I know many many people who have been done by Gatso, Truvello and handheld camera/radar devices (myself included) but don't know anyone who has personally been done for speeding through a SPECS enforced stretch of motorway.

Has anyone here been done by SPECS? If so how do they term the speed given for the offence?

Not many people get caught using SPECs. They recently released the figures for the 50mph stretch from the A449 to the A48(M) along the M4. 110000 cars use it daily yet less than 6000 people have actually been caught so far.

Someone on here's girlfriend got caught a few times on the same stretch of road.

suspect the limit is probably set higher than the usual 56mph then, probably more like 70 or something to only catch those that really put their foot down.

Most of the SPECS-monitored roads I've seen have pretty good compliance rates. Much better than other roads at least.

Never knew anyone having ever got done, and in the last 2 months 2 people I work with got done. One on the A127 (permanent 50mph limit), one on the M25 J27-J28 (50mph roadworks limit). That one was doing 59mph and got "lucky" and was offered the speed awareness course.

My dad got done a couple of years ago on the M3 doing a steady 70 through a SPECS-enforced area of roadworks. He was bringing my sister back from the airport at 2am and apparently didn't even notice all the signs, which is ever so slighty worrying!!

Didn't see the NIP so can't tell you what was on it unfortunately.

I suspect the main reason they don't see many tickets is that the compliance rate is massive, most people obey them. I used to sit at a sat nav indicated 51 through the ones on the M1 after junction 25 and was often one of the faster moving cars on the road as other people followed a spedo indicated 50. You also have to factor in the terrible successful read rate of the system, fortunately it doesn't actually have to work very well as the threat appears to be enough to keep peoples speed down something which Gatso fails miserably at.

Even now those the ones on the M1 around that junction don't seem to have an affect on people. When I was driving up/down there it was almost like everyone who stuck to the speed limit or less were in the two left lanes and the other two right lanes had people going 80+mph in them.

It's odd as those driving above the speed limit showed no signs of slowing down.

On a side note, I hope I wasn't caught by SPECS on the M6 last weekend. Though having a look on the net there doesn't seem to be any on that stretch of the motorway so perhaps they were just traffic cameras (I remember the lines in the road however). :o

Thats probably because there arent actually any cameras in those trelises over the M1 around junction 25. All the signs and mounting points are up but if you look closely there are no cameras in them.

Hey Binnsy :)

10 mile+ stretch of the A1 has them where they're converting it to A1(M), annoying but everyone obeys it.

Still waiting for someone who has been done, not someone who knows someone who has been...

There are no longer any specs on the M1 bettween junction 25 and 28 they went a long while back. The overhead gantries are in place for the variable speed limit which will be backed by Gatso's but this hasn't been enabled yet hence the lack of red rings round the speeds they are putting up, as soon as the red rings appear the Gatso's will be on and people will slow down until then they are just old fashioned advisories.

The relatively low figures for people caught that have been published suggest you will be waiting sometime given the small sample size on this forum. Perhaps we should really be askeing who regularly drives through a set of specs at 80 and hasn't been sent a fine?

I got done doing 56mph in the 50mph zone around some road on the way back from Kettering to London. That was back in 2006.

My points clear off in June 2011 but my car insurance renewal is May 2011. Am I going to have to tell them still? What happens when the points do clear, can I ring the insurers and see if it reduces the premium ?
