With vsync on (60fps) my tdp usage is similar to yours, I guess you got vsync on.

My final observation is this.

When power limit is slightly limited, gpuz reports VREL whilst card throttles.
When power limit is heavily limited gpuz will report PWR and card will throttle much more.
When voltage is maxed out gpuz will also report VREL and I do agree that the default shipped bios is limited to 1.09v (possibly also hardware side).

I turned my fans right down and managed to get my card up to 73C, the card I think is downclocking slightly at 70C but its not conclusive, I would have to do a lot more testing.

When i set TDP limit to 60% in afterburner with vsync off, clocks were down to 1600mhz :) At 50% they were maxwell speeds circa 1400-1500mhz.

vsync is off , just ran valley again, all I did was add 107 to core(2138) didn't touch pwr limit or volts or anything, my tdp was 60% sometimes 61/62 it was using 1.062 volts

just having quick play in valley

all I do is set core to +107 = 2138, it can run this speed without touching any other settings, so I bumped it up to +114 in afterburner. nothing happens but my perfcap starts reporting vrel, so I ramp up volts to +100 and it now runs at 2152 and perfcap is blank again. tdp is still around 60% , I havnt touched mem or pwr lmit.

so I believe my card is being restricted purely down to voltage cap

I apologise for all these post

I have just found my cards max clock

so, again using valley , I set just the core to 107+(2138) which requires no extra volts or power, I then set core to +114 which is 2151/2, however it doesn't actually move to that speed until I give +30 on the volts

card is running cool and no artefacts, tdp is 60%, and perfcap reason is blank.

I then try to +122 and even with +100 on the volts it wont go above 2151

So no one here has their 1070 under water? Even a brief look in the 1080 thread, not seen anyone do it yet. One guy did buy some blocks though.

I get the feeling that water cooling would get you that extra 50-100MHz by being able to stay under 40c, but not much more as they do not really hit much more than 2200MHz stable from what I can see.

My Nvidia 1070 FE is under a full water block, project log here

Did 2100 on air with full speed fan @78c.

Does 2138 now on water @45c with 3x 400rpm fans. But it sometimes power (limit) throttles down to 2115.

Hopefully, custom bios will fix this when available, as 112% power limit increase is just not enough.

To me, water cooling it is worth every penny for the silence, but not if you want to push every ounce of performance out of your card.

Thanks for the reply. I can get 2138 but it ends up in the low 60's on my 1070 while playing JC3.

As for sound, due to this card having a huge heat sink on it, the fans are off most of the time and when they come on they are usually running at 33% which you cannot hear over the sound of the game. Best cooler I have ever seen on a GPU by far.

The way this card non reference is designed, I see no TDP, or power related issues, just better cooling is needed to maintain higher GPU Boost clocks. From what I have seen, out of the box it gets 2012MHz when in low 40c, then drops to 2000MHz when high 40's, by the time it reaches low 50's it goes to 1987MHz and if it gets to low 60's it goes to ~1963MHz, but majority of the time it is 1987MHz out of the box. But can get 2100MHz+ when I OC it :D

I would do water cooling myself, but only once I know I will be sticking with a GPU for at least 2-3 years as I cannot be bothered otherwise. Don't think this card will be enough grunt to last me that long on 4k. I will likely do it when big Vega comes out, as I will likely stick with that for a long time once I get it, probably until 10nm cards come out. If Vega turns out to be a dud, will just wait and do it with Volta :)

Just had a look at your project log btw, very nice. Well done :)

you saying you get full FPS (100+) and power usage is at 60%? this doesnt match anyone else's data I compared to. Something seems off with your data or Zotac have provided very generous power limits.

Mine drops to around 60% if I have vsync on (capping framerate to 60). If I drop TDP limit to 60% I get clocked way down to around 1600.

I agree tho from what you described it seems you dont have TDP issues at all, I am just shocked how low your TDP % is tho.

Palit have a TDP limit of 170 watts (not sure if this is 100% or 114%), if your cards on Zotac report 60% usage at 1.09v it would suggest those cards have a TDP limit of at least 238 watts.

In my case I get VREL at 114% power, VREL and PWR at 100% power, if I then set +100% voltage, I get both VREL and PWR at 114% power. My card will drop to 1.06v due to TDP when I try to run 1.09v, but it can hold 1.09v if I have vsync on capping the framerate with low card utilisation.

When I checked around the web, there is variance in TDP usage, but yours is way down on what I have seen, the lowest I have seen from people running unigine with maxed voltage is in the high 90s.

just ran it again, @2151,
start of each scene fps is about 80, then as the scene plays its anywhere over 100, sometime 150 ect

vsync is off in NVidia control panel and valley

Due to limitations of my case, I pretty much have to water cool my GPU. Any non-blower card will get too hot down there.

If you already have a CPU loop, likely costing about £170-200, then a £80 GPU block is not too bad. But if you have good CPU cooling solution that you are happy with, then I would not splash out on a full loop just to water cool a 1070.

As you may well have gathered a single 1070 (or 1080) does not need to be water cooled.

For my case, I just wanted to do a summer project, enjoyed the process and happy with what I ended up with. :)

About boost clock drop on Palit 1070 JS after some OC.

Afterburner settings was same, cooling, memory clock, core clock.

Org bios.
http://i.imgur.com/J90SG9T.png
GPU Power max slightly above 170W in my test spot in the game(HWiNFO)

GameRock Premium bios

GPU Power max slightly abowe 190W in my test spot in the game(HWiNFO)

So extra 20W It helped a bit.

I should mention that,
I could reduce drop clock on org bios by doing some undervolting.
With that, clock droped to 1974MHz instead 1936MHz

KLM yeah I see the zotac has 2 8 pin connectors, seems they not just for show and zotac have set a much higher TDP limit on that card. :) So i would say your card is the best in the 1070 range by a mile because of the cooler and the TDP limit.

sir, can you be kind of enough to add valuable TDP utilisation to this data?

Also if you measured 190 watts (no idea how you measured), then I guess the 170 watts spec is for 100% limit, and the extra 14% on the slider raises it to 193.8 watts. If I was to bios mod a card with one 8 pin connector, I wouldnt set it above 225 watts so even with bios modding the palit cards can only probably safely add about another 30 watts although thats at least enough to comfortably sustain 1.09v and maybe push up to about 1.12v.. Zotac I think with their 2 8 pin config are onto a winner. Because as soon as a bios editor is released, these zotac cards will pull right away with unlocked voltages.

I am very pleased with it, I actually returned a palit 1080 and took home this, much happier with the 1070 for the price.

I don't overclock to play games, just to play around with card as its new.

but its definitely voltage locked to 2152, obviously with better voltage control/voltage unlock these cards should be capable of a bit more, well mine should be as its voltage capped and every other parameter is not being stressed. :)

I'm not sure how accurate is this.

"I wouldnt set it above 225 watts"

Same here.I'm not going to go higher.
Only stabilized at around 2000 MHz.
