Is the MX5 the new Mondeo?

It seems that gets recommended now it practically every other thread...I don't remember it being that way, what happened? When did it lose the hairdresser's image? :p

Poor Mondeo, I hardly see that come up anymore.

Hi, when on earth did the mondeo become a hairdressers car, what bs. The mondeo is a far better, more modern, faster, better handling and more interesting to look at then any cheap copy of a british sports car that will go through alloy wheels like nothing on earth.
Poor MX, I feel sorry for the gay owners...

Not to provoke a reaction, more in the hope that people see it and stop doing it as its irritating. Also to widen the choice a little, not just on an MX5 but other marques. Like the CTR and Clio RS arent the only hot hatches that exist, the Mondeo isnt the only saloon, etc

I wonder how many modeos are saloons! Bet the hatch takes a huge percentage of sales.
Also, cant say i see CTRs being recommended at all lately.

Lastly, someone has a budget, asks for cars. Is it wrong that if the mondeo is the best choice that people recommend it? Others are recommended, but the best known choice is the one that people offer.

Really dont see why it is so surprising tbh

lots of us have driven many many cars, so opinions are formed by reading the reviews and experience.

Why would anyone want to buy an inferior product when you can get a better one for the same price?

Of course, thats how most clued up people would decide on what car they want to go and test drive, the not so clued up will buy based on looks and not much else.

As for product and price thats true for the MX5 but i'd be tempted to mention the MR2 (A little more expensive) but as mentioned with other marques theres generally a lot of choice to consider

The CTR and Mondeo were obviously an example, i've ignored your attempts to try and get a confrontation with me so far, quit being pedantic for the sake of causing an issue

I'm afraid my interest doesnt increase when I'm privvy to an mx-5 hooning around, yes I get they are fun but a caterham/westfield will be faster, more controlled and more manly doing the same thing.

its horses for courses and at a price point too I get that, but for me its a birds car

I'd love a caterham/westfield (and one day I'll have one), no argument they'd do all those things better. But I'm not gonna find a good one for a couple of grand, and (in relative terms!) an mx5 is very practical compared to something like that.

For the money, I think it's gotta be the most fun thing on 4 wheels until you get up to s1 Elise money.

For the record, I'd never attempt to burn someone off at the lights in it. Firstly, it'd get beaten by pretty much everything, and secondly it's all about throwing it down country lanes, trying to preserve as much speed as I possibly can. I didn't buy the car for other people to be impressed by it (on the rare occasion it has happened, I'm kinda embarrassed frankly).

I respect it's not for you, and you're fortunate enough to have a bit more money to throw around, and so they are going to make less sense. :)

CTR isn't an obvious choice imo, rarely see them suggested. Not trying to get anything going, you seem unwilling to acknowledge that the cars that are suggest the most are suggested for a reason other than everyone being sheep and following the clique to be part of the in crowd.

I dont agree, i'd suggest an Accord over a Mondeo and that has nothing to do with Jap fanboyism, honest.

I'm 19, male, with a fault accident, I don't have huge sums of money to spend on cars, so a very good condition MX5 with no rust or the like for £1350, and insurance for under £900.. I don't think I can do much better!

absolutely perfect attitude, I'll tip my hat to your post :)

A slightly toungue in cheek analogy might be ; driving an mx5 is like riding a scooter, its a laugh until your mates see you doing it

now that's a little bit OTT but it's how I see the marque, its just too rounded, curvy and wimpy for me to respect it, regardless of the level of tune it just will never look remotely engaging. I'd rather be slower in an s2000 than faster in a fettled five.

I completely understand and appreciate its a capable car, and for the money it represents a fantastic bang for your buck., just no for me though, I'm out :p

A friend of a friend had a 1990's MX5. That thing was a blast, I really think they make good cars for a weekends drive on some back country roads.

see I can see the appeal, but I'd buy a caterham if a budget weekend toy was an essential accessory, or a z3 maybe if I had to camp it up a bit as seems to be the growing trend.

Accords are more expensive than mondeos arent they, for an equivalent spec? And aren't the monedos known for having better handling?

How are getting into specifics when I presented examples of a situation only, because you are looking for confrontation!

The Accords i've owned and driven handled better than the Mondeo i've driven thats for sure, but of course it depends on what type of spec you want, you cant compare an Accord Type-S with a Mondeo base model diesel can you.

I can't ever remember this Raymond Lin character posting loads in motors before, yet it looks like he has been here since the dawn of time.

Things change, I suppose.

I enjoy the car every time I go anywhere in it, it really offers quite a lot especially considering what it costs to run. I've been without it for a little while as it's been in the garage getting some rust sorted and I really missed the little thing.

Who cares about image when it is such a great car to drive, surely if your bothered by the image then you're more vain than those that drive them?

Yeah true, but some MX5's are relatively cheap and not bad for hitting the urge of either owning one/or driving one.

a mini is a great drivers car, similarly I would never desire to own one

there is a point where I would question just how good a car has to be before I am prepared to forgoe my dignity just to enjoy it
