my native 4k to a small window.

Once in-game however I do not have any issues and I am running crossfire here. I am still on 15.8 and will stay on these until something worth updating to comes out.

I am on windows 10. Tried it just now and got past that cut scene and all was going well playing fine then I quit the game and have a quick look at the options menu where I black screen again. Turn monitor off and on and all i get is a no signal message.

Should also point out I don't actually have crossfire turned on. Been a very long time since I have.

Why not? It works very well in this game for me.

Not sure what else you can do, the monitor trick worked for me every time.

With regard to Quiet, post mission 31 -

Did anyone else realise before the reveal, that she was the woman who tried to kill you in the hospital at the start? It seemed so obvious in hindsight, but I had no idea.

I actually didn't realise until the final mission, i'm pretty sure i missed a cut scene somewhere.

Seems to be crashing for me quite a bit. It will either do the normal "MGS has stopped working" or it will just freeze and I have to alt tab to task manager and close it from there. Starting to get pretty damn annoying with this now as I'm really enjoying it.
