I have just installed a new 150gb Raptor and have the following problem-

When the PC is shut down and left for a while and restarted it take a long time (4 mins) to get past the windows XP loading bar. After that all is fine and a restart is fine!

Is there any reported or known problems for this cold boot issue?

I used to have a problem with really slow XP boot-up - but since I bought the Raptor 150 I've not had any problems at all.

I've not heard of any reports of cold boot problems and I try to keep an eye on any threads about stuff I've just bought.

But if I see anything - I'll post a link for ya ;)

i have just returned my raptor 150 that done that id say do the same
does it spin up at post and xp screen then "clunk" spins down then takes ages ?????

Well I just switched of the PC for ten minutes and came back and it worked fine!

I am starting to think this could be a heat issue where by when the drive is stone cold it is not spinning up properly!....Or am I talking out my backside?

I RMA'ed my Raptor 150 which did exactly that. Spin up, clunk...ermm...do something.... *whistle*...*angry*.... swtich off, turn on again...RMA. :)

The replacement works fine.

Well after much investigation these are the facts -

Clean installation of XP - works fine until start from cold and then it takes 5 minutes to get to the desktop!
Cloned image to other SATA drive and that works OK
If I unplug the drive and plug it back in (in other words drop power) takes 5 minutes to load windows.
If I then just restart (power not dropped) or hybernate/standby -no problem!

Sounds an issue to do with the grease in the bearings that allow it to spin so fast guys, i seen this in other stuff and was located to a batch

Sounds like a dodgy batch?

When cold, my 74Gb Raptor boots fine, but my Seagate (in a caddy) is not recognised if the temperature (of the drive) is ~ 16C or less.

I did some more testing and discovered that if the drive is on its side the problem is more itermitant and not quite so bad! -this must be some speed or low spin issue!

My 74 gb Raptor is very quick to boot all the time.

I have exactly the same issue. On switching my machine on for the first time with WD150 raptor, it takes like 5 minues to boot into windows. However upon a restart it takes like 22 seconds. I only got the drive from ocuk 2 weeks ago and look like I have the same issue as everyone here. The manufacture date of my drive is december 2005.

My 74Gb Raptor seems to be quite slow for me. I timed it last night and on a reset boot it took 75 seconds to boot back into Windows. That quite shocked me. Is there anything I can do to test the drive? I have another disk I could use to test the Raptor? By that I mean I could disconnect the Raptor and install Windows on the remaining disk. and see how quickly Windows boots up on the other disk.

How did you find that out? Is it printed on the actual disk itself?

Managed to fix my problems by disabling NCQ, see other thread on raptors and Nforce4 boards. Maybe someone should make one of these posts a stickie to reduce the number of returns.

Is that a bios setting?
