As I have posted recently, I'm after a new motor. Had almost decided on *** 540 beemer but I got thinking after seeing a GTO and hey presto, a UK 3000GT TT is only £750 fc insurance with £100 xs - no too bad considering the pace of the things!

What do I need to look out for. I presume I am right in that the GTO is an import and the 3000GT is the UK car?

Cheers

Fast but weighty.

Gorgeous looking cars and I was close to getting one at one point but went the M3 route ;)

Gibbo had one I believe so he is the man to ask

Everything. They are highly specced and the engine bay has no room anywhere in it so I'd imagine labour rates for any job are very high.
You'll see an interesting look on everyones face when you pop the bonnet, it really is cram packed with stuff and scares the bejesus out of most people :p :D

What about a Skyline? :D

Gibbo's the guy to ask definately :)

What I do know is definately go for a UK GT3000 (yes they're GTO's over in Japan) as the UK's used large turbo's than the JDM's and put out more ponies  (320 > "280"?)

Hi there

Here's mine:-

Its for sale too !! ;)

I test drove many cars before deciding including an M3 and M3 Evolution along with Subaru P1 and a couple of other cars. :)

For me the 3000 GT won it pretty much hands down its got such great road presence with super car performance and the performance is like entering warp drive with those turbo's. Get off the mark quick is so easily as does not require tricky high revving pull offs due to the 4WD and huge amount of torque.

Stunning cars, but Imports are slower and cost a lot more to insure. Decent UK cars are becoming rarer but good ones can be had if you look hard, if your interested in mine then get in touch. :)

I've owned mine for 18 months and its been a superb car, never failed me but I have looked after it, but like any Japanese built car if you get a decent one they won't fail you.

The only real weaknesses of the 3000GT is the 18-22MPG city mileage but you can get upto 30MPG on the motorway and they are heavy at 1700kg, but saying that they have immense levels of grip so do stick to the road well and inspire confidence to drive fast. Cruising at 160mph feels like nothing but top speed is around 180mph and even then your only at around 4500rpm in top gear. :D

One of my mates ran a GTO for about 2 years, he absolutely loved it, but unfortunately had to sell up due to it being vandalised a couple of times :(

The sheer force of the thing when the turbo's spool is absolutely stunning, it really was quite an event. Cornering grip was imense, but in my opinion that somewhat removed part of the fun of 'hustling' a car. The braking package is quite effective considering it's weight & while it is a big car, it gives the impression of 'shrinking' around you. And talk about road-presence!

Here's a wee piccy from a road-trip to Wales, we had some great fun going head to head against it! :)

Could not agree more you really can feel the acceleration in these. I've now got the Saleen Mustang which on paper has similar BHP and as good performance but the Mitsubishi 3000GT feels a lot quicker but I am told thats known as turbo surge or something. They make things feel faster as putting that aside the speedo on the Saleen goes round damn quick.

I made a few simple yet effective modifications to mine which massively improved throttle response basically meaning anything over 1500rpm and acceleration was immediate all the way upto 6000rpm, no laggy throttle response at all. :)

Very quick cars in a straight line and easily moddable for little money to big BHP figures with torque to match in a car that can put the power down and has the looks plus road presence to match. :D

What tyres are you running on the Saleen Gibbo?
In this months evo they mentioned a huge improvement going from Yoko AVS to Yoko Advan Sport when they bolted some Roush rims to the GT.
I remember reading that you had been very impressed with the dry handling.

(Sorry for going off-topic!)

Its got the Saleen wheel and tire upgrade package on.

High Performance Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Upgrade
P275/35ZR20 (Front)
P275/40ZR20 (Rear)

Don't know if they are a good tyre or not but at that size there is pretty limited choice to have matching tyres all round.

wow,,, must be quite efficient. VR6 golf supposedly only do 20mpg and the GTO is a bigger engine, twin turbod, 4x4 and over 500kg heavier lol

Yep pretty funny actually because "Dangerous" who had the Ford ST220 only got the same economy as my 3000GT. His Ford was a 2.5l V6 with 220BHP verus my 3000GT with a 3l V6 with Twin Turbo's. :D

Ford V6's have always been fuel gusslers and I'd imagine the Golf is no doubt the same. Wheras the JAPS got their V6 not only in a better state of tune but more economical at the same time. :)

Also in the 3000GT the engine does not have to do much work when cruising, plonk it in 6th and 100mph is approx 2800-3000rpm and with a 7000rpm limit its no wonder it does reasonably well on petrol as the engine just aint having to work hard. :)

The Ford V6 in the Stang doesnt really push that much power IIRC (0-60 in 7ish seconds i think) compared to a lot of others, same with the 5l V8 in the current stang GT (0-60 in just over 5.5 aint it?), but the sounds they produce are pants wetting territory and the looks of the cars are far superior.

Gibbo, you have too good taste in cars, i really want to be you right now.

I always wondered what the difference between the 3000GT and the GTO was. Thanks for enlightening me.

As a reward, I shall post this picture I took at JAE last year! It is quite pretty.
