As the title says really, in your opinion, what is the best cover version of a song ever?

I'd have to plump for Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U. Just such a fantastic reworking of the song, far better than the original I think.

Also worth a mention for a laugh is Limp Bizkit's cover of Faith by George Michael. Single handedly the greatest and ******* song in existance.

I quite like anything done by "me first and the gimme gimmes", but thats just me :)

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World. Bowie said it was the definitive version and he should know

I guess it depends how you look at it.

Are we talking, best cover version as in biggest improvement on the original, or best cover version as in, out of all the cover versions ever made, which is the best song?

Personally I think Oasis' cover of 'Cum On Feel the Noize' by Slade is fantastic - perhaps not worthy of the overall title, but the best I can think of at the moment.

My Generation aint bad neither :)

My vote goes to The Arctic Monkeys - Love Machine (Girls Aloud)

**** funny :D

Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit
And I don't know who did it, but a punk band did a version of Tainted Love and it's ****ing awesome.

Pennywise doing Stand By Me is great too.

will young - light my fire.... :p

no seriously, erm, embrace covering how come by eminem is one of my favourites at the minute, as is dream theatres cover of dark side of the moon.

So good I don't even think of the original at all which is unusual because most covers cause me to wish immediate and painful death on the artist covering/murdering them

all along the watchtower by jimi hendrix...

got to be the best cover ever, he made it his own

Well when the artist covered changes the original to be like the cover you know it can't be all that bad a version.

Johnny Cash - Hurt is fairly obvious but I can't think of another where the artist has made the track quite so much his own.

Wonderwall - Ryan Adams, gives it a completely different feel, going from the imo childish vocals in the original and really capturing the melancholy that the song deserves

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley, need I say more?

And, though it kinda pains me to admit, Common People - William Shatner :D
