Is the MX5 the new Mondeo?

Now? It's been recommended as a cheap fun car since, well, it's been cheap and fun. Which is, like, forever. Not quite recommended for the same purpose as a Mondeo usually :p

Think it's just considered a very affordable drivers car, Cheap, Uber reliable, easily modable & don't forget the man points for owning/driving RWD. :p
Me I got a 17 year old FWD Escort so what do I know. :D

Loved the mx5 from launch. But why are they always driven by old people? Round here anyway

It's the closest thing you can get to a classic British small 2 seat rwd sports car without buying a classic British small 2 seat rwd sports car, it appeals to men who always loved cars like the Spitfire. Their are all owned by old folk here too almost all of which are lifetime members of the local classic car club. It annoys the local chavs because one minute their cruising along in their "tuned" Saxo (and by tuned I mean 100 decibel exhaust and 200 decibel sub-woofer) looking cool and the next minute they get overtaken by an MX5 racing a TR8 or a similar :P

Everyone is just looking for "summer" cars and cheap fun.

Plus it's clear the motors forum is just one giant closet. I love man meat and I'm not afraid to admit it. It's about time we all sat in a circle and encouraged each other to reveal their true selves.

not sure I quite 'get' the mx5 addiction,

A young lad pulled up at the lights next to me in one, floored it and snaked his way up to the next set of lights 800m up the road as I pulled up next to him, he uttered "better luck next time". I honestly was in so much shock I missed the opportunity to retort, something I deeply regret as he flew off up the road again, as I turned right.....another victory to him then :p

nice enough cars I suppose but I don't think they aren't pretty enough to be a classic, the interior is really rather plasticy and they are definitely more girly than manly.

given the rock bottom prices of the s2000 I think the 5 has had it's day

let the flaming commence!!!

Can you pick up a well-functioning S2000 for under a grand yet? ;)

It's not just that:

- The S2000 will never be as cheap to run as the MX-5
- Community and groups supporting the 5 are larger and more family like
- Huge parts market for the MX-5 miles bigger than the S2000

The S2000 will never replace the 5, Honda simply hasn’t built enough of them and due to the Honda scene tax they will never be as cheap as a 5.

Because its full of Lemmings on here that follow each other for fear of being slating

Did you think of that one yourself, did it take long?

They're just awesome. And the whole gay/hairdresser's car thing is a myth created by true driving enthusiasts to keep the prices low and keep plenty available ;). The only thing better is a Suzuki Cappuccino.

I've been a '5 owner since last Monday and it's a fantastic car. I'll admit it's not as fast or "manly" as an S2000, but it also doesn't have the running costs or initial purchase cost. You can get a decent Mk1 for under a grand now, which in my eyes is a bargain for some proper motoring.

I spent a bit more on a Mk2.5 because I wanted something I could use on the motorway etc and it's my only car, otherwise I'd have got a S/C Mk1.

Yes, I get the usual hairdresser/gayer/ladyboy comments from people, but it's usually from someone who's driving a FWD diesel repmobile with about as much character and driver satisfaction as a wet fart so it's rather ironic!

Most people shut up about the hair dresser comments when you show them how they actually perform when not driven by 40year old women.

I still love my Mk1, want to Supercharge it once I have sorted a new bike out.

I'm afraid my interest doesnt increase when I'm privvy to an mx-5 hooning around, yes I get they are fun but a caterham/westfield will be faster, more controlled and more manly doing the same thing.

its horses for courses and at a price point too I get that, but for me its a birds car

Fair enough and I would have a Caterham too but for the price it cant really be beaten.

*Searching Pistonheads for Caterham's..... :p

For my personally I have bikes for speed so just wanted something really cheap, RWD and fun!
