what in gods name are those big round things that look like fans!?!
In the Star Trek fictional universe vessels commonly have magnetic hydrogen collectors, referred to as Bussard collectors or Bussard ramscoops. Those are seemingly fitted on the forward end of the twin "warp nacelles", and have a "reverse" function that allows for spreading hydrogen as well as sucking it in.
Probably fans then.
I'm no trekkie, I was just quoting wiki!
(But only because I couldn't find my Enterprise-D blueprint book)
I sure as hell am not going to spend cash on a TNG boxset when it's on Skyone /Dave/whatever practically every day though![]()

Gotta love Trekkies on a PC forum....but how do the engines really work?

Looks pretty decent to me!
You frighten me.![]()
I want an up-to-date one, so after Voyager and DS9![]()
Why? The temptation, if they went that route, would be to simply do exactly what they were doing before but make the ship a tiny bit faster, the phasers a touch more powerful, give them a new type of torpedo (maybe a purple one this time) and a new transporter effect. Great. Super. Wonderful. But what the hell would be the point?
At least with this new film, they can take a step back and reboot the franchise. The original series crew and ship, but with 2008's idea of the future rather than 1966's. I'm liking the ship - same classic silhouette as the original Enterprise, but with a lot more detail (some of it very TMP-like). There is still potential to seriously screw this up (as they did with ST: Enterprise), but I'm still looking forward to it. Hell, it can't be any worse than Nemesis....
