I noticed in the original 480 review on Guru3D that Polaris does much better with Gameworks effects as well. It's up there with the Fury X in Fallout 4 until you push passed 1440p

I'm getting better results in FO4 at 3440x1440 with the 480 than with the Fury X!

Well this just happened while on BF4, GPU fan went to 100% and wouldn't go back down till I rebooted system.

What driver are you using? 16.7.3? Look at the fan profile, notice its stuck at one speed then instantly jumps to a much higher speed.

I've had exactly the same thing with my 480. Seems to be a driver issue with 16.7.1 being the last correctly working driver with the subsequent 2 increasingly worse at failing to update the fan speed in relation to gpu temperature.

If you notice there are 2 jumps in the fan speed on that graph both very large with it flatlining in between. If you left it long enough the fan would likely drop down to something lower when the gpu temp drops... eventually. It does with me anyway. Rolled back to 16.7.1 and all has been fine since there are still visible steps when it ramps up and down but they're micro steps rather than macro jumps. There is still no Afterburner available for these cards so the default fan profile is all thats currently available.

That's because the RX series have a hardware feature that the R9 series does not.

Primitive discard accelerator, helps when certain games use excessive levels of tessellation by discarding triangles that do not influence the rendered scene.

uninstalled my drivers and ran a driver cleaner a while back, getting a lot less spikes on the vddc sensor and less random 100% load sensor readings while idle :)

seems to off done the trick it takes ages now before it hits a voltage higher than i set (probably sensor glitch) and when it does it is a lot lower than before :)

reference rx 480 1080 core and 950 memory undervolted for the past week or 2 and been stable :)

just came out from playing starcraft 2 all night and got this slightly exceeding what i set

2 nights ago i came out same game and it never exceeded the voltage, guess its the sensor :)

is there an issue with the sensors on the reference sapphire 8 gig cards?

really happy with this reference card though and im glad i never bought a 390, might go for a second one when the prices go back to sane land :)

amd matt : is there a difference between undervolting the card or choosing compatability mode?

Did anyone tried connecting it to 4K tv.? Every time I set it to 60Hz PC just reboots as if the reset button was pressed.
I know I should use hdmi 2.0 cable which I don't have but I thought it won't hurt to try.
In worst case it shouldn't let me choose 60hz or display anything but definitely not just reboot.

So yesterday I realised that 4K 60hz works in games but not desktop weird.
Must be drivers or Windows problem.
Oh and it works on a cheap 99p cable no problem.

Yes, compatibility mode ensures that less voltage is taken from the PCI-E slot and more from the 6PIN. You don't really need it unless you are using a Motherboard from the early 90s, but the option is there for people who are concerned about that.

Undervolting just provides less voltage overall, reducing temperatures and fan noise.

If you want the ultimate efficiency, enable compatibility mode, power efficiency and undervolt at stock clocks. You'll save a fair bit of power, if you are that way inclined. Memory should do at least 900v at stock clocks.

I'm gutted that the stock fiasco of the 480 Nitro force my hand to get a fury as my own card (gf still has and loved her 480).

I'll be back on polaris myself sometime next year on vega

Slightly lower clocks than the Nitro, and I think marginally hotter but uses less power from info I've seen, and also due to the subtantially larger cooler it runs quieter under load.

Once Trixx/Afterburner are updated properly, I suspect due to the stock VBIOS being tweaked for noise, if you upped the dB/fan speed and volts then that substantial cooler will come into its own providing you get a decent chip in the core lottery.

Vortez were able to push thier sample to 1430 Mhz even with the basics provided by Wattman.

The only issue I'd have with it is it's enormous. I'm not sure it would fit my Aerocool QS202.
