Exactly, you learn jack at a-level, my a-level design tutor didn't know what kerning was! [...]
Really?!

Oh, I disagree with that - Fine Artists are at the apogee of guff :D

From my - possibly biased ;) - experiences and observations, graphic designers are in a difficult position. On the one hand, there is a constant need to justify their solutions due to damn near everyone thinking "I can do that - it's just drawing and font selection". On the other there is the strong compulsion from big/high-paying clients to justify the expense, hence multipage presentations full of guff; see the recent Pepsi brand redesign by the Arnell Group for a particularly astonishing example.

Skippi - I'm afraid to say that unless you're incredibly fortunate, you will have the love for design knocked out of you. It's a bit of a no-win situation: if you've done good design work, it doesn't get noticed [because it's not meant to; good design is transparent], but if you do something bad, people from all walks of life will queue up to tell you just how bad it is.

The trouble with design is that too many people think it's a profession of creative expression, when it isn't; it's about solving problems and communicating. That's it.

And if anyone takes umbrage at that statement, and wishes to engage in a "what is design and how does it differ from art?" type debate, I'll be quite categorically somewhere else ;)

Anyway, good luck to all those that have entered :)

Thanks for all the comments.

I've developed the idea into a more traditional form
with specific emphisis on making it less "spermy" :p

This man speaketh remarkable truth. Very good ;)

Edit: final submission here: clicky

Heh, seems I've missed a lot of replies and new submissions! Catching up on replies now with a few added tweaks to my one. Pretty sure it's clear that 2D style neat and simple is the way forward, so there's no point playing around with my 3D modelled speedo logo anymore or messing around with complex symbols, though that does not rule out more subtle simpler/clever designs I guess.

Also I happened to notice a couple of people have been... inspired... by my idea to use a thin slice of the union flag as a horizontal underline... no worries though I guess. ;)

Tidied up some minor dimension discrepancies and removed the inferior font examples, added slogan to all examples, and added a suggested minor change to flag lines design. Any feedback/suggestions much appreciated... ;)

Also some late responses from earlier feedback:

Do you like it now? ;)

Like yours a lot Heofz. Very subtle with the union jack. I think the bottom of the four works the best, the 3rd coming close to that.
Thanks for the feedback mate, will do a little more tweaking before my final proper submission in a couple of days.

I really like Nasters 3rd. Heofz's 2d and Kenai's last.
Which one of my designs were you referring to?

nimz I'll be honest with you, I wasn't hugely impressed by your previous logos up until now, but these ones I think are truly badass. Good work!

Heofz I really like yours on a black background
:) Made a wee example pic...

Hahaha! Just kidding bud! Thanks for the honesty. I am liking your submissions too. Theres a sh@tload of good stuff in this thread.

Good work guys! :D

Lol. I was looking at your designs then Heofz and was going to reply saying 'I think I may have mentioned earlier on in the thread, but I really like yours.' But it looks like I must have! :D

One thing I've been trying to make sure my designs do, is work best on all backrounds, so the forum blue, the shop page black, and then white for on paper etc.

Heres a couple with slight variations which i've spent far too much time on tonight  :p Although there still not quite finished, as I think I could improve the thickness of the borders and the O & c?

Some feedback would be appreciated.

Edit: sorry about the size, I'll try and fix it now!
