The Official Playstation 3 FAQ & Sticky thread

Thanks guys for the feedback, and for applying for it to be a sticky (didnt know how to do it myself). Its still not quite finished yet, got some info about the PS network setting up your router, etc, and other Stuff, and I want to do something about game info but not sure what and if it will be of any use.
I still need some ideas on how to do a proper PSN id section, dont want it to link to an external site really.

Had a total mare at the weekend when i wanted to view my holiday snaps on the PS3 !

PS3 media capability

Apart from a BD and DVD player , Sony have included many other useful media functions on the PS3 console, including media streaming, Photo slide shows, music players etc.

The Basics

PS3 Card Reader
All PAL PS3's at present have a built in card reader, this allows you to plug your memory card from your camera straight into the PS3 to display photos. Supported memory cards are SD/Multi Media Card, Compact Flash, and Memory Stick, the card slots are located under the flap on the top of your PS3. To insert the cards, push card in until you hear a small click noise, an orange light should then appear next to the relative slot to show the PS3 has found the card. To release the card, push the card in until you hear the click and release the card should pop out slightly allowing you to remove it, if a bit stiff to remove push card in again and try again.

USB Devices

In the front of the PS3 there are 4 USB 2.0 ports, these allow you to plug in external storage devices such as external Hard disks, MP3 players and Flash drives. If you are using an external Hard disk make sure that it is formatted to Fat32 or at least the partition you want the PS3 to use is.

Supported Formats

Sony updates support for file formats in various System Software updates, but at present the PS3 supports these formats,

Photos
* JPEG (DCF 2.0/Exif 2.21 compliant)
* TIFF
* BMP
* GIF
* PNG

Music
* Memory Stick Audio Format(ATRAC)
* MP3(MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3)
* MP4(MPEG-4 AAC)
* WAVE(Linear PCM)
* WMA

Video
* Memory Stick Video Format
- MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
* MP4 file format
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
* MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
* MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
* AVI (does not included DIVX codecs )
- Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
- Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
* AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)

File Structure

When using external devices, such as flash drives, Hard disks etc it is important ( but not essential ), to put these folder names in the root directory of the drive and add the relevant media.

Video
Music
Picture

Arranging the folders like this will allow the PS3 to pick up the media straight away. If you don't want to or cant arrange the files like this for example on a MP3 player, when you connect the device the PS3 will see the device but not be able to find any files. You have to force the PS3 to search the device, this is done by selecting the correct tab for the data ie video, music then highlight the external device and press triangle to open up a menu and choose DISPLAY ALL this will open up the full directory structure of the device for you to browse.

You can copy all your non protected media to your PS3 hard drive if you wish this is done by selecting the file or folder you want to copy then pressing the triangle button and selecting either copy or copy all.

Photos

Viewing photos
To view a photo just go to the Photo tab in the XMB and select which one you want to view. When viewing a photo pressing the triangle will bring a selection of things you can do with your photo. From here its possible to Zoom, rotate and trim you pictures to get the desired view. You can also set the photo as your wallpaper for the XMB, be careful though as the icons will stay white so using a photo with a very light background may make the Icons hard to see. By using the R1 and L1 buttons you can go back and forth through your Photo collection. You can also print your picture from here to, but will cover that later.

Slideshows
The PS3 includes some nice slide show functions, by selecting a photo and pressing the start button will start the slide show. At the moment there are 3 Slide show modes firstly there is a normal photo viewer which displays your pictures full screen, then there is a photo album then photo album 2.
Both the photo album modes renders a "virtual" Photo album complete with dates and real looking photos (you'll see what i mean when you try it!), the first photo album mode kind off throws you photos onto a white surface (with shadows) to simulate you putting photos onto a table top, i must admit it looks quite impressive. The next Photo Album mode looks more like a standard photo album. To stop the slide show either press the triangle and select stop or just press the circle button to quit. You can also play music while watching a slide show, get you slide show started and press the PS button on the controller to bring up the XMB and select the track you wish to play, note that you cant play Super audio CDs at the same time as a slide show. If you start the slide show first you control the music side of things and vica versa. Dont forget you have to stop both music and Slide show when you have finished.

Printing
ONLY WORKS FOR EPSON PRINTERS AT PRESENT!
Since the 1.8 system software update Sony have now added a feature to print your Photo from your PS3. Select the Photo you want to print, if the photo is on a DLNA server you will have to copy it to your PS3 first. First of all you have to set up your printer, goto the settings tab on the XMB and select printer settings. You only have the option for Epson printers at the moment select your printer, you should be ready to go! You can check your printer status in the printer manager, this can also be used to cancel any printing in progress. To print a Photo select the photo, then press the triangle button to bring up the photo menu. From here select print, you can now change the print settings or number of copies to be printed. The items that can be set vary depending on the printer in use.
