Star Wars. 4 5 6 1 2 3 or 1 2 3 4 5 6?

I'm forcing my GF to watch the Star Wars films. I think I'm going to go through them in number order just so the story is easy for her to follow, but is there any reason in terms of the story or what's told in it that means it better to watch them in release order?

I've seen them all a few times in no real order so can't recall if there was bits that depended on other bits, etc.

1-6. It's the way they were intended to be viewed because it's the order in which they were made. There were loads of 'fan service' moments in the new ones that wouldn't make sense if you watched them first.

Edit - see below.

4, 5, 6 first always. You need a reason why? Seriously? :p You'll totally spoil things in the originals that will be given away in the new ones and there is stuff you won't get in the new ones if you watch them first.

Lol, I thought this might get a reaction :p

I don't get the hate for the new ones, but maybe that's because I wasn't an uber fan of the originals?

If you watch them 1-6 you'll spoil the classic 'Luke, I am your father' moment.

Disagree. Knowing Vader is Luke's father ruins the climatic moment of the later film.

Treating 1,2,3 as a "fleshing out" of the known story is better than watching them in sequential order IMO.

7,8,9 for me. I particularly enjoyed Justin Biebers role as Luke Skywalker's son and his saving of Luke from the Dark side. Very powerful stuff, especially the scene where Bieber is revealed to be Skywalker's son, "No Luke, I am your son".

My GF already knows this, as I expect most people who haven't seen any of the films will too. Its quite difficult to find anyone who doesn't have a passing awareness of Star Wars.

This. You can really appreciate the CGI mastery of the Gungan battle vs the wookies. Especially the twist where the Ewoks swing in with light sabres.

Did anyone else appreciate the song and dance number after the battle where we learned the true value of friendship?

Not as much as I appreciated Leia back in the goldkini, hard to believe how great she looked after so many years but then again ILM are masters at their trade.
