The AMD Driver Thread

Use display driver un-installer.

Don't know about the 7870, but I have a MSI twin frzr III 7850 in another system and it works perfectly fine, no issues at all and it is used for a lot of video playback. Temps are also great, don't even have MSI AB etc. installed to undervolt etc. as there is no need too.

I would advise you to have a read in the last few pages of the nvidia driver thread too, just as many complaints as in here except far more over the last year...
Well it's always seemed to be certain games at certain times. When I was suffering from it before it was Elite Dangerous, typically when driving on planets.

Then about 2+ months ago I did an underclock and quite literally rock solid since...

Then the driver upgrade yesterday, and by coincidence my first problems in Empyrion which I've been playing for weeks!

Best thing to do is give it 2+ days and see what people are saying on here before you update, I usually do this but with the new ones, I decided too soon. Back on 16.11.5 and not a single problem.
Well I thought the current drivers (16.12.1) were OK as they've been out for a while!?

But I don't think it is driver specific. As these freezes seem to happen under heavy loads as if temp is the issue!?

Fury Pro Win10 , constant red screens of death with Relive, ddu'd tried again, still cack. On boot the Radeon software took ages after boot before becoming available to open / show in taskbar . Plus seemed to cause all kinds of problems with NZXT Cam not loading / opening. Even with Cam uninstalled, same crashy crashy.

Back to 16.11.5 all is well again.

If I want to go back to 16.11.5 I assume I can just install ontop for ease of life?

ie: The software doesn't know if you're installing 16.11 or 16.13 onto 16.12?

I've never done a rollback but if I had to I'd do a full uninstall

Hmmm... My logic head is asking how the computers knows any difference between installing 16.13 ontop of 16.12 or 16.11 ontop of it!?

Anyhow... :)

But yes, I guess doing a remove program first of all, and then doing it might be a safer path.

But I'll stick with 16.12.1 for the moment... As I said, I think it's a temp thing.

Use DDU. It literally only takes an extra few mins and makes sure that all previous AMD crap is cleared from your system.

The newest drivers have only been out for a week or 2 at most and as you can tell from the last few pages of this thread, there are an unusual amount of posts complaining about them. Likewise with reddit, a lot more threads than usual stating issues with them.

I thought you said the problems just started since updating to the latest driver? If so, then the newest driver is the culprit.

Unless your GPU is hitting 90+ degrees, I doubt that is the problem.

So uninstall Catalyst by remove program?
Run DDU? - All in normal or in Windows Safe mode?

Install new (old - 16.11.5) driver?

Thats about it but if you're going to do it may as well and try and reinstall the latest drivers just in case it is an install bug

No need to use safe mode

Giz
Well:-
1) I'll stay where I am at the moment. ie: Re-installing the same drivers again, may get me no where.
2) I'll check my current fan settings/behaviour and temps.
3) If problems do continue to happen, I'll revert to 16.11.5 (assuming newer drivers don't appear).

1. uninstall AMD via uninstall manger in windows, no need for safe mode here
2. reboot when it tells you to
3. run DDU, reboot to safe mode
4. run the recommended option, it will be reboot once done
5. install said drivers and make sure you right click the exe and select run as administrator

Sorry... Step 3?

So you run DDU, and then you have to reboot to safe mode? eg: Go back to lock screen and SHIFT+restart (if I recall)?

No, choose the option in DDU to boot to safe mode:

Ahhh perfect! So it does it all for you. Thanks! Appreciate the help!

As I said, I won't rush into doing this. Years has taught me, if it's not very broken, don't try and fix it... ie: I could do all the driver uninstall and replacement and end up with a blank screen at boot up, or something else bad.

So I'll take baby steps!

It really is as simple as this:

1. uninstall AMD via uninstall manger in windows, no need for safe mode here
2. reboot when it tells you to
3. run DDU, reboot to safe mode
4. run the recommended option, it will be reboot once done
5. install said drivers and make sure you right click the exe and select run as administrator

DDU is very easy to use, it is just the above, PC reboots, you enter your password, program starts up automatically, read a few instructions and click one button, it goes through files etc. deleting anything related to amd (although not every single driver related thing is caught but it is far better than just an uninstall) and once done (only takes a few minutes, if that), it reboots back into windows and that's it.

Personally I have never had a problem with DDU. Any time I have had issues, this program has generally fixed it.

A few things you can do after but it isn't really necessary:

- run ccleaner, both clean cache and registry cleaner
- manually go through and remove any left overs by AMD

Just received my RX480 today upgrading from a Nvidia card, should I keep power efficiency on or off? Also is there any other options in Crimson I should be aware of?

Thanks

I have it off. It seems to cause poor performance sometimes :/

Good to know, btw I've my RX480 on the way, not sure if I should uninstall the latest AMD drivers or just leave them installed(Win10) when I upgrade, since I'm going from 280X OC to XFX RX480 GTR so AMD to AMD, no overclocking utility used.
